Ok action film.......2005-08-21
Well this is nothing stunning and nothing new to the gerne but this is an ok cool film to watch to pass a little time. A good mix of stunts, fights and explosions without a great plot, but there rarely is in most action films. A good car chase at the start sets the pace for the film as good as the Ronin or Bourne identity car chases. The fights are ok, a good bit of martial arts used but they feel over staged to me. Overall not great but far worse out there!

Jason Statham is superb and it's him alone that really distinguishes this film from th erest. The fighting scenes are realistic and enjoyable. The car chases are brilliant benefiting from Luc Besson's 'Taxi' experiences. You get the perfect dose of everything - not too many explosions, etc. Jason like Jet Li & Jackie Chan, but unlike most, does all his own stunts. The script is a bit weak but the talent on show makes up for it. Overall, a very enjoyable action film with plenty of fighting (but not than much shooting) that puts most of the recent Hollywood action films to shame. The critics have been comparing this XXX, but in my opinion, beacause of the way it was made (little special-effects, actors trained in fighting, well thought out, etc) this film is in a different class! So, buy it now!!
Good action film without challenging the brain!.......2005-01-10
This is basically a Bond type film, if you like them, you'll like this! Great action scenes, good explosions, good car chases, but a simple plot! It's a good action film, with good effects, just lacking something to make it that 5*!

My oh my, how bad is this? so bad it's laughable, or perhaps that's the point? kind of like watching someone else play a computer game "beat em up" for 90 minutes. Appalling.
Atmospheric action film with very good fight scenes.......2004-03-28
I was surprised to see how many ingeniously choreographed and very well executed fight scenes can be found in this film. Although overall directorship is not the best of the best (one might find one too many exaggerated explosions), this film has enough attitude and atmosphere to almost be cult; a definite must if you like your martial arts.
Good sense of humour, speed and surprise are constant elements and - as it says on the box - it is better than Triple X. Watch it!

With Dirty Pretty Things Stephen Frears (The Grifters) gives us a dark gritty film examining London's seedier underbelly. Oscar nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor is Okwe, a Nigerian doctor who fled to Britain after the death of his family. So far he has evaded capture by the authorities and successfully held down two jobs as a taxi driver and night porter in a downmarket hotel. But all this changes when he finds a human heart blocking a toilet in one of the rooms and discovers his manager is running an organ trafficking operation offering illegal immigrants passports for organs. The plot then follows a well-trodden thriller path as Okwe wrestles with his conscience and also the growing affections of Turkish asylum seeker Senay (Audrey Tautou).
Ejiofor and Tautou give incredibly affecting performances as the disenfranchised inhabitants of the capital city and the plot is harrowing without being sensationalist. The only disappointment is the black-and-white morality that holds the film together. In a drama that sets out to challenge our perceptions and prejudices, the inappropriately Hollywood ending is a letdown that does nothing to raise this film above being a stock thriller, albeit of the more intelligent kind. --Kristen Bowditch

Superb film about the underside of London.......2007-11-08
I lived in central London for eight years and saw a bit of the underside.
I found this film superb, and quite plausible. Art should show you the unexpected good and bad in people, and these characters are fascinating. Chiwetel Ejiofor is a brilliant lead, and Audrey Tatou provides fantastic support.
A tip to anyone watching this kind of film - always put the English subtitles on. I'm not hard of hearing but to pick up all the detail you need to see the dialogue.
The music is excellent, too. This is a British classic, and like The Long Good Friday, it gives you a raw look at London life.

Stephen Frears makes another gritty drama which deals with a contemporary issue-this time it is about illegal immigration in England. Taken from the viewpoint of the immigrants we must sympathise with them, and whatever your political viewpoint on the subject Frears again has given the average viewer more to think about. He shows above all the human side of these forgotten people, reminding us that they should not be treated like cattle (even when they are in the film), and that they are simply trying to find a home and survive. Some will view the characters as immoral, breaking the law of a country not their own in order to further themselves, but this is not the case.
Ejiofor plays Okwe, an African immigrant working two jobs in London just so he can raise enough money to get by. He is a doctor, but most of his time is spent as a Hotel Porter. He sleeps on the couch of another illegal immigrant, Senay from Turkey played by Audrey Tautou. She works in the same Hotel as Okwe, but the immigration guys are after her and she changes jobs quickly, going to work in a factory where the owner forces her to give him sexual favours. One night Okwe is unplugging a toilet in a hotel when he finds a human heart. It seems Sneaky, the Hotel's night manager is involved in several dodgy schemes, most involving black-market donors- he exploits immigrants, making them donate their various organs in order to get money for themselves so that they can leave or gain citizenship. Senay wants to join her family in America, but will never be able to afford tickets or passports and she agrees to sell a kidney to Sneaky. She is in love with Okwe, but guilty over giving up her virginity, and Okwe comes up with a plan to save Senay by saying he will do the operation in exchange for passports. These are are the dirty things of the title which are forced upon innocent people with no other way out.
Frears must be praised again for bringing an important and taboo issue to the big screen and deals with it in a clever and honest way. There are funny moments, amidst all the grim details so it never becomes unwatchable. Frears is showing that whatever you believe, the immigration laws in this country are deeply flawed and is drawing attention to the fact that people are being exploited. Okwe does an excellent job in the lead role and gives a memorable, understated performance, showing the strain and pressure of a man in such a situation. Tautou in her first English speaking role is also very good, and although her Turkish accent slips this can be forgiven. She portrays the yearning for a better life accurately and the desperation which comes with such a desire. She was undoubtedly offered many roles like Amelie after that film's success, but deserves respect for choosing to do something different, especially here in such a challenging role. Sergi Lopez is perfect as Sneaky, a slimy man who will do anything to anyone just to get a little more money, a precursor to his character in Pan's Labyrinth. Sophie Okonedo is also good as a local prostitute, providing some light relief. The love story does seem a little odd and almost tacked on, but the conviction of the actors mean they pull it off without it seeming unconvincing. A film probably which only fans of Tautou or Frears will come to which is unfortunate as it has much to offer. Nothing extra on the DVD though.

sublime film, Ejiofer is an unbelievable actor....its quality down to every little detail...even his facial expressions show his anguish and suffering, a great/different addition to British cinema.

It brings a real human angle to the whole immigration debate. Moving, funny, and a love story in one. The London that you may not see if you do not live it. Everyone should watch.
This Film Is Exelent!!!.......2007-06-21
i cannot understand why the person below a few only gave it 3 stars. it is an exellent film. althugh i have only seen it once it will probably remain as one of my fave films ever. the mix of drama and puzzle in this film are absolutly exellent and will keep you guessing right till the end what will happen. it is also quite funny in parts which give the film that added dimension.
