One for Carey fans, not the more casual viewer.......2008-02-12
Jim Carey is one of those actors who seems to be the same type of person in every role he plays: manic, overly expressive and a tendency to stretch his words in a high pitched voice. This film is no different, and given Jim Carey is an acquired taste, your enjoyment of the film will largely hinge on whether or not you like Carey. If not, then give this a miss.
The film tells the story of a struggling TV newsman, constantly over looked for promotion. After a mugging, he asks God why this is happening, at which point he meets God, masterfully played by Morgan Freeman. God tells Carey that for the next week, Carey will have God's powers to see if he can do a better job. At first, Carey revels in this, as he causes wind to blow up womens' skirts and even enlarges his wife's breasts. However, he struggles with other aspects, like when his mind is filled with the voices of praying children.
The film is rather far fetched escapist stuff, which is not necessarily a bad thing. This film is meant to be a comedy, but Carey is such a "love-or-hate" figure that your enjoyment of this film and ability to find it funny hinge on your view of the man.
Good heart-warmer with the comical genius.......2008-02-11
Bruce Almighty is a good example of a modern day feel good film. Afterall, when Jim Carrey's character, Bruce, is unexpectedly given the powers of God for a week, how could their not be a happy ending?
The plot isn't too shallow like most humour + romance films out there, and is kept alive by the superbly naturally acting of Carrey. His mime impressions cease to astound me - in one scene, he pulls the moon at night closer to his apartment's balcony, and perfectly manages to immitate the strain in his body of pulling it in, whilst holding onto no rope or props!
Undoubtedly for me, the 2 funniest scenes are the ones in which Bruce goes wild with his new powers and makes his wife, played the beautiful Jennifer Anniston, a sexual tiger! The other see's him toy around with his rival in the TV studio, he makes a meal out of the newsreel..
This may not be one of the most sophisticated films out their, or indeed Carreys 'outlandish' performance, but behind that ageing skin of his we see that he's still got what it takes. Just don't take this film too seriously, and you'll love it!
How would you handle the most awesome responsibility in the universe?.......2007-12-14
Broad, amusing, well-intended comic fantasy about an ambitious reporter who hates his job and dreams of becoming a news anchor. After suffering from some hard luck, he directs his anger toward God who he feels is ignoring him completely, until he has an unexpected encounter with God who endows him with divine powers that allow him to see the truth. Well-crafted comedy suffers from occasional lapses due to conventional story elements, but it's good-natured and often laugh out loud funny, with some terrific sight gags, clever ideas, and a perfect part for Carrey who makes a welcomed return to the kind of silliness that made him a star.
A relationship with the Creator, love, compassion, and selflessness.......2007-07-05
`Bruce Almighty' was Jim Carrey's triumphant return to comedy after scratching the dramatic itch. After delivering such great performances in `The Truman Show' and `Man in the Moon', a return to the rubber-faced, flopping around Jim Carrey feels somewhat dated. Yes, Carrey's antics were getting stale at that time. But, fortunately, `Bruce' is a movie that matures along with him. In this sense it is actually a welcome sight when the movie puts its silly physical comedy in the backseat for the more dramatic exploration of the story's possibilities in the 3rd act.
Carrey is showing his stuff here because this story and character is strong enough to have stood in the shoes of another. Shadyac did well to cast the great Morgan Freeman as Alpha and Omega. Freeman brings an elegant all knowing air and a humanistic touch together for an intriguing interpretation of God. Far better and more memorable than just a bright light or all-business interpretation. Jennifer Aniston, as usual, remains the weakest element in the movie as Bruce's live-in girlfriend and proverbial Holy Spirit in this symbolic trinity. `Daily Show' alumni Steve Carrell gets a chance to show off on the big screen although his big trailer moment isn't as funny as the director seems to think.
More than its individual moments, `Bruce' is admirable for the creativity and, to be honest, simple audacity of its story. The movie has a clear vision and the script is sharp, intelligent and witty - a rarity in slacker comedies. The movie isn't too enamored with its own cleverness, applying its touches in blotches all over the movie and sometimes in unexpected ways. A subject that, no matter how fanciful it is dealt with by movies, manages to send both traditionalists and atheists into a rage with demands that the movie's view fit into their own. Like `Dogma' and `The Devil's Advocate' it's refreshing to see that this kind of movie can still get made.
This movie might not quite top the previous high such as the adult fairy tale `Liar, Liar,' but "Bruce Almighty" is an interesting and entertaining comedy that brings religion as one of its major themes.
Hilarious!!!.......2006-08-13
This film is hilarious. The comedy in it is hard to see - you have to be a certain kind of person to appreciate it. Jim Carey plays an arrogant, self obsessed, and overall martyr. I found it hard to feel any sympathy for him throughout the film. But, all through, the film is such a laugh. So its completely random and the story is pointless with no message - but its extremely funny. If you are a teenager, at the stage where you go a but mad, then this is the film for you. Whether its a sleepover or just you, its worth the buy.
