There's something intrinsically funny about tactlessly truth-telling talking animals. And there are plenty of those--and laughs to go with them--in this 1998 re-imagining of Hugh Lofting's children's story. Eddie Murphy plays the doctor in question, a modern-day San Francisco physician who discovers that he can understand what animals have to say. Director Betty Thomas makes the most of an amazing voice cast for the animals, led by Norm McDonald and including everyone from Garry Shandling to Julie Kavner to Albert Brooks. The story itself is pretty slim--will the conscientious doctor sign his soul away to a greedy HMO?--but Murphy makes the most of it, often providing priceless reactions to animal voices only he can hear. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

Drunk Monkey as good as Murphy.......2007-04-26
I really liked this movie. I laughed in many parts and just thought this movie was a blast. The drunk monkey was enough to make me wet my pants and the special effects were great. Everything the animals said matched up with how their facial expressions were. Overall a great comedy,

Brilliant.......2006-12-21
Excellent family movie that works for both kids and adults. Dr. Johh Dolittle rediscovers his 'gift' of being able to listen to and talk to animals during a multi-million dollar take-over of his medical practice. Chaos ensues as he and his family sway from denial to acceptance...
Great for all the family. Rent it.
Nice heartwarming film with comedic value.......2003-10-15
It is, in my opinion the best comedy film Eddie Murphy has starred in, not just being a nice film all over it still manages to be very funny at the same time, what a good premise.
In the film Eddie Murphy is a doctor who finds out that he is able to talk to animals. Soon all the animals find out about him and trouble mounts up.
talking dogs bonehead.......2003-09-25
The film is funny for adults and children alike. It bridges the gap between childhood and adulthood in many ways. The whole family found it hilarious. It's the right length - some movies have your kids sat in front of the box for 2 and a half hours, this one is about an hour and a half. The talking dog is fantastic as is the guinea pig strapped to the roof of the car. A really worthwhile buy that our house couldn't manage without!!
