5 out of 5 stars Sci-fi for people who don't like sci-fi.......2004-12-29

After watching this film it is hard to believe that it was not based on a novel that had been transferred to the screen. The plot, structure and pacing is highly literary.

Another aspect of the film is the production design. It sets out to be futuristic, but without the whizz-bang of Star Wars or the bolted-on cyber visions of Blade Runner. Instead it opts for the 'clean' futurism by simply removing reference points to the past, much in the same way as was done in Rollerball and Sleeper in the 1970s.

The acting is superb with no hamming and the soundtrack is complimentary without being intrusive.

The twists at the end are unexpected and this is a film that rewards multiple viewing.

It manages to be a science fiction film that can be watched by people who don't like that kiond of film as it it more about the people than the gadgets.

This is a definite must in any film-lovers library.

5 out of 5 stars Better Testament.......2004-11-21

This film was and still is forward thinking. The themes dealt with in the film become more and more applicable as each day passes.

Genetic engineering concerning humans always makes it big in the press (cloning, for example) and for guidance I would direct people towards this film. Its extremely didactic in its content and I wholly believe that our world, if allowed to continue down the road that some over-enthusiastic scientific researchers are forcing us to travel down, will end up resembling something not a million miles away from the world depicted in this film.

Anyway, more about the film. The soundtrack is amazing, production design supurb. The production design in this film paved the way for near-future science fiction films like "Minority Report" and the recent "i-Robot" in the way that one can still not only recognise the surroundings but also empathise with characters feelings towards institutions and predicaments that could be a little abstract to our society, ie, you believe that in twenty or thirty years time, the things seen as sci-fi gimmicks in the films could actually become a part of everyday life.

Throughout the whole film I felt sorrow and remorse and there was also a sense of foreboding for my part. A sense that the human race had lost a part of its innocence by tampering too much with things that should sometimes be left well alone.

I know that this review is overtly polical (you can say that again) but so is this film, I don't know whether they were aiming for that or whether it was truly character driven but the political themes still remain.

Top film, buy it, watch it, love it.

This film is really good. And i think AI was really boring. Worth renting.

4 out of 5 stars Stewart, class of the field, DVD lacking for race action.......2007-06-25

I own many of these titles from the Brunswick archives and I am mostly pleased to have them, they are the only way to see the formula one scene as it was from 1970 to 1980. In many ways I feel that formula one was better in this period for out and out racing, wheel to wheel action and before money rules and sponsors took away many of the reasons why we watched formula one in the first place, action!. These DVD's however are frustrating beyond belief as no actual real racing action is captured on them as Brunswick only use there own footage taken often from one corner on the track and it shows, painfully badly. Nothing worse than watching the drivers put on their helmets for five minutes, sit on the start line waiting for the lights, only for the picture to pause and the announcer to say "And Stewart won the race" So where was the race, let me see it, please !!! While races are omitted there is also the totally dreadful der, der, der, der der, der der der der music as the results are being shown, trust me it drives you mad, it will have you screaming for the remote to turn it down. Why cant they use TV footage, lets have a BBC Grand Prix style DVD using their own footage. In summary, its great to see the old drivers (many no longer with us sadly) and reminisce, but these DVD's are poor for any real race action, but its great to see legends like Stewart, Peterson and Cevert and all the others. Awesome
