Amazon.co.uk Review

Jim Carrey is back in top form after his disastrous outing in The Cable Guy. As a lawyer who becomes physically unable to tell a lie for 24 hours after his son makes a magical birthday wish, Carrey learns a few brutal truths about the real meaning of life. There is very little plot, but Carrey's rubbery contortions and slapstick trickery provide just enough humour to keep you interested in this breezy bit of escapism. Not aided in Liar Liar by pets or animation, Carrey manages to do amazing and unique things with very simple props. He is also more in control of his acting than before. He is still over the top, but remains believable in some of the lower-energy scenes. An added plus is that the comedy is not as coarse as we've come to expect from him. --Rochelle O'Gorman

4 out of 5 stars At last, a role that suits Carrey to the glove.......2007-12-14

Liar Liar is a very good comedy about a lawyer who can't lie for an entire day because of a wish his son made when blowing out the candles on his birthday cake. He always promises the boy that he will pay him a visit, but when that moment has come he always has something better to do. Because the boy is so disappointed by his dad, he wishes that the man will be honest for an entire day and surprise, surprise: his wish comes true.

What you get is typical Jim Carrey, but it works perfectly if you ask me. It could have been a corny movie that you would love to hate (in other words a typical Disney movie), but he made something original out of it. In some movies he really exaggerates and then I'm not a fan of his work, but this time his style and overacting didn't bother me once. I had a great time watching this movie and was laughing all the time. I just loved the idea of the career driven lawyer who always lies but now has to be honest for an entire day and therefor almost loses his job and career that is so dear to him. I'm sure that many lawyers in real life would have a lot of difficulties as well if they had to be honest for one day.

fantastic film if you have a great sense of humour. jim carey is just hillarious throughout the film doing some very stupid outrageous acting. my opinoin... *****5star. it will only be as funny if you have a great sense of humour. if not then it might not be your type of film.

One of Jim Carrey's best! One fantastic and clever storyline and with the superb performance by Jim Carrey this movie is a must buy and will have you laughing for ages!

5 out of 5 stars Funniest Carrey Movie?.......2006-06-14

To me, having seen the entire Jim Carrey back catalogue, this movie stands out as being his best for several reasons.
First the satirical theme of a lying lawyer, who has to tell the truth for just 24 hours, is comic genius.
But to interweave this theme with a sentimental family storyline adds depth to the movie and therefore, it makes a great family movie.

5 out of 5 stars Carrey's Best Performance.......2006-03-15

I loved this movie and i find it is one of Carrey's funniest performances to date.
Carrey plays a lawyer who tells some outstanding lies that gives him a win every time and makes him one of the top lawyers, but he takes the lying out of work too and lies to everybody. His mother, his ex-wife, his co-workers and even his son Max. Eventually Max has had enough of his fathers lies and on his birthday when blowing out the candles on his cake he makes a wish that his father can't lie and it comes true with some incredbily funny outcomes.
Fletcher (Carrey) on his first day of no lies in the first few minutes of him being awake finds it hard to cope with. On his way to work he tells some horrible truths but at the same time they are incredibly funny.
Through the movie Fletcher comes to realize that although it is hard to cope with that the truth is always the best option but is it too late to win back his son?
A very emotional movie which is a very heartwarming family film that everybody will enjoy.

Amazon.co.uk Review

The vexed question of comedian Andy Kaufman's reality is always at issue in Milos Forman's under-appreciated Man on the Moon. "There is no real you," jokes Lynn Margulies (Courtney Love) to boyfriend Kaufman (Jim Carrey), as he grows more contemplative during his final battle with cancer. "Oh yeah, I forgot," he says. The story of Kaufman's quick rise to fame through early appearances on Saturday Night Live and the conceptual stunts that made his club and concert appearances an instant legend in the irony-fuelled 1970s and early 1980s, Man on the Moon never makes the mistake of artificially demarkating comic Andy and private Andy. True, we get to see something of his private interest in meditation and some of the flakier extremes of alternative medicine, but even these interludes suggest the presence of an ultimate con behind apparent miracles of transformation.

Screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (The People vs. Larry Flynt) allege that transformation was Kaufman's purpose--more than a shtick but less than a predestiny. As we see him constantly up the ante on the credibility of his performance personae (the obnoxious nightclub comic Tony Clifton; the insulting, misogynistic professional wrestler), Forman makes it harder and harder to detect Kaufman's sleight of hand. But it's there, always there, always the transcendent Andy watching the havoc he creates and the emotions he stirs. Carrey is magnificent as Kaufman, re-creating uncannily detailed comedy pieces etched in the memory of anyone who remembers the real Andy. But while Carrey's mimicry of Kaufman is flawless and funny, the actor probes much deeper into an enigmatic character who, in life, was often a moving target even for those closest to him. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars Carrey at his best.......2004-10-06

When I tell people about this film and mention that Jim Carrey is the staring role they assume that it is a stupid film with Carrey's ever repetetive one liners and catchphrases, I assure you this is one film that won't annoy the hell out of you.

The film is based on Andy Kaufman's life and how he was pictured by the media. This is a tragic dramatical comedy which will make you laugh at the antics of Andy Kaufman but also make you think when the serious stuff kicks in. The film follows Andy through his early times in clubs right through his appearences on saturday night live, the inter-gender wrestling, his time on Taxi, the ludicras hoax's and the tragedy of his life, this is one of my favorite films and if you watch I'm sure it will be one of yours aswel.

5 out of 5 stars Under Rated.......2004-07-24

Any film with Jim Carrey as the star is going to put people off. Fact. Most people are sick of his goofy roles where the same jokes always apply.

In Man On The Moon, Carrey provides an acting role which suits his comedy calibre, yet shows a high level of acting which has not been shown in his earlier work.

The film is disturbing, yet comical. Perhaps how Andy Kaufman's life was perceived by the media. Jim Carrey delivers both of these extremes with high regard and has not been credited at all for a sublime acting performance. Carrey provides a moving performance which shows he is not all 'dumb 'n' dumber'.

With a moving tale of a great comedian comes an excellent movie. Sadly it is true life for Andy Kaufman, but without giving the plot away, Jim Carrey provides a credit worthy performance playing one of America's comedy greats.

Tradgic comedy? Oxymoron? You decide.

4 out of 5 stars Thankyou very much.......2004-03-29

This film is beautiful and moving and surprisingly funny. It follows the career of Andy Kaufman from fairly appalling stand up to his time on the sitcom 'Taxi' and Saturday Night Live. Jim Carrey is wonderful in the role and is suitably funny and entertaining as well as demonstrating Kaufman's growing frustration at being typecast. This film also boasts a superb supporting cast. I knew nothing of Andy Kaufman before I saw this film so only could trust that Carrey's performance was true to life. It was only until I saw a re-run of 'Taxi' I realised how accurate his portrayal was. I would recommend this film for laughs but also to appreciate the beauty of life. The wrestling is reason enough to watch!

5 out of 5 stars Insane....or a comedic genius?.......2004-01-04

If you know Andy Kaufman purely as the silly foreign man character Latka Gravis in the hit U.S. sitcom "Taxi" then you have only scratched the surface of his comedic repertoire. Kaufman (played with obvious affection by Jim Carrey) takes us (almost?) to the brink of insanity in this tragi-comedy that mirrors Kaufman's life and mind. Carrey (as Kaufman) leaves us, and everyone that crosses his path, wondering just how much of what we believe about him is true and how much is what he wanted us to believe. Kaufman - genius or madman? Buy "Man On The Moon", decide for yourself and enjoy the ride. Fantastic entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Milos Forman creates a Kaufmanesque Film.......2003-08-31

Most commentary on this film has focused on Carey's portrayal of Kaufman. Such total immerson is always fascinating as is the public reaction. If you do it in a dramatic film (As in "Raging Bull" or "Shine") you can win an Oscar. But you do not need the Academy to tell you this is not a dramatic film. However, I really believe the best way of considering this film is to focus on the director more than the star.

The best parts of this film are at the beginning and the end. The opening sequence is simple Kaufmanesque, which, in retrospect, is a brilliant ploy. It sets the mood perfectly. At the end, with Kaufman's trip to the Philippines, is the final punchline to his life. Of course I do not want to give it away, but if you consider it from the perspective of Kaufman as the comedian who always cried "wolf," you have to appreciate the supreme irony of the moment which sums up Kaufman's life, both symbolically and literally (Note. Even though the cast credits are not at the end of the film, please make a point of staying around until the end of the credits. It is not a big joke, it is simply a pleasant surprise).

I watched this film with my kids who know nothing about Andy Kaufman. They knew who Carol Kane was from "The Princess Bride" and whathizface from all those "Back to the Future Movies." What was interesting to me was that they bit on the entire movie. No matter how many times Andy cried wolf, they fell for it. At the end they were convinced he was not really dead. Regarding the deleted scenes, I remember seeing Zmuda tear apart Kaufman's act on cable. I wish it had been kept in the film, because its one of his better triple twists.

This is not a great film, but it is a very good film, especially given its subject matter. If you do not like Kaufman, or are not willing to at least give him a shot, you probably will not like the movie. Nobody thinks Kaufman walked a fine line. He was over it. If that bothers you, then you will not like this movie. You have to take him at face value (and, yes, I appreciate the irony of that comment).

        5 out of 5 stars Liar Liar.......2006-08-21
