Amazon.co.uk Review

The title pretty much says it all, folks: A gorgeous ET cosies up to an eccentric scientist (a disarmingly straight Dan Ackroyd) in an attempt to save her dying planet and falls in love in the process. Much wackiness ensues. Art it ain't, but this likably lightweight film does deliver the laughs, with assured leading performances (for once, Kim Basinger's formica loveliness is utilised as an effective comedic asset), a surprisingly bawdy sense of humour and a riotous supporting turn by a then dewy-fresh Jon Lovitz. --Andrew Wright

This was a film that I found mildly diverting when i saw it as a kid, but like so many of these 80s comedy star vehicles, they are more likely to make me grimace than laugh. For "Good family entertainment" read "ok if you want to let your children watch something harmless while you do something more interesting".

5 out of 5 stars They're here!.......2004-03-29

I've been a fan of Dan Aykroyd for a good many years, and even though 'Stepmother' isn't one of his best films, it's been a film I've liked for years also, and it's nice to finally be able to buy it on DVD since my VHS has been watched to death. There are stellar performances by Aykroyd, Basinger and Hannigan (who later went on to fame as Willow in Buffy the Vampire Slayer). The basic concept of the story is that Basinger comes to earth after Aykroyd accidently beams a signal to her world, with disastrous results, and she needs to get Aykroyd to repeat what he did to solve their problem. All kinds of hilarious calamities follow, with Basinger ultimately falling heads over heels for Aykroyd. A very funny film for the whole family to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars I've got to get home to that good pie........2002-11-29

This is a much underrated movie. It is amusing and informative on many levels.

The basic story is an astronomer Dan Aykroyd as Steve Mills, by a fluke sends a message out of the galaxy. This causes a gravitational instability on that quadrant. An alien embassary Kim Basinger as Celeste Martin is sent to find and correct the problem. She is accompanied by Bag (Ann Prenttiss) who is ready to destroy anyone that gets in the way.

There are lots of misunderstandings and sight gages. However the Alien learns of love and people (including Jimmy Durante). This movie is just too jam-packed with fun to describe. You will have to see it again and again to pick up the parts that went by too fast.

5 out of 5 stars Basinger Brilliance.......2001-09-15

Kim Basinger plays alien Vicky Rogers in this romantic comedy. Alien Kim sets out to seduce Dan Ackroyd to uncover the secret of how he sent an energy ray from earth. Vickys attempts to understand American culture has hilarious effects.

5 out of 5 stars A must buy DVD!!!!!!.......2001-09-04

This DVD is a must for all Kim Basinger fan, her performance is Stepmother is only surpassed when she played Vicky....... in Batman. For non Basinger fans (Why?!?) there is sitll enough in the film to justify it's purchase, aliens, talking handbags, a clever storyline you will keep coming back for more. p.s For all Basinger fans I also recommend Blind Date. (Just don't let your friends borrow it)
