Amazon.co.uk Review
Take the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, add a dash of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and a lot more rum. Shake well and you'll have something resembling Dead Man's Chest, a bombastic sequel that's enjoyable as long as you don't think too hard about it. The film opens with the interrupted wedding of Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), both of whom are arrested for aiding in the escape of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) in the first film. Their freedom can only be obtained by getting Captain Jack's compass, which is linked to a key that's linked to a chest belonging to Davy Jones, an undead pirate with a tentacle face and in possession of a lot of people's souls. If you're already confused, don't worry--plot is definitely not the strong suit of the franchise, as the film excels during its stunt pieces, which are impressively extravagant (in particular a three-way swordfight atop a mill wheel). It may help to know that Dead Man's Chest was filmed simultaneously with some of Pirates 3, so don't expect a complete resolution (think more The Empire Strikes Back) or the movie will feel a lot longer than it really is.
Bloom shows a tad bit more brawn this time around, but he's still every bit as pretty as the tomboyish Knightley. (Seriously, sometimes you think they could swap roles.) Bill Nighy (Love, Actually) weighs in as Davy Jones and Stellan Skarsgård appears as Will's undead father. But the film still belongs wholly to Depp, who in a reprise of his Oscar-nominated role gets all the belly laughs with a single widened eyeliner-ed gaze. He still runs like a cartoon hen and slurs like Keith Richards--and he's still one of the most fascinating movie characters in recent history. --Ellen A. Kim

Part 1 = funnier, part 2 = more action!!!.......2007-06-05
Part 1 and 2 are really the same standerds,
this isn't very funny but has alot more action,
I'll make it short
10/10 movie!
Great effects and ace lines.......2007-02-23
The effects in this film are fantastic and some of the best that i have ever seen in a film. Quite a few of the lines are very witty and there are plenty of moments that make you jump! It is a great sequel from the 'Black Pearl' which was a great film and personally i think that this one is better. The acting in this film is extrodinary, as it should be in such a big film with so many well known actors.
'Dead mans chest' is surely one of the best films in the last year or so, i am just looking forward to the next film.
Better than the first.......2007-01-22
I was not a big fan of the first one the "black pearl". I actually thought the "black pearl" was boring and Orlando Blooms acting is so wooden. I thought i would give this one a try and i really enjoyed it alot better than the first one. Some funny lines and great movie for everyone. Worth a watch
Not up to the standard of the original, but what could be?.......2007-01-01
After the swashbuckling, non-stop adventure that was The Curse of the Black Pearl, I couldn't help feeling just a little let down by its sequel. Not that it was a bad film; it was a very GOOD film, compared with many. But compared with the original, it seemed a little padded and a little forced.
Why do all fantasy stories have to be a trilogy? That's the question that haunts me over and over. Pirates of the Caribbean fits into the formula of having a first movie that is complete in its own right, while part two ends on a cliffhanger. We see it in Back to the Future and Star Wars, just to mention the first two that come to my mind. But sometimes it doesn't need to be stretched. It is impossible to judge this story accurately without knowing how it is to end, but the cannibal island scene, which takes up a large amount of screen time, though funny seems no more than padding. The repetition of gags ensures that the humour lacks the spontenaity of the original. "Why is the rum gone?" worked, thanks to its sheer absurdity, as a one off. "Why is the rum always gone?" stretches this.
The romantic tension between Elizabeth and Jack also seemed to be a case of pandering to the fangirls desire for at a price of the story's integrity. Elizabeth is starting to earn herself a reputation that if not quelled will cause the audience to lose sympathy with her (apart, of course, from the aforementioned fangirls.)
Having said that, Where Dead Man's Chest overcomes its flaws, it excels. Despite its padding, I did not get bored and went back to the cinema several time. The final half-hour had me sitting on the edge of my seat, and I was frequently in giggles. The three-way sword fight is an amazing piece of filming. Jack Sparrow's last battle with the Kraken and its aftermath left me in a state of shock. Let's see him get out of this sticky situation in part three!
"You know you can't read.".......2006-12-31
"It's the Bible, you get credit for trying."
Captain Jack Sparrow is back. He has a secret (or two) and a limited time to keep from becoming a permanent fixture of the deep. All are seeking a key however the key means different things to different people. Will jack succeed? We shall see (or not.)
Over the top, every pirate pun available and non-stop. This movie can be fun if you have plenty of patients. It can be complex with overlaying purpose of many of the characters. There are plenty of one liners and sight gags.
My only suggestion is to wait until the next "installment" or movie in the "series" is produced before viewing this one. Hold your breath.
