Amazon.co.uk Review

Director Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump, Contact) had a hit with this 1984 comedy that first teamed Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito. Turner steals the show from the guys, however, playing a pushy romance novelist who gets stuck among some dangerous figures in Colombia and has only a rumpled guide (Michael Douglas) as an ally. The chemistry between the stars in Romancing the Stone is infectious (the trio went on to make a sequel, The Jewel of the Nile and then an interesting, dark comedy directed by DeVito, The War of the Roses). Zemeckis--whose speciality at the time was creating set pieces of raucous action (as in his Back to the Future)--keeps things hopping with lots of kinetic material. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars WOOOOO!!! Kathleen turner and creepy Michael Douglas!!!!.......2006-09-30

I absolutely ADORE this film. Its an absolute classic 80's adventure/romance with an absolutely perfect cast (Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas & Danny DeVito)
The basic plot is; romance novelist Joan Wilder(Turner)finds her sister is in trouble & is told to bring a map to get her back. Anyway, on the way she manages to get on the wrong bus in the middle of the jungle and when it crashes she pays a passing, useful man; Jack (Douglas) to help her get back. To cut a long story short they get into all sorts of adventures, end up following the treasure map (of course)themselves and (obviously) fall in love too.
If you like predictable yet entertaining 80's ish films then this is absolutely perfectfor you! 5 Stars

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun and adventure.......2004-03-09

Without even looking at other reviews, I'm sure I'm the first to draw this parallel.

*uses pliers to remove tongue from cheek*

Romancing the Stone jumped in to ride the wave of adventure movie semi-fanaticism spawned by the Indiana Jones movies, but gave us a more comedic villain in Danny DeVito; a less indomitable and less scrupulous hero in Michael Douglas; more pratfalls, and a stronger, less nice, more sultry heroine in Kathleen Turner.

There are several things that make this a five-star adventure movie. The action and the pace are great; there is a moderately complex plot; the special effects, while less than what you see in an Indy movie, are well-done; the music is rousing, and the scenery/setting is gorgeous. But, what I see as setting this film apart is the same factor I've noticed in most of my favorite films: the actors appear to be having the times of their lives playing their parts to the utmost. They seem to be enjoying being their absolute most in their parts, and their enthusiatic spills off the screen and flows through the room.

If you are a fan of adventure movies, you should see this one.

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable spin-off from the Indiana Jones pictures........2000-11-19

Romancing the Stone is an enjoyable spin-off from the Indiana Jones pictures, with Turner, Douglas and DeVito all giving deft performances in a film with just about the right mix of action, comedy and love interest. Some reviewers have lambasted it, others have gone over the top with praise. The former do so because they have regarded it with a critical highbrow eye, and the film clearly has no aspirations to be seen on a high intellectual plane; the latter because they mistake entertainment for quality. On its own level, there is no doubt that the film is highly entertaining, but it is all done within a simplistic and formulaic plotting which never gives way to real suspense or surprise. There isn't even anything original or awe-inspiring in the action sequences, and the villains are too comic-book to be seriously evil. Where the picture does impress is in the wonderful interplaying between Douglas and Turner at a level which brings the best out of the unextraordinariness of the story, to the extent that you almost look forward to the scenes between them which link the action sequences, rather than vice versa. As a whole, it doesn't have the flair, panache and thrilling cutting edge of Raiders of the Lost Ark, but then again, it didn't have Steven Spielberg to provide them, although the direction of Robert Zemeckis does show touches of the style he was later to bring to the Back to the Future trilogy and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

5 out of 5 stars Great fun, a real adventure to watch.......2000-09-08

This video classic brings in the three most popular genres: action, comedy and romance. The on-screen chemistry between Douglas and Turner is the source of its success, their repartee is electric. I thought the music in it was perfect. It is an extremely underrated film, you forget how good it really is. Definitely one to keep in the video cabinet!

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant adventure movie.......2000-05-25

I wish they made more adventure movies like this one. It's such fun to watch, even on repeated viewings. All the actors are great in their roles, particularly De Vito. It's got romance, it's got adventure, it's got laughs, a great movie all round!
