Amazon.co.uk Review

Both a kind of home movie and a salute to the hip, pop-up sketch comedy of 1960s/early 1970s television--Laugh-In, Monty Python's Flying Circus, that sort of thing--Schizopolis is a hit-and-miss series of gags with vaguely connecting threads of Kafkaesque paranoia. Soderbergh himself stars as two people--one an ineffective dentist and the other a speechwriter for a cult movement called Eventualism, which has set out to "question all answers"--connected by their romances with the same woman, played by Soderbergh's real-life ex, Betsy Bramley. There isn't so much a story as a series of bits in which these characters often (though not necessarily) turn up, from press conferences on the subject of horse urination to old footage of nudists to a scene of an Eventualist exchange between husband and wife: "Generic greeting!" "Generic greeting returned!" None of this leads to a literal point but after a while an undercurrent of disease about making sense of the modern world becomes apparent beneath the jokes. Soderbergh (sex, lies, and videotape, Out of Sight) is certainly a filmmaker who goes his own way in life, always hitting his target in one spot or another and occasionally getting a bull's-eye for his trouble. Schizopolis is no bull's-eye and it has just as many detractors as admirers but it's impossible not to appreciate Soderbergh's conviction that making a film out on the fringes is a worthy endeavour. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars Great film!.......2003-09-18

This was hilarious! Much better than "Full frontal", which I personally did not appreciate so much. But that's my fault. If you liked "Sex, Lies and Videotapes" you could, probably, enjoy this.
But, beware, this is maybe not for everybody. Thank god.

1 out of 5 stars Silly, silly, silly.......2003-05-05

This is not an easy film to describe. The plot is fairly irrelevant to the film as a whole, its main substance is surreal bizarreness and silly jokes. Most of the latter are weak and not particularly funny, with a few exceptions. When watching the film, the question "why am I sitting here?" begs itself repeatedly.
Those who like surreal films might enjoy this one, but I would not recommend it to anyone except those with the most broadminded and patient sense of humour.
The sound and picture reproduction is poor, but whether this is a fault of the DVD or the original (I suspect the latter) is an open question.

4 out of 5 stars Marvellous, warped, twisted & bizarre.......2000-03-31

Nosearmy! Imagine a world as mundane as our own, but a world where people talk rubbish (because people do), pleasantaries are bland and automatically meaningless (because they are), the concept of chronology is lacking and nude men wearing credits are commonplace (but only if being restrained at a cost of $367).

Welcome to Schizopolis, Steven Soderbergh's one man band of a movie that owes as much to Blue Velvet as it does to Monty Python. Don't ask me what it's all about, as I haven't got a clue. I guess on a serious level it deals with isolation, the suppresion of how we'd like to behave (the letter Dr. Korchak writes to "attractive woman no. 2" is especially touching...), the fact that people talk but don't really communicate and that wastebaskets should play more easy listening music.

If you like your movies linear and to smack you in the face with plot development, then you'll find this pretty hard going, but Soderbergh's wonderful turn in front of the camera more than makes up for this, as he moves through the film with an air of child-like abandon and similar confusion. And anyway, if you don't get it, it's your fault and not his. You'll just have to watch it again and again until you understand.

Schizopolis -enjoy, puzzle and enjoy again.

5 out of 5 stars A sublime slice of boxing history.......2005-06-13

I'm delighted that this superb compilation of boxing's most exciting era has made it to dvd. The 1980s bore witness to arguably the most talent-rich, competitive middleweight division in living memory. You had the seemingly unstoppable bulldog Marvin Hagler, the olympic gold medal stylist & pin-up boy Sugar Ray Leonard, the lanky but explosive Thomas 'The Hitman' Hearns and the durable streetfighter Roberto 'Hands of stone' Duran.
This dvd features lengthy highlights from the most important & exciting fights between these four legends including Hearns-Leonard 1 & 2, Leonard-Hagler, Hagler-Duran & Hearns-Duran, not to mention all three rounds from Hagler-Hearns. This last fight was an out and out war that people still talk about to this day, it really must be seen to be believed.

If you love boxing then you simply must add this dvd to your collection. You won't regret it.

4 out of 5 stars a good buy.......2004-11-03

if you want to see the best mid weight boxers at their best watch this it is a pity nigel benn and eubank and co were not about as i dont think they would have lasted 3 rounds with these guys, you just dont see fighters like this any more.

2 out of 5 stars Great fights, terrible coverage.......2004-07-20

I found this DVD extremely disappointing. The fights themselves are classics, but I'm afraid the style of the commentary is very pompous and the editing of the fights is truly dreadful.

Oh yes, and just to add insult to injury, there's no footage whatsoever of the infamous "No mas" fight between Duran and Leonard... despite being one of the great talking points of boxing, this doesn't get covered because... errmm.. perhaps someone's management team decided it was too embarassing to show ? - either way, it's hardly a complete collection without it

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous 4... 80s boxing heaven.......2002-08-10

This excellent collection of boxing follows the historic duels between 4 of the best of all time, Hagler, Hearns, Leonard & Duran. This was a golden age of middleweight boxing and the DVD does it credit, showcasing all of the best action from the fights. If you love boxing you'll love this, even if you're too young to remember these fights. The highlight is round 1 of Hagler v Hearns, one of the best opening rounds in boxing history and if you like knockouts you'll be hard pressed to find a better finish than Hearns v Duran.

These warriors were made for each other, Hearn's raw power, Hagler's granite chin and strength, Leonard's sublime skill and Duran's sheer toughness. To watch these men do battle with each other is intruiging. You won't be dissapointed!

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Lots of action.......2007-01-02

I really enjoyed watching this DVD as the action was extreme off-road stuff. Plenty of Mud, water and challenge for the amazing Land Rovers taking part to show what they can do. It's a shame that the Camel Trophy (and the newer G4 Challenge) became less off-road driving focussed.

4 out of 5 stars Great start, weak finish........2005-01-29

I really enjoyed this DVD! it runs for 100 minutes covering the trophies from 1989 to 98, when Landrover pulled out. I drive my own Defender 110 offroad regularly and I was amazed and thrilled by the footage in the DVD. My only criticism is that as the show progresses the driving action gradually gives way to a more "glossy" production of the event overall, losing focus on the landrovers (which is all I was interested in!) Still, I would recommend it to anyone interested in extreme events, Landrovers and offroad driving.
