poor.......2008-01-16
If you are a film student this is worth watching.
If your not dont bother with this one. Nicely shot but the script is nonsense and doesn't gel.
Searching, but found no soul!.......2007-11-07
I wanted to like this film, I really did. Especially since it was filmed in my home town and one of my friends is the girl cowering in the car park scene. The novelty, however, wore off pretty early. I am very aware that director Neil Oseman produced this film on very little budget but writing a good script or finding a good local scriptwriter is surely the biggest investment one should make. Even I know that, and I'm no film maker. A prime example is when the lead male is trying to find the words to tell the cafe waitress how much she means to him so he whimpers the line: "You're so funny and intelligent and you light up the room" when the audience has barely heard her speak in the twenty minutes of screentime, let alone crack a joke, say anything remotely learned or even smile with any inner warmth. Curious! The less said about the plastecine Banshee the better.
By the time the "legion" of baddies arrive (thats 3 baddies really, cleverly filmed from different angles. Kill Bill showdown it aint) I was willing for the end. The climax being a train crash into hell that looks more like Wallace and Gromit go to the Moon.
All in all dire, souless acting, dreadful, dreadful script and a story lifted straight from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Neil, I take my hat off to you and you should be very proud of the work you put in on such little resources. For a movie viewer wishing to be entertained, however, it was like Knightmare meets Rolfs Cartoon Club. In a bad way!
Interesting .......2007-02-23
Joe (Bullock) works as a street sweeper driver. One night he witnesses a fight and gets involved. A little after that Death offers him a job. He'll be Death's apprentice and part of his job is to stop Hell coming to Earth. One tiny problem: he has to sever all ties to the living world and Joe is pining the the barmaid at his local, Heather (Cooke).
I didn't watch the documentaries but it is clear that the writers were strongly influenced by Terry Pratchett (especially the book Mort).
How does it stack up? Well, the special effects are reasonable but not brilliant. The acting is good and the dialogue realistic. In the end I had to remove stars because it is very predictable -- both in the plot twists and in the Mort references (though I didn't mind the latter). The other thing that annoyed was that one of the resolutions didn't seem consistent with the rest of the film.
On the whole it's an OK film, which tries to mix extraordinary events with everyday life. It's nice to see a film set in Britain. It could have been better but it could have been worse.
Revolutionary UK horror/fantasy.......2007-01-23
It's tempting to start this review with `if you can get past the dubious acting and cheap special effects' but actually, about an hour into the film, I found myself so involved in the story that the production values ceased to be a problem. The script and the characters are what really hold the film together and the inexperienced actors do manage to bring it to life enough for the viewer to be taken along with it. The most amazing thing about this film, though, is the ambition and ultimate achievement of the filmmakers. Soul Searcher is by no means perfect, but what is impressive is that the filmmakers have not allowed the small budget and the fact that horror/fantasy is pretty non-existent in the UK define the kind of film they wanted to make. This is not for everyone, and is perhaps purely a film for filmmakers as an understanding of how much time and effort goes into making any kind of film with no money helps to appreciate what a monumental achievement Soul Searcher is (and the DVD has more than enough extra's to make this an essential part of any aspiring filmmaker's collection). At the same time, there is a well-told, engaging story here that often takes the film beyond its low budget roots into what will surely be remembered as a cult classic.
Neil Oseman vs. S.M Moon "Party Anal".......2006-11-30
If this film had been made by a famous director with decades of experience and a hollywood budget then you'd, perhaps, have grounds upon which to rubbish it.
As Neil Oseman is still cutting his teeth in the Director's Chair I think he should be given a nod of respect.
Watch the extra features on this DVD and you might understand that Soul Searcher isn't about one night's entertainment, it's about inspiration.
I think Soul Searcher is a film for wannabe film-makers...not boneheads.
Incidently, does S.M stand for Small-Minded...?
