3 good, 1 not so good.......2005-12-21
First off - Xmen 1 and 2. Both top action films. The first one is a real character ensemble. The action is not so heavy, and its more drama, character led. Hugh Jackman embodis the character of Wolverine so well it is hard to imagine anybody else in the role.
Xmen 2 is more action packed, but lacks the subtlety of the first movie. Still, it is a real blast, the characters get slightly swamped with the new introductions of night crawler and Stryker, but for thrills per minute, you can't do much wrong here. The raid on the X mansion is brilliant.
Daredevil is an incredibly under rated movie. It is one of the only movie that Ben affleck actually fits the role. It's darker and grittier than the xmen films and more violent. Jennifer Garner is brilliant here as Elektra, and Colin farrell is one of the best villains ever as the mad Bullseye. The plot is a bit weak, but the action scenes are stupendous, particularly a pub fight scene, and the church fight.
Now we come to the real let down of the pack. I was hoping it was good - Elektra was a good character in Daredevil, and Jennifer Garner is fine. But everything else is poor in this film. A wordy script fails to deliver any thrills, and when the action scenes come along they are incredibly messy, and hard to work out what is going on. The plot is confusing and bloated, the special effects obvious and the villains are just cliches. Butthe one good point is definately Jennifer Garner, and a decent opening that the rest of the film fails to live up to.
It's a shame that this boxset doesn't really come with any extras. Sure you get a few bits on xmen 2, daredevil and elektra, but its nothing worth writing home about. But if you don't own any superhero films, and would like to, then this is a good place to start that collection!
X-men, Daredevil, Elektra - it's all good!.......2005-06-18
Daredevil
First off the bat I'd have to say that I personally enjoyed Daredevil at the cinema! There, I've said it!
Saying that, The directors cut is so much more!! It's not your standard extra 5 or 10 minutes added here, they've added a whole new sub-plot (or in reality, they've put it back) and now some of the plot holes and apparent random dialogue in the original make sense because of this plot. When this whole sub-plot was removed originally, they had to re-film little scenes so that it made a little more sense - and these have been dropped as they're not needed or conflict with the sub-plot. 1 such scene was the Daredevil/Elektra love scene - this never made sense to me as Daredevil wouldn't have left someone in trouble for that (as tempting as it would be). The Director's cut is something to add the the collection even if you already own the original theatrical release!
Elektra
Where do we start! :(
Plot holes? Bad ideas? Bad dialogue? there's so many. :'(
I'll refrain from that!
All those who love Jennifer G in Alias and Daredevil will love Elektra!
All those who love the Elektra comic will probably be hiring high class assassins to hit the makers of Elektra.
Those who are after a good film in general will be a little disappointed I'm afraid.
We have the inclusion of 'The Hand', Marvel's resident Ninja clan - something I was looking forward to but the clan ended up being weak as a whole until the elite 'freaks' entered the fray. Then it went a little overly magical than it needed to.
Daredevil wasn't mentioned at all in the entire film even though it went into her past (training and previous traumas) and there was only a passing comment on how she was brought back from the dead.
Not being deep in the Elektra comic and having loved Jennifer in Alias and Daredevil, I liked this film a lot even with my above comments - my overall feeling was nice!
In Conclusion
Is the set worth it? YES
If it's just the Daredevil Director's cut and Elektra you're missing, there is a set with just these.
If you weren't sure about X-men first time around and haven't bought them, this set is only a few pounds more than the DD and Elektra set mentioned above - so definitely get this one and you'll be happy. ;)
