Race of Champions - DVD of disappointment.......2008-03-10

This should - could - have been a great DVD, documenting a highly entertaining battle between the biggest names in motorsport. Yet it lacks both in quality and quantity, and falls severely flat.

Let's start with quantity. At a paltry hour long, including beginners' introductions to the event and a smattering of interviews, there was never going to be enough time to show much racing footage. Why not save the beginners' introduction for the extras?
What this means is that, despite the fact that each race lasted 2 minutes or less, none of them are shown in their entirety. It makes the races incredibly difficult to follow - more so since the lap was longer or shorter depending on which lane the driver started in (both drivers used each lane in the race), so occasionally the driver who appears to be in the lead after lap 1 was actually behind overall.
Why not extend the coverage, or at least show the finals in full?
The extras are also lacking. The Drivers' Briefing delivers most of the entertainment to be found in the DVD (David Coulthard suggesting he doesn't mind drivers being penalised for corner cutting, because "I haven't hit an apex all day..."), and the full Colin McRae tribute shown on the big screens is also included. The only other extra is a pointless 60-second video related to tyres, which seems more of a nod to the sponsors than something to interest fans. Even including the extras, the whole thing lasts less than an hour and 20 minutes.

The lack of racing footage also affects quality. From a seat in the stadium, it was obvious how much better than the other drivers Michael Schumacher was in the RoC buggy. There's no man on earth with car control sublime enough to have beaten Schuey in the buggy, yet from the sparse footage on the DVD it's impossible to get any idea of how perfectly he was drifting through every corner of every lap. There were also cameras in the cars, yet this footage is barely used on the DVD.
Let's move onto the commentary, provided by Neil Cole, who currently presents WRC coverage in the UK. On this DVD he sounds thoroughly disinterested. Remarkably, he manages to talk about the wrong driver on a couple of occasions. How on earth did the producers not notice?
The errors would be forgivable if he showed any enthusiasm - no-one minds Murray Walker making a mistake or two because he can read a shopping list and make it sound exciting. If Murray wasn't available, what about Ben Edwards, or Charlie Cox?

For the quality of the racing and amazing selection of champions present, it climbs above a 1 star rating. But from a company as well-known and respected in this field as Duke, you'd expect much better.

Great Dvd.......2006-04-26

Brilliant dvd, a great watch, so what if its their choice and not yours, the players they've chosen are all world class and the music they show them to is great aswell.
Not only do they show the 10 players but also great goals etc from the last 10 yrs from teams in the conference to teams you've never heard of!
It also shows my fave goal of all time, di canios scissor kick which the first dvd illegally missed out

Easy Easy Easy Watching.......2006-02-16

If you like soccer am or just a fan of football in general this is essential viewing.All the favourites are in there; Barry, Stan Hibbert, Sheephead, Tubes and of course rocket. Packed with the gags and laughs that make soccer am so great.

One complaint, wheres Di Canio?

How long did it take them to come up with this?.......2006-01-17

As if 'cheeky lad's lad' Tim Lovejoy isn't already satisfied with the reams of money he's made from the repetitive once funny gags of his show Soccer AM he's racked his brains for another excuse for a DVD.

10 Greatest players of the last 10 years? Wow, that's just great, as if we really care what you think, get back to doing your 'EASY' chant, oh wait, actually, just be quiet.

I can safely say Soccer AM's 6th DVD 'Greatest players of the last 10 years: '2007' will be out next year, infesting itself in your stocking and sapping joy from your lives, just stop. Please.
