Nothing special.......2005-07-26
Moon 44 is one of Roland Emmerich's early movies. The story is quite simply (maybe a touch too simple).
It's the year 2038, large inter-galactic corporations fight against each other for control over moons, which have become the last source of minerals for Earth. The Galactic Mining Corp., which has lost a number of operations already, and whose last operation happens to be Moon 44 sends in Michael Pare as undercover agent to discover why the previously lost Moons' mining shuttles didn't return to Earth but instead vanished into space. His cover are a bunch of convicts which are 'hired' to provide Moon 44's last line of defence. Pare uncovers the plot; the convicts become a unified force and save the Moon from attack and manage to escape at the same time. That's the story in a nutshell.
Occasionally you can catch glimpses of features, Emmerich uses in his later Sci-fi movies. What I did like was the set design and some of the special effects. But apart from that, there is no real plot, the movie is packed with clichés, the hero comes over like a copy from some B-rated Western and there is not much of an ending either.

Although this movie is not very good, it is entertaining. Being made in the early 90s the look of the movie is still quite good. Moon 44 is set in the future, whereby moons are important for the mining industry. Michael Pare is an undercover agent, who investigates the disappearance of several moons. Because of the disappearing, pilots are hard to find. That is when ex-prisoners are brought in to fly. The pilots are navigated by a bunch of whiz kids, but there is a lot of friction between the two groups. This really contributes to the tension in the movie. The acting of most actors is good, except for the main character played by Michael Pare. His performance is really awful, lacks any emotion and is outplayed by literally every other actor in the movie. As the whiz kids Tyler and Cookie, Dean Devlin and Stephen Geoffreys have the most interesting roles. Dean Devlin plays his character very natural and Stephen Geoffreys' character even develops during the movie (that haircut!). On the other hand the main problem is that the bad guys have tattooed "BAD" on their foreheads and I do not mean solely the prisoners. So there goes the surprise. Okay, there are some gaps in the script, but in the end I enjoyed watching Moon 44 and that's the only thing that counts.
