Amazon.co.uk Review

Francis Ford Coppola's passable 1986 comedy stars Kathleen Turner as an unhappy, middle-aged woman who goes back in time to her high school years and meets her future husband (Nicolas Cage) all over again. A lightweight entry from Coppola, the film has some clever, backward-looking jokes; and the lead actress does bring intelligence and searching emotions to her role. Cage (Coppola's nephew)--who specialised in these dumb-guy roles back then (see Raising Arizona)--is in sharp, raw form. Worth a visit, but don't expect to be bowled over this time by the legendary director.--Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

3 out of 5 stars "I Have Too Many Unresolved Relationships".......2008-01-21

Peggy Sue (Kathleen Turner) is facing the prospect of her 25th high school reunion. Making it even worse, she and her husband, high school sweetheart Charlie Bodell (Nicolas Cage) are in the middle of a divorce because Peggy Sue has finally gotten tired of his affairs. And so she shows up with her daughter Beth (Helen Hunt).

Things are actually going well until Charlie shows up. Then Peggy Sue wins homecoming queen. It's all too much for her, and she faints.

When she comes too, Peggy Sue finds herself back in 1960. She's eighteen again and reliving the last few months of high school. Between panic attacks about what this could mean, she tries to grasp her second chance at her life. Can she avoid the last 25 years of pain? Does she really want to?

The movie walks a fine line between comedy and drama and never quite seems to strike the right balance. There are some very funny bits, but those just make the drama seem more over the top and over wrought. And the comedy is stuff we've seen done elsewhere better many other times.

The cast features a number of early performances from actors better known today. Besides the ones already mentioned, we see Jim Carrey and Joan Allen, for example. Most of the cast is fine. My biggest problem was with Nicolas Cage. For some reason, he gives Charlie a weird nasally voice. Frankly, it makes me wonder what Peggy Sue ever saw in him. On the plus side, he gets to show off his excellent singing voice.

Finally, there's the story. It works. But it is left too open ended. That's probably caused by an ending that is way too abrupt to deal with everything brought up. It asks all kinds of questions, but the answers are thrown at us so fast it doesn't really explain how the characters arrived at them. As a result, the ending goes from being open ended to unsatisfactory.

The movie isn't bad, but it's really not good either. It's certainly fun watching if you are a fan of the current work of this young cast. But if you haven't seen it, you haven't really missed much, either.

5 out of 5 stars Back in time.......2007-05-31

Sometimes I wish I was like Peggy Sue- going back in time to those college and university days. A middle aged lady in a difficult marriage goes to a high school reunion, swoons and then finds herself 18 again. How I wish it were me. Great performances by Kathleen Turner- the actress with the sexiest ever voice.

4 out of 5 stars Heart-warming film........2006-05-28

Peggy Sue is a bored, unhappy middle-aged mother whose marriage to Charlie Bodell, her childhood sweetheart, is on the rocks. At a high school reunion Peggy Sue collapses and wakes to find she has somehow been transported back to her teen years. As she gets over the initial shock she realises she has the chance to relive her life and maybe make some drastic changes. She also realises she can change the lives of those around her, such as when she encourages one class mate to invent panty-hose and encourages others to invest in things she knows will succeed in the future. Of course those around Peggy Sue are confused by her newly serious nature, particularly Charlie who cannot understand why she is so cool toward him.
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the film stars Nicholas Cage as Charlie and Kathleen Turner as Peggy Sue, and watch out for a very young Jim Carrey as Walter, a friend of the young couple. Although the lead actors play their parts well, and try to be believable as teenagers, the fact that they both look far to old to be teens does detract from the film a little. That aside, this is a heart-warming film with some very witty moments. It will make you laugh and cry in equal amounts and, although it looks a little dated now, it is still worth a look.

3 out of 5 stars Worth it just for Nic Cage's dodgy accent!.......2004-01-20

This film stars a very young Nick Cage, Jim Carrey, and has Kathleen Turner all playing "teens", which is unconvincing from Turner whom looks 30-something through out the movie.

The film is quite charming really; it's one of "them" films that asks, "what if?"

The story is about Peggy Sue, who got married (duh).
An alternative life is presented to her where she is not married.

Cue a hideous accent by the world's greatest actor (tm) Nic Cage, and we are all set for a good movie. Don't let my waffle about Cage's accent put you off, there is a scene, where his acting pays off, and is great that CAGE INSISTED that he used the accent to his uncle Director.

Okay the film is a little dated now, but is a great addition to
Rom-com fans.

5 out of 5 stars If only we could all go back in time..........2003-09-02

This is an excellent film, ive owned it for many years on VHS but couldnt wait till the DVD came out. Its about a couple who are going through problems and their High School RE-union is fast approaching. At the re-union something happens and we have a "back in time" film. Peggy Sue gets a chance we would all probably love to take - to go back to High School and do it all again - but different?! Does she? Its an excellent film, brining back memories, times that were, and keeps you glued to the TV all the way through. Its a shame there never was Peggy Sue Got married 2. Well worth watching !!!!
