A Magica movie.......2006-08-08
This is a very ethereal film made all the more wonderful by both the music and star performances. Miss Spinney (Ethel Barrymore) is sublime as always playing the old maid so obviously in love with artist Eben Adams (Joseph Cotton) who in his turn loves Jenny (Jenifer Jones) who is far too young for him. The magical atmospheric changes when the ghost appears are beautifully crafted as are the storm scenes at the end of the picture. All in all this film is a must for all fans of Ethel Barrymore and for those who have as yet to see her work.
Essential b/w movie.......2006-04-21
An unusual movie classic with a fantastic soundtrack that will appeal to teen/twenty-somethings. I have a worn-out VHS & UK Region 2 DVD [no known differences], brilliant. Those who appreciate 1940's b/w movies can safely let the 'kids' watch this ghost-story. I put it up-there with An Inspector Calls [1948] & I Married A Witch [1942]. It's a shame the studios do not include more digitally remastered trailers given copyright is not a real issue [stars worked for wages 50 years ago] & many classics are unknown to most of this planets population.
Capturing The Silent World.......2006-04-15
This extremely unusual film is especially recommended to those people who are sure within themselves that there is a much more complicated meaning to the living world than is ordinarily perceived. From almost the beginning, the intelligent viewer is given a precious key to the realization of inspirational hopes and, for some, even a kindred experience. Jennifer Jones, most joyfully, is still living though hauntingly perfect as Jennie, and Joseph Cotton gave a profound performance that appears spellbound by this story. In fact, the painting of Jennie was afterwards producer David O. Selznick's very proud possession and hung in his home when he married Jennifer Jones the following year in 1949. Despite occasional minor weaknesses, this is truly a most deeply memorable and intriguingly romantic film that has the uncommon power to make one's sad times happier during the rest of one's life!

I have only seen this film only the once, and I recall it was on a Sunday afternoon. I only started watching this film has there was not much else on, however when it finished, i wanted to watch it again, and I stayed up late so that i could watch the repeat showing.what make this stand out was the other world feeling of it,the photography,the feel of New York in a bygone era, and the music,(Dubsi)which was haunting adds to the overall ambiance,Beneath the story,about a struggling painter who is at a loss with trying to be successful in selling his work, meets a young girl in Central Park, has he is absorbed with the haunting look of the girl he decides to paint her portrait, which immediately is a success, then all through the film he meets a growing "jennie" whom is his muse of sorts, but slowly falls for her though, you can read into a lot of metaphorical stuff - cleverly done. The ending is both heartening yet crucifying, emotionally a story of two star crossed lovers, The overall realisation that through the barrier of time love is enduring and never ending, a beautify film which is a must for all romantics out there. Highly recommended

I watched the movie several times. Even bought the video. Then I read the book. I suggest that you do it the other way around. Both have their strong points. The feel is the same. However the book allowed other people to see and interact with Jennie. In the movie only Eben sees Jennie. The portrait in the bar is different; it is probably some adjustment for the time of the movie. And the ending is different. I am not sure which ending I like best. One interesting notation on the movie, it was shot with a filter that made the movie have a texture that looks like a portrait.
Any way I do not want to describe the plot. So I will tell you that it was nicer to get the Hardcover Buccaneer book, than some old yellowing thing from a secondhand store that costs just as much. I have it next to the video and still re-read it periodically.
