From a time long, long ago..........2008-03-16

I have fond memories of watching Indoor League while eating my lunch on school days. In the afternoon we would try-out our Fred Trueman impressions, with imaginary pipe and pint.

Watching these DVDs now, it seems hard to believe this took place only thirty-odd years ago. It looks to have been made in a different age. Was I really about in these times! However, it's charmingly nostalgic. Many of the participants seem terribly middle-aged (although they were probably much younger). They play the games in suits and ties and the commentators gives us useful background information, such as the headmaster who plays bar billiards (could that happen now?).

I've thoroughly enjoyed seeing it again. Clearly it can only be targeted at people who watched it before; I suspect anybody under thirty would be bemused that this once passed as entertainment. My only complaint would be the rather miserly three episodes they have provided here. Could they not at least have given us a full series? Now I'll have to wait to find out who wins the £100 for the skittles championship.

Just got hold of a copy of the greatest DVD release of the year so far .... Yorkshire TV's Indoor League.

Forget Skinner & Baddiel taking the mickey out of it on 'Fantasy Football', this was the dogs wot-sits of telly in the early 70s.

Fronted by sporting hero Fred Trueman and live 'from the Queens Hotel in Leeds', contestants from all across christendom (well, the Yorkshire TV area) battled it out for the top prize of £100 per sport.

Trueman was clad in what became almost a uniform in Northern England at the time, consisting of kipper tie, brown cardigan and complete with the standard tap room pint & pipe. All topped off with Fred's fantastic hair do and at last you might guess what he did with that Brylcream endorsement after he packed in test match cricket.

Contests included darts (on a Yorkshire board mind, none of this Southern 'trebles' rubbish), Shove Ha'penny, Bar Billiards, Table Football and even (Cheese) Skittles .... The programme gave gainful employment to commentating greats, the likes of Keith Macklin and Dave Lanning during the three day week and between stints of World Of Sport.

Ladies and Gentlemen .... This is the sort of thing that the public want. It got great viewing figures in the region (providing there wasn't a power cut on) Forget Celebrity Islands or which soap star can sing, this was proper telly.

So, let us salute another great Sid Wadell idea (well before he started his 'panto' act on the Darts or even Jossy's Giants) and get your copy of Indoor League made in the days when 'goodness me, you made the best of it ...'

Seve, a video feast........2008-01-11

I loved this video, as it showed clips of his genius from his very early days to his sad retirement from the game in 2007.

As an ardent Seve watcher, I have viewed a lot of the action before, however there are still many amazing shots which I had not seen at all. On the other hand, I still have not seen on video his miraculous fairway bunker shot with a 3 wood at the 18th hole in the 1983 Ryder Cup to halve his match with Fuzzy Zoeller.
I was hoping to see it as it is described enough by friends and in many book and magazine articles. Where is the clip? Help!

However, this DVD is great value and I would also recommend that Seve's newly published autobiography would compliment this DVD very well for any true golf lover.

There is a scene where Seve tries to copy his younger days as he endeavours to get his leg over a wall to enter his local golf club. Priceless!!

Best Golf DVD out there, on a Legend of the game!!! .......2007-10-09

Superbly made film about a sporting Hero. This traces Seve's life from his poor up-bringing to his legendary status in the Golfing World. Seve takes us through how he learnt to play through to some of the greatest moments in his career.With interviews from some of the top golfing stars, all giving their favourite memories of shots / moments from Seve. It wasn't just that Seve won, but how he won & how he played the game, that made him a legend. This is the best golf DVD out there about the most charismatic golfer to play the game. Must own for any Golf/sport fan..

Fantastic documentary!.......2007-10-09

I bought this DVD yesterday as Seve is one of my sporting heroes and it is one of the best documentaries i have ever seen. The participation and openness by Seve and the stories and thoughts from the world of golf, such as Tiger Woods, Tom Watson and Nick Faldo really make this an enjoyable and fascinating watch. The program charts Seve from a little boy growing up all the way through the ups and downs of his career (mostly ups), with Seve talking about his life and experiences, containing some brilliant footage (you forget HOW amazing he actually was!), through to his retirement this year. A must see for all golf and sporting fans, the story of a genius!!

This dvd is great it reviews all of the senior tt races through different decades and it really show you the difference between how many visitors there is from selected decades and also makes you realise how much the bikes have changed from 1907 to 2007.
