Thumb Wars: The Phantom Cuticle [1999] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

Amazon.co.uk Review

Thumb Wars is a parody of Star Wars in which all the characters are played by real human thumbs with equally real human eyes and mouths grafted onto them through the wonders of computerised image tweakery. Obvious, really. If you're a fan of the toy and puppets dramas on The Adam and Joe Show or, frankly, even if you're not, you'll love this. Quite apart from the inherent wonderful silliness of mastermind Steve Oedekerk's creations, the mickey-taking is of a high order as Loke Groundrunner, Hand Duet and Princess Bunhead, aided by Oobedoob Benubi, battle the forces of the evil Thumbpire (the stormtroopers wear thimbles) in order to destroy the "big dangerous weapon thing that can blow stuff up".

Along the way, Luke and Oobedoop replay Bunhead's holographic message while lying on the floor so they can look up her dress, the two robots have sex and Hand Duet insists on being paid in girly giggles. The eventual destruction of the "big dangerous weapon thing" will have you in stitches, with Groundrunner attempting to use "the power of the Thumb" while the spirit of Oobedoob urges him to "use the instrument panel, Luke--that's what it's there for". --Roger Thomas

4 out of 5 stars Thumb Wars.......2004-06-28

If you are one those people who is sick of all the stars wars hip then dvd is for you. It take the piss out of Star Wars but in a clean allmost homesome way! It is quite short. Buy it for that obsessed friend/family member of yours who lives out Star Wars in real life just to annoy them!

5 out of 5 stars hilarious surreal fun.......2004-05-30

After visiting the thumb.com website and seeing the preview I had to get thumb wars. Yes, it's Star Wars with thumbs in, which, provided you're in the right mood, is humourous enough (especially the 'thumb' that plays Luke's uncle) but the script is sharp too, just incase the thumbs-as-people idea gets old. It's done a really good job of what was no doubt a 'mucking around with the computer in the basement on a rainy day' concept. The best thing is that there are other short films by Steve Oedekerk featuring all your favourite thumbs.

5 out of 5 stars the best star wars spoof since spaceballs.......2002-12-29

i bought this without seeing the "film" (29 minutes long) first, and was skeptical of a feature film involving thumbs, but i was pleasantely surprised with the very funny result.
it is written by the guy that made 'Patch Adams' and 'Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls', so as you can see this isn't some small project by a little known writer who doesn't know the ins and outs of the movie business.

you just have to look at the cover of the box to see how seriously funny this show is, and how it can poke fun at Star Wars.

The film is basically set to the main them of the original Star Wars film ('A New Hope'), with added parts of 'The Empire Strikes Back' film in aswell.

The story starts with the Thumbpire's attack ship capturing a Thumbellion ship, carrying the Princess Bunhead onboard.
Black Helmet Man makes an appearance to seek information from her, while the droids escape to the sand planet below.
There they meet up with Loke Groundrunner (Luke Skywalker parody), and some friends who go after the Princess, who holds valuable information on how to destroy the Thumbpire's most deadly weapon, a pardoy of the original Star Wars Death Star, but here its in the shape of a giant thumb.
Along the way Loke meets up with a small green alien called 'Puppet', who is a Thumb Master, and wishes to teach Loke the ways of the Thumb.

Apart from the very funny story, the special effects in the space battle scene's are surprisingly well done, and isn't that far away from the special effects of the new Star Wars films.

All in all, great comedy, and if you're a Star Wars fan you will love this.
Along with the film on the DVD, you can see future 'thumb' projects in the future, of spoofing other films, with trailers for films like 'Bat Thumb' and 'Frankenthumb'.
May the thumb be with you.

4 out of 5 stars A must-have for any F1 fan!.......2003-01-06

It is not often that you hear Murray Walker, the "voice of Formula One", preaching his opinion on who is the best driver of all time, but on this DVD, you can find out exactly what Murray thinks of the big names of the past such as Senna and Fangio, and reigning World Champion Michael Schumacher.

The first thing you will be presented with upon loading the DVD is the main menu. Although it is rather sluggish to navigate, it has a nice design, with Grand Prix footage rolling in the background, and the lay out is very simple. You have the choice of watching Murray's top 10 all in one go, starting with ten through to his number one. However, if you wish to get the low down on just one particular driver, you can skip along to him on a timeline-like menu.

So, what about the content? Boasting footage that has never been released before is an exciting prospect, and despite the fact that there doesn't appear to be a lot of it, there is the odd gem such as a camera onboard Fangio's car, and a ride with Senna around Monaco on a hot qualifying lap - great stuff! There is plenty of up-to-date archive footage such as Schumacher winning his fifth World Championship, and all the legendary confrontations between Senna and Prost, Schumacher and Hill, all with the man himself commentating.

Of course, while the pictures are moving, Murray is narrating and explaining why he thinks such and such a driver is so good, and it really is an interesting and informative compilation. Needless to say, being DVD, the picture and sound quality is excellent, and the additional features you get are are joy to watch. The highlight for sure is Martin Brundle taking Murray for the ride of his life in the two-seater McLaren F1 car.

The only reason I haven't given "Murray Walker's F1 Greats" the full five stars, is that I feel it has one or two weak points. As I mentioned, the menu navigation is a little sluggish, which can be frustrating, and a couple of Murray's driver reviews are quite brief, leaving you wanting more.

However, for any Formula One fan, this is a definite must-have. Some excellent racing footage plus some fantastic extra features, all presented by the great Murray Walker, makes for an exciting and informative DVD for fans and others alike. I recommend it!

this dvd is ok but thats it ok!. i felt it lacks in certain areas and the commentry doesnt flow well. they move from 1 game to the next to quickly, the older arsenal reviews 2003,2004,2005 seasons are much better of this dvd. not great but ok.

3 out of 5 stars Another dissapointing season but one Spurs could only dream of.......2007-06-24

The dvd summary looks on the brightside to another dissapointing season that brought no trophies (ignoring the ladies), but perhaps the season shall be looked on with more fondness in the future if arsenals 'young guns' do indeed go on and become world-class like their predecessors...

Well produced like all of arsenal's season review dvds, the film is still full of high points and lovely goals (Like Robin VP's incredible volley) from a season Spurs can only dream of, especially given the absense of Henry and RVP for much of the season.
Well done too to the ladies team aswell; an unbelievable achievement to win four trophies.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Showing!.......2006-06-19

Avoid this DVD! It cannot make up its mind whether it is a histrocial documentary about Argentina or a football documentary (the reason I bought it!!) about Maradona. Sunbsequently it fails at both. Also the football coverage is extremely poor: really bad camera angles and fuzzy slow motion pics. Avoid at all costs!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Doc on the life and times of Maradona.......2005-03-26

I first saw this top notch Doc on ITV during the last World cup.
The programme gives a real insight into what makes Maradona tick, as well as showing many of the greatest goals he scored in his career and some unique archive of maradona playing football as a boy.
If you want a bit more of a Biography than a parade of goals then this is the DVD for you.
Makes an excellent companion to his recently published biography.

2 out of 5 stars More politics than football.......2004-08-07

Avoid this poor DVD on the legendry Maradona. If you want a DVD about Eva Peron and the Argentinian dictators of the 70's and 80's then this is perfect for you. However if you want to see loads of clips of Maradona in action then stay away from this disappointing release. I wouldn't mind so much about the political stuff if they made up for it by showing more of Maradona playing. None of his goals and skills for Argentinos Juniors, Boca Juniors and Barcelona are shown at all. The only clips of Maradona in action are clips of the junior world cup in 1978, a few from the 82 world cup, most of the matches from the 1986/1990 world cups (which most of us have already seen), (only) 2 of the 116 goals he scored for Napoli and the goal against Greece in the 94 world cup, thats pretty much it. If you want a good dvd on Maradona buy Diego Maradona - His Life which contains hundreds of his goals and amazing skills.

1 out of 5 stars do not buy at any cost.......2004-07-04

This dvd has only two league goals scored by maradona on it and both are when he played for Napoli. They show about five international goals all at very bad camera angles. This is a dvd about Argentina's political crisis over the past century with five minutes of clips of Maradona. The worst possible film about the worlds greatest ever player, search around for a different film if there is one but do not buy this at any cost. It should be sold for £0.99 not £12.99. I would have given it no stars but amazon don't let you do that.
