Highlights of English Cricket Through The Years.......2006-02-13
And was I impressed? Well, I expected to see some good footage on these DVDs and the quality of the recordings is to be commended, although occasionally you will need to turn the volume up on your TV to be able to hear some of the commentary (but just occasionally).
We also get to see some nail-biting contests, such as Headingley and Edgebaston '81, Allan Lamb's tense ODI in Sydney 1987 as well as some absolutely splendid performances by our lads, such as the 1985 and 1986/87 Ashes Series and Graham Gooch's spectacular performances against India at Lord's in 1990, not forgetting the cracking debut of the now sadly deceased Ben Hollioake in May 1997.
The only real niggle in this product is that the matches go by too quickly and not enough time is dedicated to them (approx 10 minutes each, sometimes less). I would like to have seen detailed coverage of both sides' efforts.
The product is hosted by David Steele (70s), David Gower (80s) and Mike Atherton (90s) and their insights to the matches are both thoughtful and insightful, despite the fact that the introductions and conclusions of each DVD are word-for-word carbon copies of each other. Each ex-player's contribution more than makes up for this, though. I almost split my sides laughing when David Steele tells the story of his antics while trying to get to the crease at Lord's in 1975.
We also get some bonus footage on each disc, the most impressive of these being the Viv Richards profile, supplemented by plenty of stock footage of the man in action.
So, is this a set to buy if you are a cricket fan? Well if you want to see some great players in action and have bonus material to go through at the end, then click on the 'Add to Basket' sign on this page and go to the checkout. Just be prepared to view the entire set in one sitting.
