4 out of 5 stars Great DVD but more Thai boxing than Shaolin Kung Fu.......2007-09-24

Make no mistake this an excellent DVD and Shifu Yan Lei is certainly a master of the highest order. The reason I've only given it 4 stars is firstly its a little short at 60 mins but maybe Shifu Yan Lei is a victim of his own success in that respect in that you just cant get enough of the guy. Secondly the DVD is more Thai boxing orientated, i.e. fighting in the ring rather than focussing on traditional Shaolin Kung Fu. Thats not necessarily a bad thing but it makes the title a little misleading. Anyway the format of the DVD is as follows. First of all Shifu gives us a little history of Shaolin Kung Fu and goes over the basic Shaolin punches and kicks. He then talks about how he goes on to fighting in a ring but loses his first fight which causes him to reassess his Shaolin techniques. As a result he modifies his Shaolin training to give it a more Thai boxing/boxing flavour in order to serve him better for gloved combat in the ring. The highlights in this DVD for me are the snippets of the iron shirt steel body training that he does to toughen his body. Definitely a case of "dont try this at home" as he beats his body with bricks and allows other monks to break sticks across his body. Equally impressive are his hard shin kicks against bamboo poles. Although not necessarily a dedicated training DVD I do believe that anyone practicing any form of martial arts can take something useful away from this DVD with respect to their own training. As an example "If a small man fights a big man he will be scared but if the small man has an iron bar then he will not be scared". He then shows us how he trains to make his arms like iron bars. Gems such as this make the DVD worth buying. If nothing else it will motivate you.

5 out of 5 stars shaolin warrior dvd review.......2006-07-11

I bought this dvd on recommendation by a friend and I have to say that I am extremely impressed. What sets this dvd apart from its peers is the fact that Shifu Yan Lei is a genuine 34th generation fighting desciple from the Shaolin Temple in China and is allowing us to see excactly what it takes to train as a Shaolin fighter. The dvd is broken down into sections, allowing us to focus on each particular aspect of training(from traditional through to pad and bag work). This dvd gives us a sense of history and culture whist at the same time highlighting its modern day relevance. It appears a lot of pride has gone into making this dvd and the production is of a very high standard when compared to similar productions.I have since bought Shifu Yan Lei,s 'fighting punches and kicks'and again I am equally impressed. The 'Shaolin warrior'series by Shifu Yan Lei, is a worthy addition to any serious martial arists arsenal and I look forward to any future releases.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent viewing, but don't treat this as a training DVD.......2006-06-29

Having read the negative review it would appear that people believe this to be a "How-to..." instructional DVD. My interpretation is that the point of this DVD is to show you authentic Shaolin training techniques, not to teach you them, hence the title "A Kung Fu Journey". If you are inspired to learn Shaolin Kung Fu by watching this DVD (and you will be, I promise!), I suggest you make the effort to attend Shifu Yan Lei's classes. I have had the honour of being taught by Shifu Yan Lei at his Oxford seminar, and a DVD is no substitute for the real thing.

I would recommend this DVD whole-heartedly to anyone interested in martial arts as it gives an insight into the willpower and perseverance it takes to be an effective Fung Fu practitioner. Kung Fu (gong fu) translates into English as "time and sweat", and you'll appreciate that a lot more upon viewing this DVD!

5 Stars!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best martial arts DVDs around.......2005-11-15

The training in this DVD requires no equipment or only basics like a skipping rope or punch bag. It shows traditional Shaolin forms, punches and kicks both in real time and slow motion - the slow motion being a great training aid to fine tune your movements. It also has modern fighting techniques and conditioning exercises so covers internal kung fu aswell. I have loads of Martial arts DVDs and books - if you were going to get just one DVD I would recommend this one.

1 out of 5 stars Not Good.......2005-08-03

I bought this expecting it to be a training dvd that I could do as I watched it.
Nope, it gave a very brief insight into martial arts then showed clips of his training routin. Which is useless to me as I have none of his equiptment and can't do most of the things he does.
I can't see how this dvd would be benificial to anyone.

    3 out of 5 stars Awful commentaries.......2007-05-16

What could have been an excellent DVD is spoiled by the awful commentary from the inane Tyne Tees commentary team of Roger Tames and Simon O'Rourke.
The whole package has a cheap and nasty feel to it but it's the only DVD of the 2004-05 season so if you want to see it then this is your only option.
Worth the £6 that I paid for it but I wouldn`t advise anyone to pay more.
