Superb Cage Match Compilation From WWE!.......2003-11-28
WWE have also made a conscious effort not to make the main feature nothing more than a series of matches. Instead, they've given it more of a "TV Show"-style approach. Entitled "Blood Bath", the compilation is presented by The Coach from the WWE studio.
Coach takes us through each of the matches in turn, sometimes giving the viewer a little insight into how the match came about. In edited format (some more so than others), we see Bob Backlund VS Pat Patterson (1979), Bruno Sammartino VS Larry Zbysko (1980), Bob Backlund VS Jimmy Snuka (1980), Jimmy Snuka VS Don Muraco (1983), Magnum TA VS Tully Blanchard ("I Quit" rules, 1985), Hulk Hogan VS Paul Orndorff (1987), Ric Flair VS Ron Garvin (1987), Bret Hart VS Owen Hart (1994), Isaac Yankem VS Bret Hart (1995), HHH VS Mankind (1997), HHH VS The Rock (1999), Stone Cold VS Mr McMahon (1999), Edge & Christian VS The Hardy Boyz (2000), Kurt Angle VS Chris Benoit (2001), and Edge VS Kurt Angle (2002).
Due to the editing, it is sometimes hard to get into the flow of some of the matches, and the "Attitude Era" ones in particular (from 1999-2001) are heavily trimmed, obviously due to the court case with The World Wildlife Fund. On the subject of "WWF Attitude", it's very surprising to see The Rock's steel cage scuffle with HHH from the UK event, Rebellion 99' included on this DVD (WWE hardly ever make a big deal out of UK events, and The Rock and HHH even had a cage match on Raw in the U.S. that could have been included).
However, allot of these matches are featured in their entirity on disc 2 anyway. Also, between the matches, we occasionally get comments from the likes of Spike Dudley, Tommy Dreamer, Jerry Lawler and Gerald Briscoe about that particular match.
The DVD extras alone make this a worthy purchase. The matches offered in full are Backlund VS Patterson (a fair, but not too spectacular match), Snuka VS Muraco (a good bout with a memorable finish), Magnum TA VS Blanchard (a brutal, bloody, gripping affair), Bret Hart VS Owen Hart (possibly the best cage match ever), HHH VS Mankind (highly entertaining fare), and Edge VS Angle (exciting TV match).
There's also some different matches to be found as extras (Sammartino VS Ivan Koloff, Backlund VS Stan Hansen, Flair VS Dusty Rhodes, Rock N' Roll Express VS Andersons, Shawn Michaels VS Marty Jannetty). All these matches are good in their own way, apart from Sammartino VS Koloff (which is terrible).
Overall, WWE's attempt at doing something different (and something that will appeal to fans from all generations) has paid off royally. This is truly one of the greatest wrestling DVD's of all time, no question.
