2 out of 5 stars 50 years? Not even 50 minutes!.......2007-08-06

I rented this and it just about was worth the £2 it cost to do that. It jumps from 1957 to the 70s with barely a shot from the 60s. Very poor value.

5 out of 5 stars THIS DVD DELIVERS.......2007-05-24

The DVD is split into 2 distinct parts. The first part is as it says on the tin "50 years on board". Excellent footage, mainly captured on board car, starting in the fifties and ending very recently. The quality of the camera work is high-surprisingly better on the earlier footage. The ambient sounds seem to be mainly captured with the original footage. The emphasis is on exhilaration even though a lof of the footage is of practice sessions - this is about driving more than racing. The narration, mainly from ex racers, is sparse, complements the camera very well and never intrudes once the cars are under way. The sense of acceleration, speed, enormous power and the way the cars slide is all captured. The cars with manual gearboxes and without traction devices are particularly exhilarating to watch. The senna footage is breathtaking.

The only criticism I have of the first part of the DVD is that there's not enough of it.

The second part of the DVD is possibly a way of filling in run time, as the first part is too short. It is a concise run down of all formula one world champions and is not really in the same vein as the first part. Even so it is not spoiled by the "bontempi" background music which seems to be an infuriating trademark of most other DVD'S. This fact alone justifies the 5 star rating!

2 out of 5 stars Formula One's Greatest Hits (not).......2006-12-21

Agree with all of the above that this is a good concept but a missed opportunity and any enthusiast will be familiar with most of the clips. The overhead shots at Monaco in 1973 are exceptionally clear and the 1967 practice session at the Nurburgring is interesting in so far as it shows you how close the trees and bushes are, but a full lap of the old ring would have been good. The Fangio clip has been well used and the later clips are largely uninspiring. I would have rather watched Senna's mesmeric lap at Monaco in 1988 for example than the rather odd and uneventful choice of Suzuka thrown in here. For edge of the seat onboard stuff better to purchase Frankenheimer's Grand Prix! and fast forward to Monaco or Spa. The DVD - and the strangely rave reviews it got on release - though does show up the paucity of F1 DVDs, and the burning gap for a 'best of Grand Prix..' The closest we have is the Murray Walker DVD that came out in 2002 or better still if you can track it down a video (not out on DVD) released in 1992 titled the History of Formula One. Only 60 minutes but originally shown on BBC and a very well packaged F1 highlights from 1950 to 1990.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth the money.......2005-12-29

What a rip off.... They seem to have missed most to the 80's out no coverage of Nigel Mansell.. what happened to those silly fast laps from the turbo days.... I guess this just sums up F1 today its just for the fat cats and not the fans... when will they learn... or will they never!

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-02-08

Given the thousands of hours of onboard action available, they really did choose some exceptionally dull footage.
I was hoping for action - overtaking, slides, offs, accidents, start line action. What I got was single laps of cars mostly by themselves. Where was Ayrton Senna hitting Martin Brundle from behind in the rain? Where was Jean Alesi applying tons of opposite lock with one hand whilst showing 'the bird' with the other at Adelaide in the Ferrari. This DVD does not have any excitment in it whatsoever. If you're looking for racing action, forget it.
The second section of the DVD has a brief clip (10 seconds?) of every F1 World Champion, and that's it.
Apart from some nice footage of the original Nurburgring, this DVD is pointless. It is not worth the money - and I'm saying this as a huge 'never miss a race' F1 fan.

3 out of 5 stars Good, but not great.......2004-03-12

The excitement and the fury of the last two UFC events was always going to be hard to top, and it's no real suprise that this dvd feels like it's lacking something (a main event perhaps...)

Most of the fights are watchable - after the beating he took from Tim Sylvia it's good to see that Cabbage can still walk and talk (and punch), and after one great win and an unlucky loss, Gloucester's finest Mark Wier gets back in the Octagon, giving us Brits a ome-town boy to cheer on. Lawler v Spratt was brimming with potential, but ends rather disappointingly, and the fight of the night between Genki Sudo and Bang Ludwig is let down by a poor ruling in the 3rd round, which swung the outcome of the fight and clearly blinded the judges to what had gone on in the previous 2. The so-called main event isn't dreadful, but it' just not a main event fight. I like Matt Hughes as much as the next man, but recently his fights have lacked the action and excitement that made me a fan in the first place, and his 'safety first' attitude, while understandable, doesn't make for a great fight.

If you're a UFC fan, buy this (for no other reason that it will stop you thinking of Cabbage as a punch-bag with legs) but this is not a dvd that will convert newcomers to the MMA game - show them Chuck v Tito instead...

4 out of 5 stars Great addition to your collection.......2004-01-18

DOUBLE MAIN EVENT:

Matt Hughes (welterweight champion) Vs Sean Sherk
"Ruthless" Robbie Lawler Vs Pete Spratt

UNDERCARD:

Mark Weir Vs David Loiseau (prelim)
Hermes Franca Vs Richard Crunkilton (prelim)
David Strasser Vs Romie Aram (prelim)
Genki Sudo Vs Bang Ludwig
Rich Franklin Vs Evan Tanner
Cabbage Correira Vs Sean Alvarez

The Preliminary fights on this card are fantastic and as with all the recent UFC dvd's available it has bags of extras including:
Weigh ins, Post fight celebrations, Fighter Bios, Interviews etc

All in all a good purchase with some great fights and a variety of finnishes, Submission, stopages, knockouts etc

I hope this helps with your purchase

4 out of 5 stars Most Underated TNA PPV.......2005-12-22

This PPV never gets the credit it deserves. All of the PPVs before this one had one or two show stealers. This one had 3 clear match of the year candidates. Here are the highlights of this great event:

Chris Sabin vs. Chase Stevens: This match was put on the show at the last minute, and was an amazing display of aerial moves. Sabin is amazing, and Stevens shines in singles action.

Jeff Hardy vs. Abyss: This match was labelled Final Assault. This is a Falls Count Anywhere match, and you won't believe the spots in this match. It was a great improvement on their match a month before.

Ultimate X Challenge- The Phenomenal AJ Styles vs. The Fallen Angel Christopher Daniels vs. Primetime Elix Skipper vs. Ron The Truth Killings: The perfect X Division match in my opinion. Match of the night, and obvious match of the year contender, and a VERY pleasing result.

Jeff Jarrett vs. DDP: This is easily Jarrett's best NWA World title defence to date. With no end of surprise appearances and interferences, and two guys with a score to settle, it's hard not to enjoy this match.

    Other matches include:
America's Most Wanted and 3 Live Kru vs. Team Canada
Raven vs. Dustin Rhodes in a Bullrope Match
Disciples Of Destruction vs. Phi Delta Slam
    Monty Brown vs. Trytan
Kevin Nash vs. The Outlaw in a First Blood match

Overall, this event is absolutely tremendous, and it is an honour for me to have this in my DVD collection. It also contains backstage footage of Jeff Hardy getting thumbtacks removed from his back. AWESOME!
