Amazon.co.uk Review

He's had some good performances in supporting parts, but Richard Pryor's major film roles, including Brewster's Millions, never managed to captured his comic brilliance the way his concert films did--proving that magic isn't something you can bottle. This 1985 film is no exception, even though it was directed by Walter Hill three years after he turned Eddie Murphy into a film star with 48 Hours. The seventh film reworking of a warhorse stage play, this film stars Pryor and John Candy as a pair of minor-league baseball players whose best days are behind them. Then Pryor is informed that he's just inherited a fortune--300 million dollars. But it comes with a condition: he must spend 30 million dollars in one month, with a number of rules about how much he can spend at one time and how many of any one thing he can buy. Both Pryor and Candy were at the top of their comedy games at this point, but were utterly failed both by ham-handed direction and a script that left them higher and drier than seems humanly possible, given the comic talents involved. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars 80s classic that you must have in your collection.......2005-10-30

Its what we have all thought of at one time or another, what to do with a serious vault load of cash. On a par with Stir Crazy you get the usual classic Richard Pryor and a reminder of what we lost with the death of John Candy so early in what would have been a lengthy career.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant comedy, one of my favourites........2005-01-26

This is a great comedy that never gets old, I remember watching it years ago when it first came out and it remains hilariously funny 20 years on.

The film brilliantly brings together Richard Pryor (Monty Brewster) and John Candy in a tale of riches, excessive spending and more riches!

Monty, the only descendant of an unknown millionaire great uncle, finds that he is to inherit the old mans estate, but there's a catch. In order to get $300 million he must spend $30 million in 30 days and have nothing to show for it except the clothes on his back, and he's not allowed to tell anyone the rules leading to hilarious repercussions.

The story involves Pryor spending as hard as he can with Candy trying to make a few bucks for his old baseball buddy, and the lawyers disposing of the will also trying to sabotage Montys efforts to reap the estate for themselves.

This is truly a classic film from the 80s that's a must have for anyone who loves comedy.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favourite Classics.......2004-07-28

Brewster (Richard Prior) has some good news he's inherited billions of dollars from a rich white uncle.
Bad News, he has to spend 100 Million without any assets.
Fantastic classic Richard Prior.

I don't want to tell you to much, just lets say it's fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Simply a classic.......2004-06-26

Spending 30 million USD on 30 days is not easy (I guess :cute: )... but this movie shows how funny it can be... it's just one of those movies you have to watch

5 out of 5 stars How would you spend $30,000,000 in a month?.......2002-01-12

So, how would you spend $30,000,000 in a month? Well that's what our star of this film, Monty Brewster (Richard Pryor) has gotta do. This film is one of those classic 80's films, like Ghostbusters and Karate Kid, that you just sit down to watch and get straight into it. With outstanding performances from Richard Pryor and John Candy (Uncle Buck), this film takes you on a rollercoster ride of Monty's life from minor league baseball right to the top of it all, but there's a catch. I can't tell you the catch, but I know your saying stuff like "I'll just buy a load of expensive stuff, like cars and clothes for myself and all my friends". If only it was that easy. This film is a must for your DVD collection, you'll want to watch again and again. Guarenteed!
