5 out of 5 stars A complete LFC education, YNWA.......2008-03-10

It's hard to fully appreciate a club if you don't know the full history the ups and the downs and the players who built the club into the 5 times winners they are today.

This Dvd has it covered, some amazing football with comments from past players and interviews. It has it all covered and is great value for money. The packaging is great and the main feature alone is 3 hours. You can pick an individual era or watch it all at once.

Some of the football is truly breathtaking and you can see the players of the 70's 80's could match the quality of Ronaldo or Gerard today.

An absolute must for any Liverpool fan. Enjoy

If you are a liverpool fan then this vid is a must... Diving!!! Yea right.
If we go down then its from undue pressure caused by you, the other team!!!!
Why? because you use every trick in the book cus your out classed.

3 out of 5 stars Possibly made of old carpet samples at the last minute, but great watching........2007-12-09

To be honest Mr Claringbold, you talk rubbish. If you're not a Liverpool fan, why take the time to comment on this product? Nothing better to do? Anyway, if you are a fan of the mighty Pool, this product will be appraciated greatly. It has all of the usual bits you would expect of a history, plus it brings it all up to date. I would agree that the new footage is a bit stilted, and yes, Rafa does talk nonsense, but generally this will keep you happy. And it has good re-run quality, and as long as you can take seeing Jimmy-with-a-D Traore fumbling around with the ball like a drunken baby, then you'll definitely want to watch this again. And possibly once more. But that would be it. This DVD is recommended by Liverpool fans, and not by Man United fans from Surrey.

3 out of 5 stars Good - but not great........2007-10-13

This dvd marks the latest "definitive" history of Liverpool - supposedly "fully revised and updated". In truth, the dvd is virtually the same as the 2002 release, only this time with Houllier's exit briefly touched upon, and around 30 minutes of Benitez's reign to date bolted on at the end. If you do not own the 2002 release, then this is a must, although frustratingly an opportunity to add some decent, "never seen before" extras has been missed. If you already own the 2002 release, then stick with that and invest in the subsequent season reviews instead. Overall, a good dvd - but it could have been so much more.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2007-04-07

This is absolutely essential viewing. If you love football this gives new depth and you will have renewed respect for the beautiful game. Knowing the history of this game is a must and this boxset is the easiest way to find that history.

4 out of 5 stars Absolute Belter.......2006-06-21

This is an excellent box set, but it is missing the episode that looks at Russian football, and tells the story of the 4 big Moscow teams, Dinamo, Lokomotiv, Spartak and CSKA. The same episode also tells the stories of great Russian playes like Lev Yashin and Eduoard Streltsov. This episode was shown on cable tv's UKTV Documentary along with all the other episodes in the series, but for some unknown reason is not in this box set. Still, it is a cracking watch, and i advise all true football fans to get it.

5 out of 5 stars Essential. And a bargain........2006-01-13

Can't recommend this box set highly enough. Each DVD (seven in total) is split into two 50-minute programmes. Topics for the programmes include European football, South American football, Brazil, the development of club and international football, the media, superstars, developing nations and the future. The series has high production values and features extensive, poignant footage and interviews with all-time greats such as Pele, Maradona, Best, Rinus Michels, Zidane, Zico, Rossi, Klinsmann, Shearer, Alex Ferguson, Ronaldo, Maldini, Charlton, Platini etc etc. The extras are superb, including highlights of every World Cup Final up to 1998 and several European Championship finals, as well as longer interviews with the greats. The series is comprehensive, well made, engaging, informative and respectful. If you love football and appreciate its past, buy this.

5 out of 5 stars 11 men kicking a ball around a field............2004-07-10

We have all heard this criticism of the beautiful game from those who refuse to appreciate the subtly of the skill and that decibel defying silence when the ball hits the net.

As a game football has ignored language barriers, geographical distance and political opposition & hindrance.

This 7 disc box set covers every possible moment of the games history - from being a spiritual past time in china to rules being drafted by English public schools via worldwide cultural revolution.

A perfect package which gives a better understanding to where the game has come from and acts as a platform for where it might evolve to in the future.

Everton Football Club - The Official History

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A Wasted Opportunity.......2007-12-30

Nearly twenty years after the VHS production of Everton's Official History was released, a brand spanking new DVD has been brought out in time for Christmas.

First the good bits: John Motson narrating; a wealth of footage, both vintage and contemporary, and a few gems I haven't seen before: the 1966 FA Cup Final in Technicolor, for example; and archive interviews with Harry Catterick. Historian, John Keith, and local journalist, Dave Prentice, give insightful and interesting perspectives.

Indeed, it's a wonder why these two were not asked to produce the film, for they clearly have the knowledge, talent and - above all- passion for the subject to make this a far better film. For I am sad to report that this DVD is a lackluster effort; worth watching once, but not really meriting a second viewing, or the ludicrously inflated cover price.

This really is a wasted effort. Besides the interviews with Keith and Prentice and one or two others, there is a definite sense that this is the original VHS offering (from 1988) with an extra half hour taped onto the end. The makers have not been out and about with their cameras updating old interviews and making new ones. For instance, the interview with a very youthful Dave Hickson from the VHS is included as if it were new materiel. Could not the makers have gone down to Goodison one morning (where Hickson still works) and taken twenty minutes to get some new footage and thoughts? Colin Harvey is interviewed at Bellefield in improbably skimpy shorts, presumably when he was still manager in the late 1980s. Lazy, lazy, lazy.

Even the `new' interviews are slipshod and second rate. Many seem to have been taken at a Gwladys Street Hall of Fame dinner hosted five or six years ago. Who by isn't quite clear. Presumably not originally for the purposes of this work. Graham Stuart is asked about his famous efforts against Wimbledon, in between servings at prematch hospitality at Goodison, with a racket going on behind him. It all gives an impression of cheapness and laziness from the DVD's makers.

Those that have previously purchased Everton's end of season reviews, which are produced by the same company, will probably be well aware of some of ILC Media's shoddy production values (a few years ago, one such DVD even managed to omit an ENTIRE month). Indeed this DVD has the feel of something that was put together by a sixth form media studies student using Window's Movie Maker. There's an amateurish feel to the editing throughout. For example, towards the end of the film it mentions the sad, early death of Alan Ball; then it cuts to interview footage of Ball in his living room, as if he has come back from the dead. There are errors too, minor admittedly, but telling of the general lack of thought that has gone into this piece. For example, Mikel Arteta, did not join Everton on loan from Glasgow Rangers - that was Duncan Ferguson, more than a decade previous. Shabby graphics, of the sort you might see on a souped up home movie also predominate. And by the time you hear the fifteenth playing of Billy Maher's `It's a Grand Old Team to Play For...' strike up, you really do feel like kicking the TV in.

All in all, this film is a profound disappointment. In its way, it's the best there is available on DVD about Everton, in terms of its depth in content; but that isn't to say it's anything special and is more an indictment of the paucity of quality available elsewhere. Judged by its own standards it is a lazy work, sloppily produced, and irritatingly passionless. Certainly it does not live up to the mantra set by the club's famous motto: Nil Satis Nisi Optimum; Nothing But the Best Is Good Enough.

    Amazon.co.uk Review

Manchester United Football Club started life as Newton Heath, a team founded by workers from the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway in 1878. This is where this program starts, recounting the history of Manchester United. Honors soon followed and the first of seven First Division titles was won in 1908. With an FA Cup win the following year, and another league title two years later, Manchester United were firmly establishing themselves as a force in English football. The era of great success and tragedy under the inspirational management of Sir Matt Busby and the Busby Babes. Charlton, Best and Law won the European Cup. Sir Alex Ferguson built the team of the nineties that have gone on to win seven premiership titles over the last ten years. Built around home-grown talent and inspirational signings (such as Eric Cantona), Manchester United moved into an era of unrivalled success which culminated in the remarkable treble of 1999. But Manchester United's history does not stop there. Further championships followed in both 2000 and 2001 and this program finishes at a time when Ferguson, through the signings of Ruud van Nistelrooy, Juan Sebastian Veron and Rio Ferdinand is building another team worthy of success at home and in Europe.

4 out of 5 stars GREATEST TEAM OF THE WORLD.......2004-07-05

ý think this dvb is superb. the plot, the narration is very good. there were no boring parts. because of less or no soccer shots been available . the first years have been told by the help of graphs, pictures and newspaper cut offs
after 1950's we have seen many good footages of m.united's domestic and european games especially two great benfica games, real madrid games.

after 1970's by the help of colour images we have a better a guality images.. in this dvd you can see more action and even in some intereviews we don't see who is talking instead we see goalssss.
this dvd has some great special features. especially ý admire THE BEST 3 GOALS (becksy and giggsy goals...unforgetable), THE BEST 3 PLAYERS the best players is george best), THE BEST 3 GAMES. (1999 juve game 0-2...3-2, who forgets the last 3 minutes in nou camp) plus a chapter about how m.united youth policy works well. everybody has to know that the best sub structure facilities done in europe

the dvd has 9 chapters. the first three of them are the early years o club, tforth and fiþfth one is abou munich tagedy and 1968 european cup descibed as TRAGEDY TO SUCEESS the other chapters are 70 s, ron atkinson period, emerging of alex ferguson and his incredible commitment to club, title back to m.united after 26 years, great 1999 treble

at last ý will make complaint. during chapters 5-6-7-8 we see many grat mathes and goals but we don't see any subtitles about which game is it when it played what is its category

it have to be like this

    ex: m.united-a.villa 26-02-1997 league game

but this dvd is the best one ý have watched . if you are big fan of manchester united. ý recommend you "the pride of europe"

3 out of 5 stars Very badly written and narrated.......2002-04-26

I cannot believe that EUFA would sanction such a badly produced representation of their biggest competition. The person reading the script sounds English, but unless he has been forced to read the words at gunpoint I cannot see any other excuse for the atrocious mistakes which he sprinkles liberally throughout this presentation.
Kevin Dalglish? He actually calls Liverpool's finest player KEVIN?? Manchester United become simply 'Manchester,' indicating they must be the only team from that city, although Kevin Keegan might have a problem with that; Partisan Belgrade become Belgrade Partisan; a player scores from a direct free kick 20 yards outside the penalty area and the narrator calls it a 'well struck penalty'; he refers to all teams as 'it' rather than 'they' (i.e. after Real Madrid's success 'it' ruled Europe for ten years). I could go on but you get the picture. The writer(s) should be...
What makes me sad is that all those dedicated football writers at FourFourTwo or When Saturday Comes could have written a wonderful, accurate depiction of Europe's greatest competition, and Martin Tyler or even a good actor like John Hurt or somebody COULD HAVE READ IT PROPERLY!! ...I hate sloppy work...
I gave it 3 stars for the images alone, zero stars for everything else.

4 out of 5 stars a good dvd, full of history, action and great goals.......2001-07-03

this is a good dvd and if you are a footie fan like me then you will apreciate this to the full. the only critsim i have is that at times it is a bit thin on football action and footage but still a great football dvd!

1 out of 5 stars Worst DVD Ever.......2005-07-29

It's hard to impart how bad this DVD is. For a start, it looks like it was made by some Middle School film student using 80s video game music and graphics. Considering it's a World Cup DVD, it's ridiculous that the drab, uninspiring narrative is often accompanied by footage of the English Premiership. There is no coverage of the 98 World Cup, just a brief narration of what happened, and very little of the 94 World Cup. In fact they only show the final and spend ages yapping on about the cities and the mascots and other miscellaneous drivel. The best example of all as to why this is the worst DVD in history is that famous England v Argentina match from the 86 World Cup. Maradona's goal (the one where he dribbles from the halfway line) receives about two seconds of coverage, while Lineker's headed goal gets three replays. Shocking. Do not get this DVD.

2 out of 5 stars Poor quality and laughable in places.......2005-04-05

This 1 hr DVD goes through all the world cups until abruptly stopping before the 2002 one (Why? It was made in 2004!) however some world cups have only a few seconds footage of the final, and some, like USA '94 have disproportionately large amounts of time and detail on peripheral things like US stadiums, mascots and cities, plus Pele's career in the US football league.

The introduction screen to each new world cup features a cheap-looking screen with what looks like an Milan player, with laughable bad-arcade-game music. To make things worse, in between shots of world cup footage there are at least 2 random sequences of Dennis Bergkamp scoring and celebrating for Arsenal!

For the more recent world cups, there are highlights of the main games with memorable upsets/players highlighted. Overall, despite the low quality you can learn something from this DVD and if you really love football it's still - but only just - worth watching.

        3 out of 5 stars Okay.......2007-08-07

I can see what both other reviewers are saying. A bit budget in feel and not a comprehensive history, but a good DVD none the less.

        1 out of 5 stars Rubbish.......2007-07-10

No original commentary, hardly any coverage of any matches overseas including all world cups and euro championships. Half of the story and coverage is of meaningless games at Wembley, maybe copyright would not let the creators of this junk show anything outside of the twin towers, and yet there are respected contributions by "legends". I wonder if any of them saw the final product.
If this is the best we can do after a 135 years then we should all give up our day jobs and put together football films as this is complete rubbish.

        5 out of 5 stars A collection standard.......2006-05-25

For an overall history of England's international history you can't begin better than "The Three Lions Roared." You'll see interviews with veterans of the side from over the decades, talking about the ups and downs. Geoff Hurst and Sir Bobby Moore recall the Triumph of '66 with a certain level-headed modesty you just don't see in athletes today.

One interesting omission is in Billy Wright's and Sir Walter Winterbottom's recalling England's miserable performance in their first World Cup play in 1950, losing to a Side-That-Must-Not-Be-Named (hint: it wasn't Scotland.)
