3 out of 5 stars I have a story for you if you want to hear it!.......2007-11-16

Not strictly horror nor is it gory but it does have a creep factor which is still good being that this was made for younger teenagers. Whats not to love you have the first story which is written by Stephen King then the last one by Clive Barker, directed by Mick Garris and cameos to boot. I did like this even if it wasnt gore by the bucket.

    Amazon.co.uk Review

Based on a true story, Rabbit-proof Fence moves with dignified grace from its joyful opening scenes to a conclusion that's moving beyond words. The title refers to a 1,500-mile fence separating outback desert from the farmlands of Western Australia. It's here, in 1931, that three aboriginal girls are separated from their mothers and transported to a distant training school, where they are prepared for assimilation into white society by a racist government policy. Gracie, Daisy, and Molly belong to Australia's "stolen generations", and this riveting film (based on the book by Molly's daughter, Doris Pilkington Garimara) follows their escape and tenacious journey homeward, while a stubborn policy enforcer (Kenneth Branagh) demands their recapture.

Director Phillip Noyce chronicles their ordeal with gentle compassion, guiding his untrained, aboriginal child actors with a keen eye for meaningful expressions. Their performances evoke powerful emotions (subtly enhanced by Peter Gabriel's excellent score), illuminating a shameful chapter of Australian history while conveying our universal need for a true and proper home. --Jeff Shannon

    2 out of 5 stars expected better.......2008-02-27

after having watched the new Australian PM say "sorry" to Native Australians juxtaposed with a new (white) Australian saying "sorry?they should be thanking us for giving them schools and education etc" I rented this with the expectation of obtaining an understanding of the policies employed and the emotions involved from 'real' australians. I can only echo a previous comment that this falls a bit flat and seems a bit of a'cop out'. i can understand viewers empathy but there was not, for me, the huge emotional involvement in the characters that I expected. All in all a disappointment although i'm sure there is a fantastic film in these stories if someone has the time to portray this abhorrent reality properly. By the way,in my (limited)experience the attitude of the white australian quoted appears to still be the prevalent attitude in the australia of today.....

4 out of 5 stars life is unfair.......2008-02-22

I loved this film. Is very sad and touching. And it's feels more strong because is a real life story. And unfortunately still happening in some 3rd world countries. Life is so unfair!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring True Story.......2007-10-06

Between 1905 and 1971 the Australian government had enacted a policy of forcibly removed all half-caste Aboriginal children to special training schools. The grown daughter of Molly wrote a book about her mother's experiences and this movie is an adaptation of that true story.

In 1931, Molly and her younger cousins, Gracie and Daisy, were three half-caste children from Western Australia who were taken from their parents under government edict and sent to an institution, were taught to forget their families, their culture, and re-invent themselves as members of "white" Australian society. The three girls begin an epic journey back to Western Australia, traveling 1,500 miles on foot with no food or water, and navigating by following the fence that has been build across the nation to stem an over-population of rabbits.

Though the movie shows that the government's officer in charge had essentially good intentions. That these actions brought about by this policy were misguided and ultimately very destructive to Australia's Aborigine people and to the nation's moral fabric. This story of hope and survival will give you faith in the undying strength of the human spirit. Well worth watching.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing. A big let down.......2007-09-26

I'm sorry. I know that this is a very 'worthy' subject and is certainly part of a dreadful piece of recent Australian social history (the last case occuring in 1970), but i found this film tedious, lacking emotion - and given the subject matter that was very surprising - lacking any kind of punch & extremely disjointed.
Sometimes we fall for these social commentary type films, but you know what? - they're not all good.
Kenneth Branagh was just incredibly ineffectual. The whole film seemed to be shying away from probably upsetting the population & just didn't do enough to hit home the sheer audacity & arrogance of this policy.
I really really wanted to like this film as it seemed to promise all of the qualities that i love in good, low-key, social markers. However, i was let down on almost every level by a limp, vapid & , well, just plain uninteresting film.
SHOULD and COULD have been so very much better. I was doubly interested as i used to live in the pilbara area in which the film was partly shot, but just felt so very unaffected by the end.
A saving grace? hard to think of one really, but the appearance of the real women at the end was at least reasonably interesting.

    5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2007-08-16

Unfortunately it was a true story, but I loved it. Molly was a very strong person.

I bought this film as i am a great fan of the film clerks and this is the only other film i could find that had Brian O'Halloran in it. There are other close links with Jay and silent Bob as both smith and mewes are in the film. I can safely say that this is NOT another jay & bob film. Neither does it try to be one. This is a very intense film.
I had seen the trailor befor actually watching the film, and the film surprised me when i eventually saw it, it is really disturbing at points.

Basically Brian O'Halloran is a failing clown who decides that clowns arent just for kids. One day something goes horibly wrong on the job, i wont say what but its disturbing. Then some time later he becomes a hero by saving a young girls life. Then his past comes back to haunt him.
I really was a very good film, but i believe that it shall never come out in the uk, so the only way to get hold of it is to get the R1 version.

Rosetta Stone (Tilda Swinton), bio-geneticist creates three artificial sweeties, Ruby/Marinne/Olivia (Tilda Swinton), each with her own color coordinated environment. She uses her own DNA and hopes to have created something better than people. They soon gain their own personalities. By sneaking into the outside world, they eventually teach Rosetta how to live in the real world.

This has the feel of an independent low budget film. There is no correlation to reality; so real techies would barf. But other than that this is an interesting story and lots of color and sound. The science is appalling and amusing. The lust part of "Teknolust" is so mild that you need to look closely. About the time you get used to it the 85 minutes are over.

    4 out of 5 stars TIME CHANGER - A Rich Christiano film.......2007-09-08

Here we have what I call one of those 'nice' relaxing and enjoyable movies; it doesn't get you on the edge of your seat but it most certainly gets you thinking about many of the issues the film raises regarding the moral and social course that our world seems to be taking. There is a 'hidden' embedded religious influence in the film; David Morin plays his role very well and succeeds in getting the viewer to examine his or her moral lifestyle and, possibly, encouraging us to get out our dusty old bibles. I couldn't also help thinking during the watching of the film, if some religious 'organisation' has had an input on the written theme; I believe there once was a bible scholar named Russell at the turn of the 19th century who was the founder of a rather well known organisation still around today (if I said: remember that David Soul song of the seventies? that might give you a clue). Even if you are not a bible scholar or indeed a believer, I would still recommend watching this film as the scripture quotations are quoted at a minimum and, if you are into time travel films I would buy it; I was particularly interested in those relating scenes to see whether or not they had a 'H.G Wellsian' influence. For the low cost of this title it was worth it; not a film I would've watched in the cinema, it doesn't have a high modern day social appeal. Enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2005-09-22

I found this movie to be very enjoyable. It raised the moral issue into which are western secular society is heading towards-trying to have a morality without a "morality-maker", in other words if God is ejected out of the picture then morals become what one person preferences over another and thus the resulting consequences of this.

Oh and i have one thing to say to the person who wrote the one star review (ihateallnicknames) who is really being the narrow minded one the Christian or you who was obviously bias form the beginning?

    1 out of 5 stars Hilariously bad.......2005-02-17

Oh dear oh dear... just how bad can one movie be?

As a non-christian I suppose I was always going to be at a disadvantage in watching this little piece. I really tried to give it a chance - I'm eternally curious as to the christian mindset, and I looked at this as a chance to see how they see the world.

All I can say is, if there are people who think like THIS, then those people need to wake up a bit.

The basic message of Time Changer is that moral authority stems only from God/Jesus, and that any attempt to be moral without God is doomed to failure. To preach this - and the film IS preaching - we are treated to a succession of characters who do various sinful things such as stealing, consuming alcohol, etc. All of them do it with a kind of wide-eyed innocence; they have a vague idea that what they are doing is somehow not quite right, but no real conception that there might be rules about it. Indeed, the movie actually slaps us in the face with this a few times with dialogue along the lines of "well there's nobody who says not to get drunk is there?" "Well, I guess not..." - at which point the audience is presumably meant to be shouting excitedly "Yes there is! It's Jesus! Jesus says so!"

Implicit in this is an idea which this type of religion seems soaked with - people are atheistic or agnostic not as a result of any kind of conscious choice, but because they haven't ever heard of god and/or know virtually nothing about the bible. I can tell you from personal experience of dozens if not hundreds of atheists that this is simply not so in most cases. Trying to preach bible verses at most atheists will result in their citing contradictory verses right back at you rather than the "really? You mean Jesus died for ME!?" reaction you see in this movie.

Most worryingly, the movie repeats one or two common falsehoods - most notably, it states the blatant lie that prayer has been banned from public schools in the USA. This is simply not the case; what has been banned is school ENDORSEMENT of prayer, a distinction of vital importance which this movie is apparently oblivious to.

I could go on - I've not touched on the generally bad acting, gaping plot holes (a cop takes to following our hero around and investigating him. Why? Who knows, the movie doesn't bother to tell us) and such. But really, any review of this movie could be summed up as - don't watch it!

    5 out of 5 stars Time Changer.......2004-01-16

I really enjoyed this film which portrays the things that we Christians are doing taking the church as a place for social entertainment not a place where spiritual fulfilment is found. When he visited the future I felt like it was our church he had come to.Hope you will make more like this.

5 out of 5 stars This film is simply hilarious!!!.......2008-03-03

I love this film. My husband and I watched it quite by accident on the telly and I simply had to buy it. As an avid reader of historical novels set in this era it was comical for me to differentiate between how a modern citizen would converse on a daily basis compared to someone in the 1400 century. I could not disagree more with other reviewers who lack a sense of humour..... if you don't laugh at this then, quite frankly, you are already dead! Buy it and be prepared to laugh your socks off.

5 out of 5 stars True comedy film.......2006-01-18

I have to totally disagree with 2 of the reviewers. This is a hilarious movie with non stop laughing! If you want to have a great laugh then get it! One of the best Martin Lawrence movie I have seen!

    1 out of 5 stars Black Knight.......2005-09-28

When you're making a out and out comedy, especially one that has such a silly premise as "Black Knight" then you'd better make sure that the film is funny. And unfortunately this is the problem with "Black Knight", it's just not funny.

Martin Lawrence plays Jamal Walker, a medieval theme park worker who during his daily tasks falls into the moat surrounding the fake castle. Amazingly he is transported back to 14th century Britain and finds himself part and parcel of the everyday life of the castle there.

Really there's not any point explaining anymore about the plot, there's some bits concerning a rival theme park, an usurped Queen and a beautiful lady in waiting, but really it's the absolutely "hilarious" fact that here is a 21st century, hip and cool black man in the filth and dirt of middle age Britain. But alas, as I say, there are just no jokes that are actually funny enough to carry the plot. Lawrence does try hard, but after we've seen him "jive talk" once seeing him doing it for the 73rd time doesn't make it any funnier.

I like Martin Lawrence, it's always fresh to see him as an alternative to the major stars, and in such films as Blue Streak or Nothing to Loose he was great, but this is just awful.

4 out of 5 stars A Knight to be reckoned with.......2005-03-08

Having read the on-line comments, I felt I had to write and disagree with the reviewer. The only thing I did agree with, was the acting of Martin Lawrence. I found this film to be entertaining, mainly because IT IS SILLY! One man's struggle to come to terms with the fact that he'd travelled back in time was quite amusing! teaching the king's court a "futuristic" song and dance and then teaching a band of "low-life" villagers the "fighting" tactics of American football (Grid-iron) had me laughing out loud.

2 out of 5 stars A black day for all comedies.......2004-01-29

'Black Knight' is a dire comedy with very few entertaining elements. The only redeeming feature is the performance of Martin Lawrence who doesn't let the fact he is in a poor film damage his acting ability. The main problem with this film is that the plot is unrealistic to the point of utter stupidity. The king, evil knight and princess are such shallow characters that you cannot even begin to relate to them or find them amusing. Add to this an incredibly dull script and very few interesting jokes and you will begin to have some idea of the quality of this film.

The basic story is that of a man going back in time and 'saving the land' from an evil king and learning honour and righteousness while he's at it, (and of course he falls in love along the way). This tedious tale is occasionally interrupted by a moment of hilarity (far too few and far between) before retuning to the same painful disgrace. The only thing that saves this from being a one star film is Martin Lawrence who never fails to lift the overall standard of any film.

In conclusion, to buy this film would be a crime against any other DVD in you're collection and I would strongly advise against it.

Never have i felt so glued to the tv whilst watching a film.

This film is bound to take you through emotions that you may have never felt in your life so be prepared!

I so felt for this little girl and was sat on the edge of my seat waiting for whatever was to happen next.

It's amazing how somebody can go through so much and come out the other end. Watching this film i felt as if i was part of it and i just wanted to pick up the little girl and give her a big hug.

With so many plots, good and bad, this film just got better. Although not the ending i expected, it was still an excellent film, as true stories always are.

    You MUST watch this film.

It will give you an insight on what actually happens in some peoples lifes and what they have to deal and cope with.

Katie is a strong and wonderful child who grew into a beautiful young lady with the help of the people around her.

I deffinately give this film 5 out of 5

4 out of 5 stars wild child or not?.......2004-04-26

After stuying the true story of Katie* in A level English I watched thismovie just to see how close it stuck to the truth. The truth is I found itwas immensly detailed and heart warming, The actors fullfilled the rolesrequired of them.
Almost from birth Katie* was locked in a room byherself with only a bed and a potty chair, her father would 'take care ofher' as her mother was mostly blind. He would force feed her and bark ather like a dog if she misbehaved.
When police found Katie* she was 13 years old and unable to talk. It wasthrough the patience and skill of a young linguist that Katie* was able tolearn the basics of language though she could never fully communicate withthe outside world.
This movie really is one to watch, it makes youappreciate the things you have in life and the heartache of others.

    4 out of 5 stars A gruelling true story.......2004-02-17

This is the sort of material that, starring bigger names (and better actors), might even have gone for an Oscar. It is the incredible story of Katie, a 13-year-old, locked up her whole life by her insane father to the effect that, when she re-emerged to the world, she did not possess the most elementary cultural skills, including speech. The story documents the struggle of (and the competition among) scientists to break Katie's silence, a struggle that ran against time itself as Katie was about to surpass the so-called "critical period" (according to a hypothesis, children who have not mastered language by the time they hit puberty never will do). It is a story of love, hatred and lurid professional rivalry, all with one single focus and one little victim: Katie.
The film is imperfectly acted and the scenario leaves a lot of questions hanging in the balance (perhaps intentionally). The direction conveys a documentary-like sense of the events that works well on screen and minimises sentimentalism. All in all, this is interesting stuff.

4 out of 5 stars Edgy, quirky and funny.......2007-09-21

Firstly, I'm a James Murray fan, so I was already pre-disposed to like this film, just because of who was in it. As it turned out, I enjoyed the film on its own merits and because James Murray was in it 90% of the time.

The entire film/story is viewed through the lens of a handheld video camera alternatively used by one or other of three friends as they attempt to put together a money making film to cash in on the recent interest in UK Gangsta drama's.

The technique used means the images are often skewed and off kilter depending on who's holding the camera, and it often looks little better than your average home movie. But there's a fair bit of black humour and you can't help laughing at some of the antics the three no-hopers get up to in their quest to Nail Vienna and get the film finished.

Several lovely cameo's by vintage heavies, and a gritty realism give the film a very watchable quality, and a neat twist to this film-within-a-film at the end makes you gasp (well I got me, anyway).

I enjoyed Nailing Vienna because James Murray gets plenty of film time - and because it keeps you watching to see what idiotic things these three will get up to next.
