5 out of 5 stars GREAT FAMILY FILM!! WOULD RECOMMEND!.......2007-05-29

these are funny, touching in places stories from James Herriots books.
I think they are really good adaptions of his books, they were made in the 70's, but dont let that put you off because they are really well made,
In this series, James asks Helen to marry him, she agrees!!! They get married, go on honeymoon of testing cows for dieases!!!
Tristain goes for exams, and again....he has to face wrath of his brother Siegfried as he's failed!!!
In total there are 7epsiodes on the dvds. Three dvd's.
Its great for just curling up on a cold rainy day (Like Bank Holiday monday!!) and watching,
WOULD RECOMMEND, GREAT FAMILY FILM!

5 out of 5 stars laugh-out-loud funny, perfect for cold winter evenings.......2004-10-05

Although this series was originally made in the 1970s, it stands up very well. The quality of the acting is very high in all the episodes and the cast appear to be having a genuinely good time. Robert Hardy is wonderful as the impossible but difficult to dislike Siegfried, Peter Davison is perfect as his mischevous younger brother, Tristan, and Christopher Timothy is excellent as the fresh-faced James Herriot trying to get to grips with life as a newly-qualified vet in the 1930s. The supporting cast, especially Mrs Hall, are all excellent and the series paints a convincing (if a little rose-tinted) picture of 1930s Yorkshire. All the anecdotes from the books are there and are still as hilarious as when I first read them. There are even a few moving moments. Highly recommended to cheer up long winter evenings.

5 out of 5 stars Great Film!!!.......2007-05-08

I've enjoyed reading the James Herriot Books, so to know that there was dvd's based on the story was great!!
You know how some films that are made based on books, you watch and you have not a clue how they came to base it on that particular book as its not true to it? Well these Dvd's are different, because they are very true to the books, i'm happy to see that!
In this first series, James comes to the town of Darrowby as a fresh Vet from COllage. It takes time for him to get used to the unusal ways of the farmers, the cases he has to work on are shown in the film, also the scraps of Trickiewoo! and he even finds something quite special in a miss Alderson. Christopher Timothy and Robert Hardy are well suited for the parts of James and Siegfried. Its an enjoyable film, suitable to watch with the family too!

5 out of 5 stars All Time Classic.......2005-10-15

Based on the books of James Herriot, this is series one of the classic TV adaption. The series tells the story of newly qualified Scottish vet Herriot (Christopher Timothy) travelling to Yorkshire, to secure a job of assistant vet to Seigfried Farnhan (Robert Hardy) This first series tells how James gets the job, his first tentative steps in the practice, his courtship, and subsequent marriage to local girl Helen Alderton (Carol Drinkwater) and his first meeting with the youthful and philandering Brother of Siegfried, Tristan (Peter Davison)

Also in series one, this disc set being the first of two parts, Sigfrieds exasperation over his Brothers failiure to qualify, his hilarious attempts to organise the practise by employing a secretary, the dragon like Winnifrid Harbottle!

The story of the vets unfolds against the impending world war two, often bringing into play nostalgic elements, like listening to Lamplight the wireless in the sitting room, cosy fireside chats, and mealtime cnversations, making the audience often appreciate the joy of home cooking, and the companionship of good friends and family.

James dedication to his work is at times, in the opinion of his partners, bordering on the obsessive... Also shining through is his innate caring attitude towards the community he has grown to love. But it is the towering performence of Robert Hardy as Siegfried, and his psychological battles with his Brother Tristan, which went a long way to making this series the gem that is is.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage - seems to have improved with age........2005-05-17

Don't know what the viewing figures were when this came out in the seventies but it seemed at the time that everyone was watching it. Could recall the programme contained shots of beautiful Yorkshire countryside but as an adult I am enjoying it all the more, it is just such fun to watch, plenty of humour, rich characterisations and wonderful acting. Robert Hardy's portrayal of Siegfried is electric - he positively sparkles with energy.

Very suitable for family viewing. The PG rating must be for the operating scenes and for the occasional bit of bad language but there is nothing crude or rude about this series, and no F words! Hoorah. Some of today's producers need to put this on and learn.

Has default subtitles which can be switched off. We have bought up to the end of the second series, beyond that not sure if the series has been committed to DVD yet but even if that is all you can get in the UK, it is worth it. We hope that the third series will appear on DVD soon.

5 out of 5 stars all creatures great and small.......2003-11-16

Excellent. A wonderful series from 1978 to 1990 one of the BBC'S best productions. Recreates life in Yorkshire as a vet before the second world war. The charectors are great and who can forget the irribpressable Mrs Pumphrey and her beloved Tricky woo
with cracker dog and flot bot.
If you ever get the chance to see the James Herriot museum in Thirsk it will bring back lots of hapiness to anyone who enjoyed the programme.
