5 out of 5 stars the dragon rules.......2007-04-09

Although I do vaguely remember this being shown on television I was quite young at the time and I couldn't really remember much about it so I was pleasantly surprised by the content. Real vintage comedy with old fashioned values, no swearing, sex or violence. Starring Peggy Mount as Miss Gabrielle Dragon and Sid James as George, an unlikely relationship ensues as Gabrielle goes to work as an housekeeper for the colonel (John Le Mesurier) where George works as his chauffeur, cue lots of comic situations. Miss Dragon is the last in a long line of housekeepers as George has driven them all away with his lustful intent. Miss Dragon is more than a match for George and although not a conventional beauty George developes a secret admiration for her though he would be loathe to admit it.

5 out of 5 stars Network Rule!!.......2006-04-14

George and the Dragon was originally released about 17 years before I was born, but when I saw the pre-release information for it I couldn't believe it! Network DVD are in a period of mass old-sitcom release that (although frequent) is of the highest Quality.

There are no special features with this set, but it is a wonderful item on four discs, each disc containing one season of the show. Sid James and Peggy Mount are fantastically cast as the warring chauffeur and housekeeper of Colonel Maynard (played by the ever-brilliant John Le-Mesurier) and have great chemistry. It is clear that this show was written for Sid but Peggy really pushes him to be the headline here.

Great story-lines across all four series make it easy to see why the show was (and is) so popular, but one of the best things about this DVD is that Network have not removed the ad-caps, so it is like watching it back in the good old days... The only slight disappointment here is the quality of the material that was transfered (it was clearly slightly worn) but this does provide the Nostalgia element and is in no way worthy of a lost star.

Buy this, it is brilliant, and while you're at it treat yourself to some other great Network DVDs such as On The Buses series 1,2,3,4 and Bless This House series 1,2,3.

5 out of 5 stars There's still fire in this dragon.......2006-03-31

Mid 60s sit com that stands the test of time. Excellent scipts and cracking pace. Sid James and Peggy Mount are on top form supported by John le Mesurier in his best vague mode and Keith Marsh as gardiner Ralph (or Rafe as Miss Dragon calls him). The audience lap it up, so much so that their laughter covers some good gags in the filmed sequences. Perhaps the highlight of the first series is the episode 'Night night sleep tight', virtually a two hander for James and Mount. And a catchy theme tune from Tom Springfield.

5 out of 5 stars excellent funny nostalgic bit of telly.......2006-03-30

it was great to watch all of the series which without amazons help we couldn't of seen, sid and his hilarious guffaws and the timing and sense of old fashioned but hilarious situations just make this excellent family viewing peggy mount is supreme and the colonel always pottering about and forgetting things, then you have the gardener who has a delicate charm all to himself, you must watch this it is british sitcom at it's best and thanks to dvd will not be forgotten, just rent one and you will get hooked.!!

5 out of 5 stars Still brilliant.......2006-02-06

After 40 years, George and the Dragon has lost none of its charm; Sid James and Peggy Mount are timeless and the scripting is so much better than the bulk of modern TV comedies, especially the US ones. One can see the influence of classics like George and the Dragon on the better contemporary TV sitcoms. This series is worth every penny.

4 out of 5 stars Great but er.....pointless.......2004-08-02

This is the first episode of the The Guver series. Its approx 25 minutes long and despite it being relly cool its pointless. Why? i hear you ask! Ill tell you why! Cos you can get episodes 1-4 on a single video for the same price as this single one! So unless you are a fruit cake and want each one induvidually (like me) get the video with episodes 1-4 on it. Anyway this is classic stuff never the less. I especially like the bit where the two monsters are fighting and one calls the other one a "S*1t" Ha!! Take that you inferior monster bloke!! Quality!

4 out of 5 stars Mutronics the beginning.......2003-07-13

If your a die hard fan then this movie is for you. As happens with most main stream films numbers of poeple have seen Guyver "The Dark Hero" but very few have even heard of "Mutronics", which is a shame as the movie answers a lot questions left open in GTDH. The action sequences in Mutronics may not be up to the fast paced fights in GTDH but they are well correographed and put together. I would reccomend this film to anyone who has seen GTDH or the Manga equivelant as it is a great insight into the whole Guyver series.

5 out of 5 stars What a great introduction!.......2003-04-20

Sho a high school student unwittingly stumbles across one of the stolen Guyver units with his best friend, and accidentally activates it thus transforming him into a biological weapon.

4 out of 5 stars Anime at it's best............2003-04-02

When the Chronos corporation uncover three Guyver units in an archaeological dig, they believe their campaign to tighten their already iron grip on the world is complete. However one of their rogue operatives steals the units and inadvertently loses them. High school student Sho Fukamachi finds one of the units and accidentally activates it causing him to be blessed with near indestructible armour and powers beyond his wildest dreams. But the blessing soon becomes a curse for Sho and the people close to him as Chronos stop at nothing to recover their lost treasure.

Based on the Manga by Yoshiki Takaya, "Genesis of the Guyver" is the first of a twelve volume release from Manga Entertainment. The Guyver was based on a comic strip which was published in Tokuma Publishing's Shonen Captain magazine and it became an instant hit among fans of the magazine. The rights to produce the animated series were quickly snapped up by the massive Bandai toy company and there then followed the Japanese release of "Guyver - Out of Control", a 55 minute OAV based loosely on the comic books. The success of this OAV lead to the production of two series of Guyver videos which adhered to Takaya's original vision more closely.

"The Guyver" is one of the most underrated anime series in existence. It follows a young man's struggle to come to terms with the power he has been given and charts his plight to protect the people he loves from an evil corporation who are above the law. I rate this series on a par with legendary titles such as "Neon Genesis Evangelion" and the Macross saga. The voice acting, as is par for the course in dubbed anime movies, is nothing short of dire and the animation isn't exactly "Akira" but it's the story and the characterisation which make the series what it is.

3 out of 5 stars Bio boosting good.......2000-11-11

Data 1 shows the begginings of Yoshiki takayas dark saga. The animation isn't Akira but it is passable. What you'll stay for here is the story. Maybe a bit slow to get off with but when the Guyver first appears you'll be hooked. This episode is vital to the series as it shows the main characters as they go about their day to day lives before they discover whats really going on behind the scenes. It also gives a footing on the changes that Sho must go through before he eventually accepts his destiny as the Guyver.

5 out of 5 stars george and the dragon.......2007-12-01

this is a good easy watching dvd great for the family James Pureroy is excellent in his part as George its fun light hearted entertainment,
especially it you like knights :-)

3 out of 5 stars Braincandy movie.......2007-10-03

This is a movie for late some night when nothing else is on. A Princess who is just a bit too modern, a knight who really hams it up, pseudo medieval England, a dragon, plus egg and a host of Character actors hamming it up in beautiful surroundings - for all this is scores well. However hammy acting, thin plot and some really corny moments lose it points, still if you want something to pass a rainy afternoon, this is a lighthearted romp. Full of slapstick and characters being quite human.

Don't miss the end credits when, among other hilarious moments, the knight is upstaged in a love scene by a defecating horse.

3 out of 5 stars Too much George, too little dragon.......2007-03-13

The barely-even-released George and the Dragon is better than its troubled post-production history implies, but despite being considerably more competent the best that can really be said of it is that it's harmless. Aside from some miscasting and weak performances - take a bow Michael Clarke Duncan, Joan `Pantomime Dame' Plowright and a WTF-are-you-doing-here Patrick Swayze looking like Medieval Texas trailer trash - the biggest problem is that there's too much George, too little dragon. James Purefoy's pleasant enough in a Pierce Brosnan TV-movie sort of way, but there's a notable lack of dragon slaying (he spends most of the time protecting an unhatched dragon's egg) and far too many ideas borrowed from other films, not least Val Kilmer's unbilled cameo as the Dread Pirate Roberts - sorry, El Cabillo - sporting another of his collection of bad Irish accents. The highlight is a horse defecating continually through a love scene in the end credits out-takes.

The German DVD offers a good 2.35:1 widescreen transfer with optional English soundtrack, trailer, brief interview with director Tom reeve and behind the scenes footage.

5 out of 5 stars Hillariously Hammy.......2007-11-22

Some people just don't like ham, and with most films Ham can make a film worse. Here however it was deliberate and just adds to the humour. Basicaly it has a dragon egg that needs to be saved, a willfull princess, a roaming band of pirates, and a knight who wants nothing more than an acre of land and a head of cattle. It's your basic family comedy, however one person dies in the film.

The reasoning behind this was for plot endings to all tie up nicely. The character was no longer required story line wise. A bit of an oversight realy. Alittle more tweaking of which characters could tell the story best was required. However I did like this movie and would quite happily sit down to watch it with the kids.

3 out of 5 stars THERE ARE FAR WORSE ONES OUT THERE.......2007-11-02

After the loss of a special military operation on Isle Damas, Professors Nathan Phipps, (William Langlois) and Dawn Porter, (Gail Harris) are assigned to clean it up before people find out about it. Trying to get away from a casino robbery, Drake, (Paul Logan) Tiffany, (Melissa Brasselle) and Reece, (Cam Newlin) crash-land on the island during the middle of a tropic storm. Going inland to find some repair equipment, they stumble upon Nathan's daughter Rebecca, (Glori-Anne Gilbert) and the rest of the scientific team encountering a giant attacking Komodo Dragon. After fending off the attack, they are welcome back to their compound and invited to stay. When the compound runs low on equipment, they try to leave to the island before a military operation blows up the island.

The Good News: Here we go with another Sci-Fi Channel creature feature, and here is actually a pretty good one. The one thing that really works is the connection with the giant monster films of the early 50s and 60s. Crashing-landing on an island conducting genetic experiments with creatures and then encountering the creatures along the way screams of a 50s B-movie plot, and it gives the film some familiarity. The look back to the past gives the film a charm that most similar films don't really have, and that's a pretty surprising feat to accomplish. However, there is a change that works out for the better over the other films. The giant Komodo in this film is a fully-grown animal, and isn't the baby of a larger creature that comes back later looking for revenge. That is a common factor in many similar films, and the fact that it's missing here with the Komodo being fully grown and attacking is a really original move that needs to be commended and recognized. The action comes across pretty frequently, and it keeps the pace going nicely. One sequence involving a chase in a fleeing truck is especially nice, and is easily a highlight that is quite exciting and a little thrilling in places along the way. Even more, we see the Komodo really and often, so even though they look really bad digitally, it isn't as terrible as it really should've been. And perhaps one of the greatest aspects is Glori-Anne Gilbert's extended topless scene.

The Bad News: The creatures here look so horrible that it's almost a travesty to call these computer generated creatures the same name as the Dinos created for "Jurassic Park." The fact that the same technique was used for the monsters in both films makes it all the more apparent that the Dinos will forever be the standard against which all CG creations will forever be judged. The results here are that bad. There are some pretty gaping plot holes on display here, and even though knowing them won't seriously undermine the enjoyment of the film, they are still there and pretty noticeable. The fact that the film is also just a giant cheese-fest doesn't help matters. There's really no shocks, jumps or anything, and the film plays out like a giant cheesy good time.

The Final Verdict: It's a giant cheese-fest, that's for sure, and Dinos from ten years ago still look better, but if you like the creature features from the 50s and 60s, then this isn't all that bad. Some kinks need to be either smoothed out or fixed, but there's far worse ones I've seen out there. Take it for what you will.

      3 out of 5 stars IT'S NOT REALLY HORROR.......2007-02-21

I have this film is the 50 horror classics so I decided to watch it last night and it was ok but not brilliant as I found it was more of a thriller then a horror film. Bela Lugosi is his usual creepy self and that's always a good thing as that's what he is well known for.

The story is: It is prior to the commencement of World War II and Japan's fiendish Black Dragon Society is hatching an evil plot with the Nazis. They instruct a brilliant scientist, Dr. Melcher (Bela Lugosi) to travel to Japan on a secret mission. There he operates on six Japanese conspirators, transforming them to resemble six American leaders. The actual leaders are murdered and replaced with their likenesses.

I know its an old film but I thought the picture could have been cleaned up and the sound could of been remastered because every now and again you could hear a crackling sound and the voices would become muffled slightly and you could see bits of dirt and scratches on the film but as I said its an old film so its to be expected. Sometimes I like the dirt and scratches visible but only in silent films.

It wasn't really scary either but the role of Bela Lugosi was brilliant as always so I enjoyed the film but its not one of his best.

There are no special features on the version I watched so its just the film. All in all its a good film but it has nothing to raise it above ok.

Thank you for reading my review
