A comedy that never bores me.......2008-01-16
I just love watching this comedy. I keep seeing the repeats on UKGOLD and can watch episodes again and again - The problem is that like many program repeats they are never shown in production order, so I am now the happy owner of the complete box set so I can watch them back to back from the start.
The acting is superb, and if as one review states, the writing is like that of formulaic American sitcoms (which I hate) then at least it shows that it's the comedy that counts, and the BBC know how to make it funny.
I also still find that the quality hasn't diminished even since most peoples favourite character Nick (Kris Marshall) left the series - the newer characters have fitted in perfectly.
One point to make about Amazon's Synopsis - This is not the first sitcom Robert Lindsey has appeared in since Citizen Smith - He appeared in the 2 series of the very surreal channel 4 series 'Nightingales' in 1990, currently available at a very low price from Amazon. If you haven't seen it then you will either love it or hate it - It is weird (I love it).
Very funny!.......2007-11-06
I have been watching My Family since the first series and I think that it is a great British comedy. I find many of the situations easy to relate to and I think the writers do well to make the audience feel as though they are being allowed inside the Harper family.
Obviously Nick is a favourite character for a lot of people as he provides the majorities of the laughs. I think that Zoe Wanamaker and Robert Lindsay play a very good married couple and they seem very comfortable with each other which makes their roles more believable.
I am so pleased that at last, we can have series 1-7 all together!
A Fun Comedy.......2007-11-03
This BBC comedy is a fun show. It has lots of great moments that you will remember for a long time.
The best character is Nick because everything he does is so stupid yet hilarious at the same time!! Unfortuanetly he is only in the series for the first 3-4 seasons.
The show also has other excellent characters such as Ben, the dad of the family. he is incredibly moody and the actor(Robert Lindsay)excels at playing this character. The other characters in the show all have there parts and play them well.
The show comes together to form a good comedy show which you will enjoy.
Sometimes amusing - but ultimately fell flat........2007-11-02
My Family is one of those TV series which was launched amid a fanfare of publicity hailing this as one of the best sit-coms to be produced, but it fell a bit flat. The series wasn't bad, it was just never great.
Part of the problem lies in the fact that this was written following the American model, using a team of writers to come up with situations and gags. But this left the series feeling a bit hollow. One aspect which makes British comedy so great, is that the writing team behind it tends to consist of one or two people, this ensures a genuine love for the characters - and this comes across on screen. But with My Family, the characters seemed two-dimensional, and the scripts formulaic. I could never warm to the characters, with their middle class home and 'hillarious' antics, there never seemed to be any substance to them.
Yes, there were funny moments, but on the whole it felt as though this should have been screened with the kids programmes around 16:00. It was never witty or intelligent, the actors in it are great actors - but with the poor screenplay they always seemed to be overacting, which felt a bit cringeworthy at times and added to the feeling that this was too simplistic.
Hopefully lessons have been learnt and the Beeb will continue to green-light more intimately written comedies which may not appeal to the masses, but will secure a loyal smaller fanbase. But congratulations to them for trying a new approach, and to be fair, a lot of people have enjoyed it - I wasn't one, and it won't go down as a classic.

Still a good laugh..........2007-10-07
Having seen every series of My Family, I believe that the programme was never quite the same after the departure of Nick (the eldest son), who in my mind was the funniest character. Following Nick's departure at the end of series 4 (bar 1 episode in series 5), he was shortly replaced by the character Alfie Butts (Nick's friend), and more frequent appearances of Abi and Roger. The programme has still maintained much of its comic element, however I am a believer that the first three series saw the programme at its funniest. Another small problem with the later series (series 5/6 onwards) is that, not only does Nick leave home, but Janey too leaves home and Michael turns into more of an adult. This, for me, slightly defeats the object of the programme, which is making fun of everyday family life. With no children, I found that the programme became more of a partnership of Ben (the father) and Susan (the mother), and lost its origional family feel to an extent. To make up for this slight deficiency of everyday family incidences that could be made fun of, the plots of the later episodes have become more far fetched and the writers have perhaps started to run out of the simple but hilarious ideas which made the first few series so hilarious.
Despite all this, the programme, as I say, is still a good laugh and has maintained most of its comedy. I still find them great fun to watch so, by all means, I would reccomend My Family Series 7 to anyone in search of a good Laugh.
Hope I have helped.
still going strong..........2007-09-17
My Family follows the ups and downs (primarily downs) of those in the Harper family. There's Ben (Robert Lindsay) - a long suffering father, husband and dentist. There's Susan (Zoe Wanamaker) - Ben's wife who has become a controlling mother hen. Their three children Nick (though he doe not feature in this series which is a shame) Janey (who I am glad to report DOES feature in every episode of this latest series with her son Kenzo) and Michael (who is still willing to sell family members on ebay for a fair price). In this series, we see Kenzo's father's identity finally revealed, Kenzo tries his hand at child acting, Ben and Susan's relationship is re-vowed and Abi and Richard (two additional oddly amusing "creatures" who have been brought in to replace the sadly missed humour that came wih Nick's character) finally wed. All around laughs, with a promise that this series has recovered some of the magic that was lost in the previous few. Worth a buy.
The show.......2007-08-10
I think that My Family is the best show on earth. It is so much better than it's earlier series, but If your looking for a good laugh, then look no futhur this is the show for you.

Why add background laughs?.......2007-12-31
I have really enjoyed this first serie and have already ordered the second one. I only hope that the producers will have given up the background laughing of the audience in the next episodes because it is really unnecessary and even a nuisance in such a quality programme. I wish it were possible to switch it off as it is already possible to choose between the options with and no subtitles.
Bland and Predictable.......2007-08-28
I can't believe this is supposed to be funny.
I wish I did find such a poor sitcom to be amusing, but I need something a bit more stimulating than this pathetic excuse for comedy.
I think Citylink were trying to tell you something...........2007-08-10
What a marvellous service Citylink did for the customer below by not delivering this embarrassing slop to their door.
To call this 'comedy' is on a par with thinking of George W Bush as a grownup.
Honestly, i've seen funnier episodes at the doctor's and the sooner Britain gets a grip of itself and finds its funny bone in terms of sitcoms the better.
Now where did i put Citylink's phone number....
One of the best DVDs and the worst delivery!.......2007-06-13
Well, I watched this on telly and wanted to buy this for my collection.
I have been a customer of Amazon for 7 years and I had never made any complaint and I have never returned any goods. I have also shopped online from several other companies.
The delivery company Citylink is simply a disgrace for such a reputable company like Amazon to use. I was home for the past one week and stayed in the lounge all day to wait for the products. However, I tracked these items online and found out Citylink claims that they had attempted to deliver these items and 'carded'. Funny enough, no one rang the doorbell and no postcards were left. I called Citylink early yesterday morning and told them I'd leave the door wide open and lights on and I would be at home all day. At 2pm, I tracked it from citylink's website, it said they had attempted to deliver at 1PM. This is a complete joke and lie.
You can type in Citylink and review in google and find out other customers' experiences with citylink. Enough said.

Drivel.......2007-03-07
My Family is complete drivel,i can't believe people are giving this 5 stars!!?? In the pantheon of classic british comedy,e.g only fools, blackadder,Royle family etc this ranks very low on the scale indeed, the episodes are corny and very very unfunny, please if you have not seen this show you are one of the lucky ones..avoid please!

Best Comedy AROUND........2007-02-27
My family is without a doubt the best comedy to come out of the BBC in the past years. Much better than any who consider 'little Britain' or such like to be classic entertainment. Nick played by Kris Marshall is the best out of a fantastic cast and im sure he will go on to great things. If you particularly enjoy these episodes which I have again and again I strongly recomend series 1,3 and 4 as well. This is a compulsory buy for anyone in the world! If you dont want to risk it without watching an episode check uktv gold most days.

My Family and Other Animals.......2006-10-29
I had been hoping for some time that this adaptation would be released on disc but was irritated to find that certain memorable sequences have been cut from this version. Viewers will miss the humour at the Greek customs of Mother Durrell's bag being retained, of Margot in full cry from an upper window, of some of the eccentricities of Larry's artist friends. Also a surrealistic scene of the family eating of a table in the sea and the conclusion has been docked of references to the political tension in Europe in the late 1930's. Still most of the film has survived intact and all the chief performers turn in first class performances.

They arent my friends honest.......2008-02-07
I didn't really want to buy this DVD only its incredibly hard trying to explain to a 2 year old that HIS friends tigger and pooh (or tiddler pooh as it is known in our house due to limited vocabulary) aren't on tv 24 hours a day just waiting for him to tune in.
Unlike a previous reviewer I knew exactly what to expect and that it was from the new disney series but I think if you forget that it has anything to do with the original books and drawings and take it on its own merit it is a lovely and very engaging series, which is ideal for toddlers.
Wonderful, but it's already been on TV!.......2007-12-02
Contrary to other reviews, this is actually a delightful tale featuring the popular new characters that have thrilled my pre-school daughter over the last year. Darby and Buster are natural additions to the Winnie The Pooh story, and my daughter can't get enough of both their TV show, and now this festive DVD.
HOWEVER! I was disgusted, having bought this for full price, to suddenly see it broadcast on the Disney Channel - less than three weeks after the DVD was released. What a con! Disney, I expect better of you...
What have Disney done to our Pooh!.......2007-11-23
If it was not already bad enough that Disney turned A.A. Milne's and E.H. Shepard's original and wonderful Pooh stories into a cartoon, but now they have completely removed Christopher Robin!
He has been replaced by a little munchkin girl thing who also has a dog.
The last story in the Pooh books "In Which Christopher Robin and Pooh Come to an Enchanted Place, and We Leave Them There":
Christopher Robin says to Pooh
Pooh promise you won't forget about me ever. Not even when I'm a hundred"
"How old shall I be then?"
"Ninety nine"
"I promise"he said
Still with his eyes on the world Christopher Robin put out a hand and felt for Pooh's paw.
"Pooh" he said earnestly "if....if I'm not quite..." he stopped and tried again."Pooh whatever happens, you will understand won't you?"
"Understand what?"
"Oh nothing" he laughed and jumped to his feet "Come on !"
"Where?" said Pooh
"Anywhere" said Christopher Robin
So they went off together. But wherever they go and whatever happens to them on the way, in that Enchanted Place on the top of the Forest a little boy and his Bear will always be playing.
Disney have betrayed the true meaning and heart of Pooh.
This dvd movie is a very plastic movie and it is heartbreaking to watch A.A. Milnes and E.H Shepard's Bear being turned into this awful thing.
True Pooh friends should avoid this dvd.
Buy the original Pooh books from Amazon and discover the real Pooh and friends and all that they truly mean. Visit the real Ashdown Forest in East Sussex where you can still find Poohsticks Bridge, The Enchanted Place and many other special places which featured in A.A. Milne's books. The true spirit of Pooh is alive and well there.
Long live A.A. Milne's and E.H. Shepard's original Winnie the Pooh!

Simply the best...but..........2007-09-07
My Family is a great TV Series and the addition of Abi in season 3 more than makes up for the loss of Janey. Though it's still nice to see Janey in her few appearances in this season. Biggest complaint and the reason it gets four stars instead of all five is the absence of the christmas episode. Even thouh there is a screenshot of that episode on the back of the box. That episode is not only one of the funniest My Family episodes ever, at the same time it contains the vital plot moment of Janey being pregnant. So when you pop in Season 4 without knowing that you missed an episode of season 3, you might wonder why Susan is talking about some baby. The fact that they sell that episode on a separate DVD which is, compared to the season DVDs, definitley overprized, gives the buyer the feeling of somehow being ripped off. Also, the DVD box says "The complete third series", which as we found out, is not the case. Still, that series is worth buying. Just wait for the christmas special to be sold for a reasonable price.

My Family.......2007-03-20
A fantastic comedy which took the idea of Butterflies and made it into a much more lively and funny treat. I always find it is the ideal comedy to watch on a Sunday night before a miserable week. This has to be the best series, with no bloopers, faults or critisisms avalible to tell. Ideal for everyone
They've still got it! .......2006-09-04
I know a lot of people is losing it a bit after the first two series, I think this is the most funny! Ben && Susan are still absolutely hilarious, Michael is growing up, Janey's off to uni, but Nick is not in it as much, but still very often. Theres also a new addition - Abi. Although she annoys me sometimes, I still think shes a good addition. This boxset yet again features 13 brilliant episodes, theres my favourite, 'Waiting to inhale' When Susan finds drugs in Michaels pocket and while they decide how to catch him out, they feel that they should smoke it for his safety, and it is so funny! And the hilarious one where they stay at a hotel after being kicked out of her uni room by Janey, and they pretend to be strangers to spice up their relationship - named Johnny Stud and Delouris Delage (sp?). Nothing has ever made my laugh more than all of the My family dvds and they are well worth buying!
Happy Families.......2006-03-21
Another fantastic series of the Noughties' answer to "Two-Point-Four Children". While lacking the political sharpness of the pre-cursor, "My Family" is definitely an antidote to the clever-clever sitcoms which play to an audience of their own writers and late-night BBC Three watchers rather than the general public. Robert Lindsay and Zoe Wanamaker are two absolutely classic BritCom actors and made for each other. Meanwhile, although we don't see as much of Janie this time, the children are now sufficiently grown up - if you could ever say that about Nick - to have more of their own lives this time round.
Abi is the new addition to the family, and while it might be thought that having both her and Nick on the same show is overkill, she slots perfectly into the setting - and gives Michael a new reason to exist, since it would hardly be fitting for him to fancy his own sister. Delightfully dotty, by the end of the series she is part of the furniture and replaces Janie's withering sarcasm with a wit of her own, particularly when her college video appears on late night Channel Four...
A feel-good, light-hearted romp, and one for relaxing after a hard day's night. Essential viewing for anyone wondering where all the good Britcoms went to.

My Family Specials.......2006-12-21
I recommend 'My Family-The Christmas Specials'. This comedy is very funny and very well written. This shows in these Christmas specials where there is one joke after another. The characters are at their very best. The first special (Christmas 2002) is my favourite. In this episode Nick tries to start a Christmas tree business much to his fathers annoyance and Janey comes home pregnant. She refuses to tell her family who the father is. This DVD was an excellent buy and is a must for anyone who loves this comedy.
poor value for money.......2006-11-30
It may be sad of me, but I love this dysfunctional family. Easy going comedy you don't have to think about & usually high standards of acting from the cast. But this compilation is very poor value for money. There are 3 half hour episodes - christmas being a side issue in 2 of them, and 1 hour long special.
When compared to the other series compilations, this gives about 156 minutes of entertainment, compared with well over six and a half hours on a normal dvd.
Spend your money on a series compilation please

Pity us poor colonialist on the other side of the pond who have no relief but to watch only Seasons 1 & 2 of "My Family". Take pity on the Bush-whacked (sic) heathen! Distribute seasons 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & the Xmas special here!
Long wait, but worth it.......2007-06-27
I love this show.
I ordered this last year as i thought that it would come out one month later, but it didn't, and it got pushed back to December 06, then June this year. I have now got it after a long wait.
I've seen the series on the BBC and the repeats on UKTV Gold, and i still cannot get enough of the mad harper family. The new Character Alfie is great, but is not a patch on Nick who i think is the best character in the show and i think that they should bring him back in Series 8.
This series has some great moments such as the pyramus scam, the susan look-alike and the dog which alfie gets and seems to understand.
Overall, a great DVD and bring on series 7 to DVD (it is set for release in september but after my experince of this release, i would not bet on it being released at that time, maybe sometime next year).
Not the best, but still funny.......2007-06-26
The Harpers return in the sixth series of the long-running "Britcom" series, starring Ben (Robert Lindsay), his wife Susan (Zoe Wanamaker), children Michael and Janey, neice Abi, her boyfriend and fellow dentist Roger Bailey and new addition to the cast, Alfie Butts (who was introduced in the 2005 Christmas special).
There's all the usual hilarious situations going on, including Ben attacking cyclists and joining a gay brotherhood, Susan joins a pyramid selling scheme, Janey dates a dentist whilst Michael dates a girl who is scarily similar to his mother and Roger is getting closer to popping the question to Abi.
Even though this series is very funny, it seems to not be at the high level of quality it was in the first four or five series. For example - Aflie, although can be quite funny, is a completely pointless character, seeming to only be there to fill the gap of Nick's dopey character (Kris Marshall left the show after series four). Abi and Roger come across as a little too stupid, making them feel a lot less believable. Also having so many extra characters in the house all the time makes the show feel a little over-run by non-family members (isn't the point of the show to be focused on the family?). Ben (in my opinion the best character) is also absent from 2 of the episodes.
Another problem with series 6 is that there are only 7 episodes, making you feel that you have been a little short-changed as the price is exactly the same as the previous 14 episode, 2 disc series.
Overall, although not the strongest, funniest or best series of 'My Family', it is still one of the best British comedy series for a long time and is always great fun to watch with a lot of guaranteed laughs.
Ploughing a lone furrow?.......2006-12-30
My Family is a long-running British sitcom starring Robert Lindsay and Zoë Wanamaker that first aired in 2000. Six series have so far been aired and a seventh series will air in 2007 . In 2004, it came 24th in Britain's Best Sitcom.
My Family is about the life of the Harper family, a fictional English family, who live in the London suburbs. Ben, a dentist, and Susan, a tour guide, have three children, Nick, Janey and Michael, all of whom cause problems in their own way. While Susan is a control freak, Ben prefers to leave the children to it and tries not to get involved. In the third series, Abi, the daughter of Ben's cousin, comes to lives with them, and she eventually falls for Roger, Ben's neighbouring dentist. The humour, like most domestic sitcoms, came from the relationships of the family members and the situations they end up in.
The series is scripted by a team of writers, following the American model. Historically, British sitcoms were more generally written by one or two writers. By employing a wider number of writers to brainstorm jokes for each episode, the BBC has been able to maintain a consistent and relatively long-lived product without having to wait for a single writer to produce more material.
My Family is a simple domestic comedy that relied for its laughs upon character and sharp dialogue, rather than complex plotting, and was well served by the excellence of Zoe Wanamaker and Robert Lindsay. Though few critics warmed to it, finding it middle-of-the-road and old-fashioned, above-average audience ratings encouraged the BBC to stick at it, commissioning further (longer-than-average) seasons and eventually scoring a sizeable and deserved hit.
