1 out of 5 stars Absolute Twaddle!.......2007-12-16

Utter rubbish! Little Britain cannot live up to the standards of British comedy such as The Two Ronnies, Monty Python and That Michell and Webb Look.

1 out of 5 stars BORING!.......2007-08-03

This is utter tripe! How the hell can this boring rubbish be so acclaimed? Alright, this is sort of funny for young children because of the toilet humour and dull slapstick, but it is terrible. I have never laughed once watching Little Britain. It's a crying shame really, because David Walliams always appears very witty and funny in other T.V. appearances, and Matt Lucas was great as the drummer on Shooting stars.
All in all, boring rubbish.

1 out of 5 stars Utter parp.......2007-06-30

The only time Lucas and Walliams has ever put a smile on my face was when they did rock profile with Jamie Theakston.

Little Britain will be another Fast show. Considered successful at the time because of viewing figures and media attention, but it will soon become bargin bucket fodder in scope or help the aged.

"Classic comedy" this is not.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-26

One of the funniest British comedies ever. It is no accident that the catchphrases have caught on in society. It is quite rude but also very funny.
There will be those offended by it's rudeness, or not fans of it's sometimes schoolboy humour, but on the whole most people will laugh out loud when watching this.

1 out of 5 stars idiot central.......2007-04-22

worst program ever, so obvious, the first ever episode was pretty good, should of stopped there, every other episode contains exactly the same joke...if i had the memory of a goldfish it would get 5 stars, but thankfully i don't, heres your one, cant get zero unfortunately

marion and geoff, mighty boosh, peep show, smoking room....quality, not this guff!!

thanks, rant over :)

Amazon.co.uk Review

"Britain, Britain, Britain, land of technological achievement. We've had running water for over ten years, an underground tunnel that links us to Peru, and we invented the cat," narrates Tom Baker gleefully at the beginning of Little Britain, introducing the first hit show for fledgling digital channel BBC3 and the best new comedy since The League of Gentlemen. In fact, creators and stars Matt Lucas and David Walliams acknowledge a large debt to the League, not only in the gallery of grotesques all performed by the duo, but also in the way in which the familiar sketch-show format is expanded by clever use of locale: not Royston Vasey here, but "Britain" itself in all its perverse splendour: from Darkly Noon, where chavette Vicky Pollard seems all too frighteningly real ("Yeah, but no, but yeah. Shut up!"), to the Welsh village with only one gay, to the council estate where buck-toothed Lou looks after apparently wheelchair-bound Andy ("Yeah, I know"), to Kelsey Grammar School where pupils are baffled and confused by their fusty teacher, and many more besides. It's unashamedly puerile stuff and, as with The Fast Show before it, many sketches rely on a single incident or catchphrase repeated over and over in only slightly different contexts. But it works brilliantly, thanks to the characterisations of Lucas and Walliams, their sharp eye for the eccentricities of modern life, and of course that surreal voiceover from Tom Baker.

On the DVD: This is a handsome two-disc set chock full of tasty extras. Lucas and Walliams provide a surprisingly serious commentary, joined in turn by producer Myfanwy Moore and director Steve Bendelack (a League of Gentlemen alumnus). There's the original pilot episode, plus plenty of deleted scenes, live sketches, several behind-the-scenes segments, an interview with Jonathan Ross, and a half-hour Best of Rock Profiles, the hilarious spoof series in which Walliams and Lucas impersonated various rock stars. If that's not enough, you can also select from a gallery to watch all the sketches featuring your favourite characters. Another triumph for Auntie Beeb. --Mark Walker

1 out of 5 stars I can't stand this program..........2008-02-07

OK, I may be on my own on this one, but I just don't get it. How Tom Baker was ever coerced into appearing in this annoying dross is beyond me. Don't get me wrong, I love comedy - I'm a big fan of Eddie Izzard and Bill Bailey amongst others. But there is something wrong with this sketch show. After all the hype surrounding Little Btitain, my girlfriend bought me a copy of this series one DVD, but it just isn't to my taste. Favourable comparisons with great British sketch shows such as Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Two Ronnies and even more recent output such as Big Train and Mitchell & Webb's recent ventures are hugely unjust - this is a show that relies mainly on tacky innuendo and cheap catchphrases. It reminds me a lot of "When the Whistle Blows", the sitcom penned by Ricky Gervais' character in Extras. Having been unfortunate enough to have recently seen some of the more recent series 2 and 3, it has only got worse. The same old catchphrases now sound even more tired and the scenes have taken their shock tactics further to try to "push the boundries" - an incontinent elderly lady and a vomitting racist do not make good comedy. Poor, poor quality.

Whilst I appreciate Matt Lucas' comedy acting - he is very versatile and definitely the best thing about this series - David Walliams seems to play the same character over and over, but with a slightly different lisp. There is a huge quantity of inventive and genuinely funny comedy out there that doesn't strive to appeal merely to the lowest common denominator - please buy something decent rather than this rubbish. I'm sure that for most prospective purchasers, my opinion will count for very little, but for those who have not seen this program and have only heard the hype - you have now been warned!

4 out of 5 stars This Is My Favourite Series, EVER!.......2007-09-16

The first series is BRILLIANT x3...Brilliant characters, Brilliant original catchphrases and brilliant humour...definately the best series for me!

4 out of 5 stars Nice!.......2007-07-04

Nowhere near as good as the second series or the third series, but I kind of enjoyed this one. Some of the sketches were not really necessary since they weren't that funny, but most of the sketches are hilarious. Well done, Lucas and Walliams!

5 out of 5 stars Want that One!.......2007-01-18

Excellant. Little Britain isn't to everyone's tastes, but this DVD is full of special features plus all 8 episodes from season one, so it is a good deal. This was easily the best series of Little Britain, containing not only all the on-going characters (Lou and his wheelchair bound friend Andy, out gay Welshman Daffyd, teenage chav Vicky Pollard, and the prime minister and his aid, Sebastian), but also many well loved characters who were later dropped - Mad Scottish hotel owner Roy McCooney, stage hypnotist Kenny Craig and singing midget Dennis Waterman. It also was without much of the grotesque and obscene jokes found in later series. This is British sketch show comedy at it's best, akin to the works of Catherine Tate (The Catherine Tate Show) and Sacha Baron Cohen (Ali G, Bruno, Borat), and whether certain people like it or not, thousands find this hilarious, and it hit Britain by storm. This is where it all started...

1 out of 5 stars Wake up - this is awful.......2006-11-12

They said that Freddie Star only had one joke. These two (Lucas & Walliams) also have one joke each - and they aren't very good.
This is a poor relative (and rip off) of the League of Gentlemen and the Fast Show - both of which were infinitely superior.
Thankfully, most people are starting to realise this is not funny and turning towards decent comedy written by people with talent!

Amazon.co.uk Review

Bundling together the first two series of the smash hit BBC series, this double pack of Little Britain: Series 1 & 2 is an economical and entertainment-packed way to catch up with one of the comedy phenomenon of the decade.

A sketch show focusing on an eclectic selection of characters, there's plenty here to enjoy. From catchphrase comedy, including Dafydd, the only gay in the village, and the yeah-but-no-but-yeah-spouting Vicky Pollard, through to quieter, wryly observed takes on everyday life, it's hard not to be entertained.

It's tricky to pick highlights, but the trick here is that the show' creators--Matt Lucas and David Walliams--have created numerous memorable characters, and have a great knack at putting them in tightly written, at times gut-bustingly funny scenarios. Witness the adventures of wheelchair-bound Andy, as he leads his carer Lou on a merry dance, for evidence.

Little Britain isn't a flawless show by any means, and there are a fair share of troughs to the undeniable peaks. Yet Lucas and Walliams, through both their writing and performances, keep the laughs coming regularly and reliably. For Little Britain is fast, frequently very funny indeed, and has enough moments to ensure these discs will be spun time and time again.--Simon Brew

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Has some Brilliant and some awful characterization.......2007-03-24

Good compilation..not perfect but then the excellent parts far outweigh the bad. Best characters;
Lou and Andy
Vicky Pollard
Daffyd - The Only Gay in the village
Marjorie Dawes - Fatfighter

Worst Characters
The Tory Party Ladies
Molly Sugden's Bridesmaid
The Guy who had a crush on his mates grandmother

It does avoid political correctness which is good but sometimes the crassness is a bit too much

Good Price too

1 out of 5 stars Complete, ammoral filth.......2006-09-23

We purchased seasons 1 through 3 by recommendation. No wonder the world is in the shape it is today.

The humor is coarse, debasing and degrading, depicting the homosexual lifestyle as the filthiest above all.

All portrayed by blokes who support/are of such an entity. We gladly donated these DVDs to an English AIDS fundraiser group in London.

Disgusting. If utterly British in nature, then God, please save the Queens!

4 out of 5 stars Little Britian Raw and Hilarious - Thanks to the Brits.......2006-09-02

Thank God for the Brits - We would never see anything so raw and hilarious in the US. I was on the floor crying at so many episodes of this show - this show takes risks, and i like that. Across the pond we would never have a young man dreaming about screwing his friends grandma, a lady who throws up every time her food is tainted by a person or race she doesn't like, the village gay Davvvid, and Emily and her transvestite ways - How fresh and funny. There are few skits I could do w/o, but that is all shows. I loove Andy the guy in the wheelchair who says I want that one and then changes his mind, and he can walk, it is hilarious! And Sebastian who is in love w/ the Prime Minister - total gem! Glad I can rent this in the states.

1 out of 5 stars !.......2006-08-03

After hearing many friends raving about this show and critics comparing it to the (fantastically hilarious) 'The Fast Show' I decided that I must be missing out on something and sat down to watch this 'comedy gem'.

I really wish I hadn't. The show completely lacked wit, relying on tired catchphrases that were hardly funny to begin with. It was also extremely predictable and lacking in originality. It seemed as if Matt Lucas and David Walliams had just come up with one episode then repeated it over and over again in different locations.

If you wan't to watch a good sketch show watch the Fast Show as this is nothing more than an unfunny attempt to copy it.

1 out of 5 stars Totally unfunny.......2006-05-25

After hearing a lot about Little Britain and seeing that it had won a couple of awards I settled down to watch it, only to be staggeringly disappointed.
I really tried to like it assuming you had to 'get into' the characters or that once the idea had been established it would settle down and start to be interesting. It wasn't and if anything was less funny as they seemed to run out of ideas. I watched six episodes without a titter.
The problem for me is that it seems to be devoid of any truth whatsoever. Usually, funny characters behave badly or disgustingly but leave us with a glimpse of truth to identify with. We may not have liked Alf Garnet but we knew people like him and even recognised some of him in us. Similarly the Smith and Jones characters or Tim Nice but Dim etc,. But the Little Britain characters are universally unlikeable, disgusting and frankly pointless without being the slightest bit believable or interesting.
You'd be better off buying Goodness Gracious Me, The Office, One foot In the Grave or Ab Fab
This is comedy for the reality TV generation.
