surprisingly rather good!.......2006-05-16
Prior to this release Sean Penn had been generating very bad publicity in the media brawling with photographer's etc and this behaviour prompted the media to slate this movie which is without question why this movie unjustly flopped NOT because it's no good.O.k,so people couldn't imagine Madonna playing a missionary because of her pop star persona but they could've praised her for trying. Her acting is wooden but only from time to time and probably down to all the pressure her marriage was under from the media but then who could do their job 100% in the same situation?.Anyways, the story revolves around a missionary,Gloria, hiring a American salesman,Glendon,to help her find missing stolen opium("Faraday's Flowers" to be exact)to help wounded soldier's.The deal is Glen helps Gloria get the opium and he gets his ticket home to the U.S which she has stolen from him to get him to do the job.Whilst searching they come across villain's who are also after the stolen opium and try to con the two of them or torture Glen to get the information he has learnt from mistress China Doll as to the opium's whereabouts. The character's get double crossed by one person or another and after a bumpy start to their relationship being complete opposites,Gloria+Glendon fall in love the more time they spend with each other. The movie was intended to be a love story but actually came out as a comedy/adventure as it's scattered with very funny/exciting moment's.Madonna has said in interview's that the director cut some really good scene's that made this movie better and it's a shame that version wasn't released on dvd for everyone to see instead.
This movie has almost always had poor review's but don't believe them, either buy it or rent it and judge for yourself and you may be "surprised"!.

Not for the faint hearted.......2004-07-30
There's no getting away from it, this movie is absolutely awful. But you can't blame it all on the Poison Penns, as the tabloids called them back in 1986 when this was being filmed. The script lacks direction and it can't make up it's mind whether to be an all-action adventure movie like Indiana Jones (which was doing big business at the box office at the time) or a smoochy romance movie. In the end, it's neither - the stunts and action scenes are cheap looking and the script stilted. Madonna is acting like she's reading from an autocue and looks bored stiff.
The only redeeming quality this film has is that Sean Penn is the only one acting with any conviction. He really is carrying this film. The film does have a few interesting points; Sean and Madonna's looks of affection they have for each other is really quite sweet, she does try to act when she's in scenes with him, she does look beautiful in the movie and the backdrop scenes are truly stunning. Sadly, this is not enough to stop this film from being one of the naffest films I've ever seen.
Only watch this if you're a Madonna fan.
