Nothing like the book at all.......2007-08-21
Ken Stott may look the part of Ian Rankin's John Rebus but in my opinion he just doesn't capture his character in this adaptation. As for his sidekick Siobhan Clarke , she doesn't look like she belongs in a police station at all; behind a perfume counter in Debenhams yes, in an Edinburgh CID office no. However, what have they done with the plot of the novel on which this TV adaptation is allegedly based ? The two bear no resemblance to each other whatsoever apart from the little coffins and the names of some of the main characters in the book. Even the title "The Falls" refers to a waterfall in a small village in Fife which doesn't even feature in the TV adaptation. "The Falls" is a good book but this TV programme is just poor and pointless .
Stott not my idea of Rebus.......2007-04-10
I have read all of the Rebus books and seen all of the John Hannah films of the stories. I must admit I agree that Hannah was too young for the part, although the productions were excellent and I enjoyed them. I always imagined Rebus looking more like Gabriel Byrne. Stott is not at all my idea of what Rebus looks like. I will continue with the books alone and imagine Rebus as I think he looks, thank you very much.
Bring back John Hannah.......2007-01-26
When I initially watched the John Hannah series of Rebus a few years ago I was disappointed. However, although Ken Stott may be more physically alike to Rebus, the new series is now where as good as the adaptations of the books in the John Hannah series. I could see the Ken Stott versions appealing to people who have not read the Rankin novels. The stories in the Stott versions are very watered down and in some cases bear no resemblance at all to the novels. Also, there has been too much messing about with his character e.g. his love of football and his love life. I recently bought the John Hannah versions and after looking at them again thought they were excellent. Although, he may have been a bit young to portray Rebus, the episodes were much longer which allowed them to delve into the intracies of the multi-layered story lines of the novels. They were also a lot 'darker' and caught much more of the atmosphere of the novels. Therefore, I would recommend that anyone who has read the novels should watch the Hannah versions instead.
Looks good as Rebus, but no substance.......2006-09-24
Like many other Scottish Rebus fans i was delighted to see Ken Stott cast as our reluctant hero. Having seen the John Hannah versions, which i thought were very good, they are close to the Ian Rankin character in most respects.
What a huge disappointment the Ken Stott versions are, they miss the whole point of John Rebus as Ian Rankin saw him, gone are his hang ups, the frailties and strengths vanished, all the things that identify Rebus as different and unique have been lost. AS for the storylines, they are even farther from the novel than the character!!!
The list of successful movies where the main character bears no physical resemblance to our visualisations from the novel is huge. Read JAWS and then watch the movie!!!
A bit of a let down!.......2006-09-14
Ken Stott has to be one of my favourite actors, and yet I feel let down by the production of these programmes not because of Ken Stott but because of the story lines. I am a die hard Ian Rankin fan and own all his books to date [...] Rebus, in my opinion, is a different person in the books as he is on the tv and the stories are too broken down, they don't drag you in as the books do. Fleshmarket Close was the biggest disappointment as the programme cuts out why it was actually called that in the first place! I give it 3 stars for effort and for the actors!
