Inimitable Chomsky.......2005-03-08
Chomsky is a professor of linguistics at MIT in the US and has earned deserved fame for both his acheivements in this field as well as his dissenting political opinions. Opinions, I should add, which are wholly justified. He ranks with Marx and the Bible as one of the top 10 quoted sources in the humanities (which ought to give you some sort of clue about the massive impact he has made).
This documentary is a simple film recording of a speach he makes on the topic of War On Terror - topical in the current climate. His stance is principally about the official definition of terrorism, and how this is used by the US to position people's opinions in support of the administration's unjust conflicts. Chomsky highlights the hypocracy of this considering the unlawful sponsorship of terrorist states the US has been and is continuing to support. Examples from Central and South America as well as Indo-China are plentiful. Chomsky contends that the notion of a "War On Terror" is simply a logical impossibility. And this is true.
I have personally contacted Noam Chomsky regarding some of the issues he raises in the speech and am extremely satisfied about the integrity of his theories as well as the extent to which they have been thoroughly researched.
Just to mention some smaller details about the DVD. You should note that the video is in essence the film of a man standing and talking to an audience of intellectuals. The camera work is not hollywood standard but neither should it have to be. It is the message that is important as a stimulus to further discussion and research. The extra features include Chomsky's biography and a questions & answers session.
One can hardly fail to learn something from Chomsky's speech.
