The first time I encountered the music of Abdullah Ibrahim was when this film was shown was back around the time it was made when it was shown (possibly on Channel 4) on tv. While the film quality has a dated look to it (especially for those used to cgi quality everything), the content - both as music and the social history of South Africa - makes it well worth searching out.

Be careful when buying this. I bought it through a Marketplace seller and whilst the DVD plays and looks genuine, the quality of the recording isn't that good. The documentary dates from 1987 and it does look like this might have been copied from an old VHS tape.

That wouldn't be so bad if the film was good. Be in no doubt Abdullah Ibrahim is a very important African musician, whose mix of Jazz and African music is really amazing, and if you haven't heard his music I strongly recommend it (try 'Blues for a Hip King' on CD). Unfortunately this documentary does not spend enough time looking at the music and dwells on social and racial issues, which I concede were more important when the film was made in the 1980's. Nevertheless for reasons of quality and the lack of focus on music this was a disappointment.
