Doctor Who : Voyage Of The Damned - Christmas Special with Kylie [2007]

Amazon.co.uk Review

The 2007 Christmas special of Doctor Who, Voyage of the Damned is a rip-roaring, hugely entertaining adventure, whose pace, energy and ambition plasters over its undeniable cracks.

With David Tennant in the title role, and Doctor Who fan Kylie Minogue stepping into the role of his assistant, Astrid, the adventure picks up where the third series of the programme ended: with the Titanic crashing into the Tardis.

With the loose ends quickly resolved, Voyage of the Damned soon picks up its key threads. There's a futuristic Titanic spaceship, a cast of space tourists (with recognisable names from British television, such as Clive Swift and Geoffrey Palmer), and inevitably, impending disaster.

Voyage of the Damned then manages to inject fast action, better-than-expected special effects, and a surprisingly high body count. It's got cracks in its setup, and isn't bereft of flaws (not least a slightly inflated running time), but it is a whole lot of fun, and a great improvement on the previous year's special, The Runaway Bride. It's good, too, that in spite of Kylie Minogue's star billing, her character isn't allowed to dominate the story, and as a result she turns in good work, holding her own in an impressive cast.

In all, Voyage of the Damned is a fun, rewatchable adventure, with plenty in the tank to keep you entertained. Definitely worth picking up. --Simon Brew

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Terrible.......2008-03-13

While I am a huge fan of Doctor Who, I have to admit that I found this a total let down. The teaser at the end of series 3 had me really looking forward to settling down to a bit of Christmas Who but I was so let down. Christmas Invasion - Brilliant. The Runaway Bride - not as good. This??? ....what can I say. While I'm grateful for RTD bringing back the Doctor, I really think this guy should put his pen away and leave the writing to someone else.

2 out of 5 stars Verity Lambert Must Be Turning In Her Grave.......2008-03-09

VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED became the second most-watched TV programme of 2007, drawing 13.3 million viewers. But, it's one of the worst DOCTOR WHO stories. Prior to airing, this had potential to be another classic. Instead, it confirms the status the Russell T Davies is NOT the best writer of the new WHO-era (that honour goes to Steven Moffat).

The Starship Titanic, while visually-beautiful and authentic, is a carbon-copy of the one from the FUTURAMA (1999-????) episode, 'A Flight To Remember'. Some of the supporting characters, like the little red alien and the Van Hoff couple are likeable and well-performed. But sadly, they are underused, and when they are discarded, the viewers are left wondering why there were created in the first place.

The Hosts, are just gold-coloured versions of the Autons, dressed like angels and their weapons are a laughable concept. Geoffrey Palmer, who appeared in the 1970's serials - 'The Silurians' and 'The Mutants' - is wasted in a all-too brief role.

Max Capricon, when he appears in the climax, is one of the biggest embarrassments in the entire 45-year history of DOCTOR WHO. He is just a poorly-convinced Davros-meets-Cyber-Leader clone. And don't make go over the scenes with the Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Last, and certinaly the least, is Kylie Minogue. Despite all the media attention she got, Minogue, like most of the characters in this Christmas special, is underdeveloped. When she defeats the villain in the climax scene, there's no emotional content. And the Doctor, once again, becomes depressed having fallen in love, which is getting very annoying and dull.

The only good bits about VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED was Clive Swift's wonderful performance as Mr. Copper (Swift also appeared in 'Revelation Of The Daleks') and a cameo appearance from Bernard Cribbins, who will be returning in this year's season.

I don't know what Russell T Davies was thinking when he was writing the script. He's probably lost his enthusiasm for DOCTOR WHO. Maybe they should bring back the people who worked on the show during the 70's like Barry Letts, Terrance Dicks or Philip Hinchcliffe.

This was dedicated to the memory of Verity Lambert, who was the first ever producer on DOCTOR WHO, and passed away a month before this aired. But maybe it's best that she never saw VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED.

Despite this disappointment, I'm still looking forward to this year's season. As for Catherine Tate being the Doctor's new companion, I'm just hoping she won't ruined it like...ugh!...Bonnie Langford did back in the late 80's.

5 out of 5 stars Damned good.......2008-02-17

Oh my! There are a great deal of poor reviews on this dvd, aren't there? It is apparent some people just don't understand the meaning of fun. If you turn your nose up at the idea of a spaceship designed to resemble an old Earth ocean liner, than surely you are the sort of miseryguts who would deride monsters who look like tinpots and have whisks and sink plungers as weapons.
It appears that this episode was too silly in the eyes of many Who fans. Indeed, the main appetite seems to be for darker stories like those done by Steven Moffat and the brilliant 'human nature' episode but they can't always be like that. After a series (though it was fantastic) where the doctor was still a tragic figure after losing Rose, it is a pleasure to see him back in a more cheery episode and as a more cheery doctor. Good on Russell T. Davies for going against the cliche that darker stories are better. In fact, without Russell's writing where would we get wonderfully silly aliens like the Slitheen or the Mox of Balhoon?
'Voyage of the Damned' is a vintage Russell T. Davies episode, mixing the funny with the eerily wierd (a.k.a. the host). The actors do a fine job: as far as I'm concerned Kylie is the best assistant yet. I was interested to read in one of the other reviews that Madonna was originally meant for the role: it would certainly have given a whole new meaning to the Madonna being visited by a 'host' at Christmas time. I'm glad it didn't happen though!I've got nothing against Madonna but Kylie fitted into the role like a glove. Here's hoping she'll return!...her and the cybermen.

1 out of 5 stars Utter pants!.......2008-02-15

An utterly derivative, mind-numbingly boring, inane and childish Dr Who story. Possibly the worst episode to date. Kylie Minogue is simply terrible and her casting was clearly just a publicity stunt. Avoid at all costs!

1 out of 5 stars Desperate measures!.......2008-02-04

Looking more like amateur night at the church hall than a big budget TV show, this Christmas special did itself no favours by employing the services of the impossibly-sweet Kylie Minogue! Her acting "skills" (and I hate to use the word in vain) have definitely not improved with time and one would have to wonder what the producers were thinking when they considered her for the role! Quite frankly, her halcyon moment came and went 18 years ago, so attempting to recapture it on a cult TV show at Christmas time stinks of desperation! As a point of interest, the script was originally written with Madonna in mind, but when she very wisely snubbed it, Minogue's people were waiting in the wings like common street beggars to snap it up! They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, but feasting off other artists cast-offs is something else altogether!

In The Night Garden - Who's Here?

Amazon.co.uk Review

Chances are there's barely a parent of a toddler in the country who hasn't encountered In The Night Garden in some form over the past few months. The latest BBC-hit from the CBeebies channel, and with a passing resemblance to Teletubbies, this debut DVD for the show brings together five episodes. And many parents already, we suspect, will have their credit cards ready.

In true childrens' television tradition, In The Night Garden is often as alien to adults as it is compelling to its real target audience. But heck, do children love it. Accompanied by the gentle narration of Sir Derek Jacobi, it's billed a nursery rhyme picture book of sorts. This manifests itself in the shape of a wild mix of children and characters, who get up to a mixture of diverse and diverting activities.

And this is one of the many areas where In The Night Garden strikes gold. Not only does it have a distinctive and warm collection of characters, but it does have an educational undercurrent to it all. In short, it engages its target audience particularly well, and teaches them a little in the process.

The DVD is rounded off with special bonus footage and a parents' guide, but it's the five episodes that are set to be spun time and time again. And rightly so. Expect this to be the first DVD release of many, too, for a show with many, many years ahead of it. --Jon Foster

5 out of 5 stars blooming marvellous.......2008-02-13

wonderful. my 18 year old absolutely loves this programme. it keeps him quiet and contented and it just THE most perfect viewing after he's played with his superskunk. it sets him up nicely for some really intense hallucinations and out-there political opinion-forming. marvellous.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!!.......2007-12-07

Absolutely beautiful programme. Not sure whether I should be worrying more about my daughters eyesight as she stands an inch away from the screen so as not to miss anthing or the relationship between Iggle Piggle and Upsy Daisy.... (all that kissing, getting into Upsy Daisys bed and private rooms in the Pinky Ponk......!!!)

Took the dvd on holiday with us and we watched an episode each evening before bath as we do at home - worked a treat and she (generally!) went down without a problem.

Only hitch now, is she has figured out it is bath and bed after Night Garden so once the carousel comes on she immediately become very absorbed in "playing" with just half an eye on the programme so as not to miss anything but also to look very busy!!

Anyway, every under 3 should have this dvd - In the Night Garden on tap!!!

5 out of 5 stars This is What They Want.......2007-12-05

There is only one programme which helps to wind down the active toddler, and this DVD, if you miss the 6.30pm slot on CBeebies, is it. Great music too.

5 out of 5 stars Yes...his name is Iggle Piggle!.......2007-11-20

WOW! This is such a cool DVD....join Iggle Piggle, Upsy Daisy, Makka Pakka and the gang on their day to day shinanagans in the garden. The beautiful colours, sounds and storylines will keep your little one entertained. Unlike the teletubbies this has character and is enjoyable for parents as well....GO AND BUY IT YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO!!!!

2 out of 5 stars It's isn't SUCH a pip........2007-11-04

Like most of the parents reviewing below my two year old really likes the show although thankfully his attention is now starting to wander. I find some of the characters really quite disturbing - none more so than Upsy Daisy whose repeated mannerisms and little yelps and giggles are exceptionally irritating. The 'stories' don't seem to me to have much heart and the other squeaking repetitive characters annoy me considerably - especially when watching it for the 5 millionth time. And the perspective is very weird - how big are these characters relative to each other, it makes me dizzy.

But I fully accept that it's not meant to be for me. I just wish it really WAS as charming as some claim and something that I could actually enjoy watching with my kid rather than making me want to reach for the revolver every time I hear "Daisy Do" announcing the arrival of one of these distubing, incessantly kissing, non-humans hoving on screen. The Ninky Nonk is quite good particularly as they have done us the favour of not investing it with a "personality".

Doctor Who - The Five Doctors (25th Anniversary Edition) [1983]

Amazon.co.uk review

Celebrating 25 years since The Five Doctors was originally broadcast, this brand new double disc special edition is a real treat for new and old fans of the show. For not only is the adventure itself good fun, but the special features package is exceptionally strong too.

The story - broadcast to celebrate the-then 20th anniversary of Doctor Who - brings five incarnations of the Doctor together. Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee and Peter Davison return to their roles, while Richard Hurndall steps in for William Hartnell, and archive footage of Tom Baker is used to cover his decision not to take part in the story. The various generations of the Doctor are then, one by one, brought to the Time Lord's home planet Gallifrey, where they encounter many of their old assistants, and many of their deadliest foes.

The story of The Five Doctors proves to be as much a battle about giving everyone something to do, but Terrance Dicks' script does just that, and while it's not one of the Time Lord's very best adventures, it is an entertaining one.

The extra features package peaks with the assorted commentary tracks: there's one that brings together a series of Doctor Who assistants, another that unites writer Terrance Dicks with Peter Davison, and a hidden Easter Egg commentary where David Tennant, Phil Collinson and Helen Raynor take the microphone. Each is a fascinating listen, for differing reasons.

The Five Doctors DVD is then rounded off with a wide selection of archive material, and a 50-minute documentary looking at Doctor Who's birthday celebrations. And given the wealth of features there is to dig through, it's a release that'll be enjoyed for a long time after both the original and extended cut of the main feature have been viewed. A terrific release. --Simon Brew

4 out of 5 stars The 3½ Doctors but some cracking extras!.......2008-03-12

This story divides fandom like no other in many ways. Some dismiss it as too silly, implausible and certainly not a classic story, and a very camp pantomime. Other regard it a joyful celebration of all that was great about the series for its 20th Anniversary in 1983, and a glorious reunion of Doctors, companions and Monsters. I belong to the later camp.

Hats off to Terrance Dicks for coping with the near impossible task of constantly changing cast list (the great Bob Holmes had already attempted a "Six Doctors" story but pulled out saying the demands were too great).
Another challenge was what to do with the first and fourth Doctors. William Hartnell sadly had passed away in 1975, and Tom Baker, having originally agreed to take part in the production, then pulled out of the project. The first Doctor was recast as Richard Hurndall, who does, in my opinion bear more than just a passing resemblance to William Hartnell; whilst Tom Baker is represented in the story by the inclusion of a few short clips from the then unseen, unfinished Shada story of 1979.

In this 2 disc release, you get both the original transmission version of 1983, and the longer "Special Edition" cut of 1995, with new special effects, a Dolby 5.1 surround soundtrack and various scene changes. Both versions have been extensively restored by the Doctor Who restoration team, unlike the previous release of 2001, and there is a distinct absence of grain on the picture and particularly vivid colours throughout.

The celebratory feel of the story is really felt in the comprehensive and nostalgic set of extras on this DVD:

- Celebration - a documentary - presented by Colin Baker - recalling the making of, and publicity surrounding, the Five Doctors. It is nice to see the director, Peter Moffat, one last time before his death in 2007, and the anecdotes from Elisabeth Sladen, Peter Davison, Janet Fielding and the writer Terrance Dicks are highly entertaining and often amusing.

- The Ties that Bind Us is a much shorter documentary - narrated by the smooth tones of Paul McGann - looking at the Five Doctors' links to other Doctor Who story, with an excellent montage of clips to illustrate what it is that makes this show so special.

- A wonderful "Easter Egg" commentary by the current Doctor (David Tennant) and producer (Phil Collinson) and writer Helen Raynor. This has to be one of the most hilarious and entertaining commentaries to date, no doubt livened by the presence of champagne during recording, courtesy of 2entertain. Phil Collinson had me in stitches throughout, my only criticism is oddly enough of David Tennant who seems rather displeased with the choice of Richard Hurndall as the first Doctor.

- Clips from the publicity surrounding the series in 1983, from Breakfast Time, Blue Peter and Saturday Superstore.

- A comprehensive photo gallery and trailers/ continuities.

- Two further commentaries:
-Companions Commentary (a rather lacklustre affair compared to the Easter Egg one) with Liz Sladen, Nicholas Courtney, and Mark Strickson and Carol Ann Ford.
- Special Edition Commentary (a hilarious combination of writer Terrance Dicks and the Doctor, Peter Davison).

Probably the most comprehensive set of extras for a Doctor Who DVD release yet. Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the 20th anniversary in style with 3½ Doctors, a tipsy new series crew and more extras than you can wave a punt at!

5 out of 5 stars The "Greatest Easter Egg" - fantastic.......2008-03-07

I found the Easter Egg, with 2 Entertain's help. The "hidden Easter Egg commentary where David Tennant, Phil Collinson and Helen Raynor take the microphone" is fantastic...

5 out of 5 stars The Five Doctors - Great Balls of Fire!!!.......2008-03-05

The Five Doctors has always had a somewhat "iffy" reputation among the Who faithful, but for me it's always had it's own particular charm - which is why I for one am so pleased that it has been given this spectacular 2 disc release.

For me to the real stars of this show are Pat Troughton and Jon Pertwee, who give as much to the story as the incumbent Doctor Peter Davison. Richard Hurndall is none too shabby either as the First Doctor.

Many fans mourn the fact that Tom Baker did not participate, but it's just possible that he may have overshadowed the others - we'll never know now, but the inclusion of the then unseen Shada footage gives us a fleeting glimpse of his brilliance.

A classic? Possibly not to the hardcore Who fans, but certainly a highly enjoyable romp which ever version you choose to watch, plus more features than you can shake a scarf at! Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Great, worth upgrading.......2008-03-04

This a great dvd package and worth upgrading from the original release, lots of cool extra's which were absent first time around

4 out of 5 stars A great romp.......2008-03-02

25 years have passed since this milestone in British TV sci-fi. The actual 'five' weren't all there, but does it matter?

Extras first; this DVD contains two versions of the episode; a special edition containing some new SFX (nothing too mind-blowing) and is a slightly longer cut, and the original version as broadcast in 1983. There are various commentaries (I haven't listened to them all yet) including one by the companions, Peter Davison with Terrance Dicks, and a not-too-well-hidden Easter Egg in the form of a commentary by Phil Collinson, David Tennant and Helen Raynor from the current Doctor Who team. There's also a documentary on the Doctor Who continuity narrated by Paul McGann, another on the making of `The Five Doctors' presented by Colin Baker, as well as features from Nationwide, Saturday Superstore, the Longleat exhibition and studio out-takes. In short, there's plenty of stuff over the two discs to keep most Who fans amused for many moons.

Basically, the episode is an excuse for a Who's-Who of Doctor Who - barring Tom Baker (shown only in clips from the unreleased `Shada') and the deceased William Hartnell. For the remainder, it's time to get back into character. The story concerns the 5th Doctor returning to Gallifrey in order to become `whole', as his previous selves have been scooped up from their respective time streams and placed in the Death Zone as part of some nefarious plot. As far as bad guys go, the usual suspects are in place (mostly); there's a lone Dalek, a lone Yeti, the Master and a whole bunch of Cybermen.

The real appeal of an episode like this lies not with the power of the story, but with seeing the various Doctors do their stuff one more time. As a budding writer myself, I can only imagine the problems that lay before Terrance Dicks when trying to juggle the almost insane amount of leading and supporting characters in a episode like this. To his credit, he manages it well - especially considering that he managed to keep the 5th Doctor at the story's centre. But overall, this is not as strong a story as 1973's `The Three Doctors' as there simply seems to be less of an overall threat.

While I admire Dicks' writing skills, I feel he missed an opportunity in terms of serious emotional connection between the Doctors and the various companions. True, there is genuine joy when the Brigadier meets the 2nd Doctor again, and relief when Sarah-Jane is rescued (down a pathetic hill!) by the 3rd Doctor, but the differences in emphasis between the writers of the classic series and the writers of the current series become evident. The 5th Doctor shows almost no emotion when faced with the Brigadier and Sarah-Jane again; just compare that for a moment to the events of 'School Reunion' and all the joy, competetiveness, sorrow and memories that ensued. This is bad enough, but then neither he and the 2nd and 3rd Doctors even bat an eyelid at their own grand-daughter. Susan, who they would not have seen for an eternity. I can't help feeling that huge opportunities went amiss here. In a show which is basically an excuse for a get-together, the sense of reunion in the script was a bit lacking. This is something that the current writers would have probably exploited to the max.

Saying that, it was still good to see the old faces back in action. Richard Hurndall actually does more than just mimic William Hartnell; he captures the 1st Doctor's essence excellently (I pour scorn on David Tennant's commentary that he was `just a bloke in a wig' - a little unfair I think). Patrick Troughton, as always, is charm personified, but my first Doctor, and my favourite, was Jon Pertwee, and for me it's always a thrill to see him in action - plus he gets to use that famous line one more time! Also a nod to the always-excellent Anthony Ainley as the Master - terrific.

So, was it really `The Five Doctors' or `Doctor Who 3.5'? Whichever way it's viewed, this special commemorative episode is still a fine romp through the history of the most infamous Time Lord of them all.

4 out of 5 stars Torchwood is a winner.......2008-03-13

If you like the new Dr Who series, Torchwood cannot be missed. I have decided to visit Cardiff next autumn just to see if these places really exist. This is not to be compared with War and Peace or even Inspector Morse, but it all seems to be well planned and there is always something unexpected cropping up. It is possible that nobody over 40 will understand what's going on (except for me).

5 out of 5 stars Better than ever..........2008-03-12

I have to say it is disappointing that some people are still criticising Torchwood for the gay scenes - dear me I think it is time to join the rest of us in the 21st Century where (gasp) there are same sex relationships.

Still: to the res. This is a massive improvement on the occasionally uneven first season, the writing is sharper and wittier and because they are easing up on the SFX it is not over-reliant of CG (which occasionally marred the last season). Even better then that there are some real laughs in this series.

The 'special guests' have also fit in well - like it's sister show Doctor Who - they are not simply wheeled in for the sake of it. Alan Dale is nicely sinister (how far he has come from Ramsey Street) and James Marsters looks to be having enormous fun as Captain John.

So ignore the naysayers and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Give It A Go........2008-03-12

Let me first start off by saying Torchwood is nonsense but to me that's what good SF should be. For many a years the genre was hijacked by pompus right wing America churning out endless soap opera disguised as SF. This culminated in shows like Battlestar Gallactica, endless dirge in the name of Star Trek and Buffy(the thinley disguised schoolgirl fetish nerd fest that inspired a whole generation to speak in awful broken English) The Vampire Slayer. The makers of the later did give us the fantastic Firefly which only lasted one series as it featured irony, acting, plots and various other stuff that your average Buffy lover could not comprehend.
Sorry for ramblig a bit but Torchwood at it,s best matches the X Files at it's worst Hollyoakes. First and foremost Torchwood is fun and has the feel of old sci fi B movies and at least it's not anal, but there are a few refrences to it. So if your tired of the eternal good and evil struggle this is the show for you all the charachters are flawed and the show is all the better for it. How about an episode in the near future that involves some Buffy fans stuck in their one dimension?

1 out of 5 stars A missed opportunity.......2008-03-09

What a shame that RTD thinks that creating an 'adult' Sci-fi is simply a case of dressing up juvenile and derivative plots with a dose of cross gender sex, bad language and violence. This show is not clever and I am sad that it has any link at all with the Doctor Who universe, in my opinion it just damages the franchise.

This second season is no better than the first, quite possible because of a). the tiresome pushing of the gay agenda, and b). an uninspiring, badly acted set of characters that leave you simply not caring about them enough to carry the show. If there was a zero star rating, then this would have got it. It is a wasted chance to have given us some proper adult sci-fi with intellectually challenging plots and realistically drawn characters.

A shame this rubbish was green lighted for a second season, wasting more license payers money, and budget that could have been spent on more deserving projects.

1 out of 5 stars Embarassing and juvenile.......2008-03-06

Someone here called this "mould-breaking". Hilarious! If there's a more derivative, hackneyed and badly acted programme currently airing then it must be another RTD project that I don't know about. For a forty+ year old writer his SF projects demonstrate an incredibly immature attitude towards sex with no opportunity missed to jam in more inappropriate smut. It's hard to care too much as even without the clumsy and boring sex the remainder of the show is so painfully unoriginal that it's surgical removal wouldn't help matters. I feel shame this kind of bilge is what we give the Americans when they have provided us with The X Files, Battlestar Galactica, Buffy amongst many other genre classics. Speaking of Buffy, James (Spike) Marsters hasn't done his rep any good by appearing in this rot with his performance in the early episodes being toe-curlingly awful. I'll be generous and blame the script but in which case you have to wonder why he agreed to do it. Painful to watch.

Someone please call time on Russell T[he Emperor's New Clothes] Davies.

4 out of 5 stars "The Clown at the Cricket Match".......2008-03-11

Sorry but that's the best faux Agatha Christie title I can come up with. Story review only until the DVD is released, but I can say it's a good 'un. Easily the best of the Davison 2-parters this one plays like it was written to be 2 parts from the start and not 4 parts edited down to 2 as the others appear to be.
It's a little Agatha Christie due to a slight murder mystery and the lack of sci-fi apart from the tardis. It is not wholly about the mystery and the culprit's unmasking as the tardis crew are actually seen enjoying themselves for once.

A charming tale with a few nods to whodunnit conventions such as the Doctor's stolen clown costume leading to him becoming a suspect. There is some wit here with a joke about the Master and the obligatory reaction to seeing the tardis.
They all get to dress up and Nyssa takes centrestage as her resemblance to Ann Talbot plays a part in the story.

The regular and guest cats all give good performances, light and right for the story.

A budget release patterned on the Tim Meddler, we are offered a "Stripped for Action" about the 5th Doctors comicbook adventures (I wonder what they'll say abiout Mick Austins'artwork!) and restoration featurette.

There is also a vintage Blue Peter feature and deleted scenes. No word on who'll be dong the commentary yet.

Recommended for all Who fans unless they only like effects and monster heavy stories.

Black Orchid is something of a rare flower amongst the Doctor Who stories broadcast during the 1980s. It is only the story within this decade not to contain any alien aspects (apart from The Doctor, two of his companions and The Tardis). As with the later Terror of the Vervoids, this story clearly takes its influence from the novels of Agatha Christie. The story is set in the 1920s within a huge country house in which a murderer is stalking the corridors and threatening to spoil teh fun at a lavish ball.
As with an Agatha Christie novel, there are plenty of twists and turns.
The Doctor and his companions arrive in 1920s England and are mistaken for participants at a cricket match to take place near to where The Tardis lands. Despite the implausability of this, the cricket match offers a chance to see the new Doctor indulging in his favourite sport and helping to justify his choice of regualr outfit.
In a fairly diverse season, this adventure was broadcast prior to the excellent Earthshock and excluding the cricket scenes, the story unfolds under a much slower pace than the action packed story that followed.
The story also gives companion Nyssa more of a role, and it is easy to see this was one of the favourites of actress Sarah Sutton. Davison is excellent as usual as The Doctor and is backed by a good supporting cast.
This is worth watching on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars A Quiet Little Gem.......2008-02-29

Black Orchid was the fifth story to feature Peter Davison's Doctor and was notable for being a two-parter and the series first historical story since the Patrick Troughton days.

Now we Doctor Who fans can recite and quote all the facts and figures of any story, including this one, but what is so special about Black Orchid is that it is one of the very few stories that does not have to be watched with any appreiciation of science fiction, because apart from the TARDIS and the regular line up of characters there are no sci-fi elements at all, and that adds to the enjoyment enormously as it was quite a change of direction for the show at the time.

The whole story has a Sunday afternoon play of the week kind of feel, revolving around a type of Agatha Christie style murder mystery and is perfect for members of the casual viewing audience whom may not be interested in sci-fi but want a nice easy, pleasant hour of viewing.

It's ironic that Peter Davison himself does not like the story when this was the adventure where he finally shook off the shadow of Tom Baker and truly found his own interpretation of the part, he is very much in the minority as it is generally loved by almost everyone.

This was my favourite story in that crucial first year of Davison's and the fact that it was up against blockbusting Cybermen stories and more expensive shows and the first story of the fifth Doctor says a lot.

I have seen a provisional list of extras but as they have not been confirmed as such, I will leave their description to my fellow reviewers.

This is a huge thumbs up for the more quiet, gentle and character based stories of Doctor Who, to be enjoyed mainly for that reason, as there are not many of those in the original series.

Amazon.co.uk Review

Most have agreed that the BBC's decision to revive Doctor Who has proven inspired, with the Christopher Ecclestone-led 'first' series proving a critical and ratings success. Yet when Ecclestone announced he was departing the role after just one season, eyebrows were raised. Could the momentum be kept going for a second series?

Absolutely. The seamless casting of David Tennant as Ecclestone's successor in the TARDIS has been equally inspired, and while it's a fair debate as to whether he matches the standards set by his predecessor, the show rarely lets you draw breath to think about.

This second series collection kicks off with the 2005 Christmas special, which finds the Doctor struggling to overcome the effects of his regeneration, just as the Earth happens to be invaded. It's a smashing episode, and much of the thirteen that follow manage to match it. Particular highlights? There's "School Reunion", which cleverly works old favourites K-9 and Sarah-Jane back into the mix, while "The Girl In The Fireplace" finds the Doctor in a slightly more romantic frame, "The Idiot's Lantern" is a super, snappy episode set just before Coronation Day, while the two part "Impossible Planet" and "Satan Pit" shows just how far you can stretch a BBC budget.

Yet the series will ultimately be remembered for different reasons. The triumphant return for the Cybermen for one, and the depature of Billie Piper's Rose Tyler in the superb final two-parter, which also happens to see two of the Doctor's deadliest foes waging war. And while it's not unfair to say that this series of Doctor Who hasn't been without one or two low moments too, the vast majority of it has been really quite brilliant. Fast, energetic, well-written and cracking entertainment, you're only left wondering how they can top all this next time round… --Simon Brew

3 out of 5 stars Good, but in my opinion, the weakest of the three so far.......2008-02-21

Lots of reviews here are making series two out to be mind blowing, with the exception of a few. In my opinion, this has actually been the weakest of the three "new who" series so far.

The latest series (three) has maintained a good quality throughout and Ok so series one has the odd poor episode here and there- like boom town, or perhaps the slitheen episodes, but moving on to series two and we see an abundance of not so good episodes.

We have zombies infected with "every disease in existence", the doctor and rose being chased by a computer graphic warewolf and making jokes about the queen which quickly become annoying. Later on, we get monsters who look like their mouths are made from minced beef, and a living doodle. The episode "love and monsters", the actual input of the doctor and rose is about as much as being seen chased around "scooby doo style" as the rest of the episode is someones life story, would have been harmless fun, had it have been a spin-off, rather than a proper part of the series.

Thankfully, there where a few reasons to still tune into this series, as it is saved (once again) by the inclusion of old enemies/allies. The cybermen, daleks, K-9 and Sarah Jane Smith all make welcome appearances, in what is otherwise a series that was quickly losing appeal.

Considering however, we are looking at a price of nearly £40, I would much rather cherry pick from the individual "vanilla" releases, and avoid forking out for what is overall, a very up and down series.

5 out of 5 stars The best series yet!.......2008-01-14

Series 2 of Doctor Who is brilliant because:
1.All the stories are great
2.They are all very entertaining
3.The cast is brilliant, of course David and Billie are excellent
4.And finally Doomsday has a very good ending which you would never be able to think of!

Like I said Doomsday is the best story of them all and has a very gripping ending

Overall,10/10

1 out of 5 stars Better than series one but still not really cutting it........2007-12-27

The original Doctor Who was about ideas. That has gone. The original series lasting for 27 years manage to keep the feeling, mantras, and backstrory/culture(mostly). In this revamp all that is thrown away. This is worse even than the Peter Cushing movies for losing the plot. Science Fiction is escapism. The more you try to bring in gitty reality and ordinary people's unbalanced personalities, the more it becomes something else. In science fiction you travel to other worlds. In this, you never leave Earth (unless its to go to New Earth or New New Earth). Aliens are replaced by horror movie products such as were-wolves or the devil or zombies. I guess this is what happens as our society because more "educated" but less aware of what science is about. The so called "high-points" of all the series so far is to bring back old creatures for the classic series. Without that this series would have almost no new ideas. I have kept watching these series as I have always been a Doctor Who fan but without the name it would just be a fusion of James Bond and bad horror. The creators of this series eliminated all the back-story from the previous series (ie. the other Timelords, Gallifrey etc). This series has better stories (mostly) than series one but is still dragged down by Billy Piper's poor acting. Once again this series relies on bringing back something from the classic series to keep interest from old fans who might otherwise turn off in disgust. This time it is Liz Sladen and cybermen. The cybermen are rubbish versions of the original. For me, growing up with Doctor Who, the cybermen were unforgettable. They were human and yet not - alive but somehow soul-less. The new ones are just metal machine men. Amazing how the same idea can become a legend in one situation and forgettable rubbish in another.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant series........2007-11-04

This is an amazing series of Dr Who. So far there have been three seasons of the show released on dvd, and this is my favourite by far, it is consistently brilliant, and the episodes are so enjoyable. If you want a series to get you hooked to this show, this is where to look.

Episodes:The episodes on this dvd are all so brilliant that it is hard to pick favourite, but I do have a few favourites, they are, Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday, The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, The Girl In The Fireplace, and School Reunion. None of the episodes are bad, but the episodes I remember enjoying least are Fear Her, and Love And Monsters, they aren't terrible episodes, but I think they were quite dissapointing.

The Cast:The cast is equally good as the last one, and the originally I was unhappy with the introduction of David Tennant to the role of the Doctor, but now I think I prefer him in the role than Christopher Eccleston, but I do think Christopher Eccleston was great in the role. Billie Piper is just as good as she was in the first series, which means she was great and it was sad to see her departure in the final episode. The co-stars, Camille Codouri and Noel Clarke, also continue to be great, and there are also some great actors in the individual episodes.

If you want the consistently best ( so far ) of an amazing show, then buy this series, you will not be dissapointed.

4 out of 5 stars A really good series.......2007-09-29

A good series with some good extras. The outakes are funny. The series is good. A good boxset. If you like Doctor Who you'll like this. I think the best in the series is Doomsday. The worst is.... there is none. A really good boxset of a good series.

Amazon.co.uk Review

There were a few moments in the third season of the revived Doctor Who when you begin to wonder if the bubble has burst. A couple of tepid Dalek episodes, and a handful of forgettable stories, make you begin--perhaps for the first time since the show's revival--whether it's already hits its peak.

But never underestimate the new Doctor Who. For the back run of series three is as good as anything that's gone before it, with ingenious plotting, the clever layering of elements it casually--nah, crucially--refers to later on, and some quite superb individual episodes. It not only restores any hint of lost faith, it sets the bar even higher.

Examples? The stunning single story Blink is extremely clever, genuinely scary and has immense rewatch value. While the equally strong double-header of Human Nature and The Family Of Blood is a two-parter in the traditional Doctor Who way, building up its story in a measured and really effectively creepy way.

Then there's the finale. Presenting the Doctor with one of his finest, most ingenious villains makes for quite brilliant television (albeit with a slightly underwhelming concluding episode), as exciting to long-time fans of Doctor Who as it is for the newcomers.

And that, ultimately, is the brilliance of Doctor Who. It staggers so many levels of viewer enthusiasm, appeals to an extremely broad age demographic, and woos over fans new and old in a manner that no show currently on television can manage. And while the cliché of hiding behind the sofa may not be as accurate as it once was, Doctor Who season three will undoubtedly leave you gripped to the TV. --Simon Brew

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as seasons 1 or 2, but still entertaining.......2008-03-07

As other reviewers have said before, there are some poor episodes and some great episodes in this season. David Tennant is still brilliant as the doctor, but is notably subdued throughout this whole season. Martha is ok as his companion, but lacks the fun, quick witted attributes of Rose. The episode '42' just seems like a badly rehashed version of 'The Impossible Planet.' David Tennant's unhappy silence at the end of the episode, where he seems to be remembering the adventures he had with Rose on the impossible planet seem to confirm that there is something lacking. The whole season is less sharp, less funny and the storylines are generally not as good but overall still entertaining. Worth watching for episodes such as 'Blink.' Four stars for David Tennant, but only three stars for the writing in the first half of the season and for his new companion!

5 out of 5 stars Quite simply amazing.......2008-02-19

Barcode: 5014503238520

The return of Doctor Who to the BBC is one of the best things ever to happen in modern television. It is by far the best programme on at the moment and while the first two series were already excellent - series three blows them out of the water. It's ability to move the viewer is incredible, the production value resulting in a veritable piece of eye candy and every episode is directed and scripted wonderfully to result in a finished product that is simply beautiful.

Far more consistent in quality than the last two series here's what i think of each of the episodes of series three.

1. Smith & Jones - 9.5/10
Introduces the gorgeous Martha, by far a better companion than Rose and it clear from this first episode how amazing her and The Doctor's chemistry together is. The idea of the hospital in space is just genius, this is a high paced episode that never lets down the suspense.

2. The Shakespeare code - 9.5/10
Nice to see some more episodes set in the past like this one, Shakespeare and the witches are beautifully acted, i love the whole look and feel of this episode.

3. Gridlock - 9.5/10
Some heavy themes of hope such like going on in this episode, again, brilliant imagery and we see the return of the face of Bo (not actually one of my favourite characters but he role is shown to be vital later in the series)

4 & 5. Dalek's in Manhattan & Evolution of the Daleks - 9.5/10
A lot of people don't like these episodes but i love them - while the theme of the Daleks continuing to 'just escape' is getting pushed a little far now they are always effective villains. The idea of the Dalek's evolving and beginning to express emotion is extremely powerful as is the sub-plot of the romance between Talulah and Lazlowe.

6. The Lazarus Experiment - 8/10
This and the next episode, 42 feel kinda like buffer episodes between the two awesome 2-parters in this series. The theme of aging/rejuvenation is done well but the plot is a touch too simplistic.

7. 42 - 7.5/10
The unfortunate worst episode in the series - that said, it is far from bad though. It is important to stress that these two episodes here do not let the series down, when viewed as a whole instead of in weekly chunks it is simply part of the amazing 'Doctor Who Series 3 experience'.

8 & 9. Human Nature & The Family of Blood - 10/10
The beginning of the perfect second half of the series. The idea of the Doctor as a human and fearing to return to his Timelord self and leave behind nurse Redfern is heartbreaking. Baines is a terrifying villain in his arrogance and clipped commands. The scene where the school takes up arms against the scarecrows in the light of the coming war is incredibly moving.

10. Blink - 10/10
It needs to be said, Sally Sparrow is one of the most instantly likable and amazing characters in Doctor Who ever. Her interaction with the Doctor across time by way of the DVD easter eggs is done to perfection and the stone angels are scary as hell.

11, 12 & 13. - Utopia, The Sound Of Drums & Last of the Time Lords
The epic three-parter that closes the series, from the far-future to modern times gone wrong this is drama of the highest quality. Sees the welcome return of Jack whose inability to die doesn't seem like a cheat at all - instead he becomes, like the Doctor says 'a fact' - that being his reasuring constant presence alongside the viewer. John Simm is brilliantly evil and eccentric as the Master.

And with all that said, words still don't do it justice. Freema as Martha is amazing and i am so sad to see her leave after only one series, come back please! David as the Doctor is amazing, please don't ever go! If you think you don't like Doctor Who then i emplore you to watch this series - you will fall in love with the characters, the worlds and most of all you will know in your heart that Doctor Who is truly the finest thing on TV ever.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!!.......2008-01-28

Great DVD.I love Doctor Who. I think the DVDs are good and the special features are great.

5 out of 5 stars Quite possibly the best series of the three modern series........2008-01-24

Series one is all about rose and her interaction with the doctor's universe, which is brilliant and as the doctor would say fantastic.
Series two just the fantastic chemistry between billie piper and david tennent leading to the events of the series finale are excellent.
I think series three is the best because it is about the doctor's story getting concrete glimpses into what makes his character tick.
Smith and Jones - the first episode of the series is the best series opener by a long way. great monsters great performances, film like special effects fast and frantic an ideal opening to the series.
The Shakespeare Code - a perfect contrast and a belter of a performance for the actor who plays shakespeare.
Gridlock - on my favs , brilliant special effects great acting from tennent and finally more and more stuff about the doctor starts to come out.
Daleks in new york / evolution of the daleks - a solid two parter that i think is much better in the second episode. I was never a big fan of the daleks in the old series , but everytime they appear a cracking story always makes an appearence as well.
The Lazarus eperiment - great acting and sparring from tennent and mark gatiss as lazarus in this one.
42 - the weakest episode i think but still plenty to enjoy including shocking and quite possibly the best piece of acting from tennent in the series so far oh and i almost forgot jaw dropping special effects as well.
Human nature / the familly of blood - a different kind of doctor who tale but very good never the less other people i know thought this was perhaps the best who ever so it's appeal is possibly broadened by these two eps.
Blink - terriyfying. Steven moffat the writer comes up with another gem. He did quite possibly the best modern episode ever series two the girl in the fireplace and this is another belter eventhought the doctor is not the star on screen or is he?
The last three episodes are an excellent cruscendo to the series where an old foe comes bank to see the doctor as well as an old friend.
Series three a must for science fiction fans and more importaintely anyone who is a fan of just plain great telly. Telly where the lengh of episode is only forty five minutes but the serie has got even grander and filmaic. Quite simply fantastic!

4 out of 5 stars A good season.......2008-01-14

Series 3 is a series which had some good stories and some bad stories. Some of the good ones are Blink,Utopia and Last of the Timelords. Some of the bad stories are The Shakespeare Code and the two Dalek stories.

Overall a good season with some good stories and some bad- 8/10

Amazon.co.uk Review

The return of The Master has been one of the many recent triumphs of Doctor Who. And with this, the final single DVD release of season three of the show, the three concluding episodes deliver John Simm's majestic take on one of the Doctor's deadliest and oldest enemies.

These three episodes also see Torchwood's Captain Jack Harkness rejoining the Tardis, and along with the Doctor and Martha, there's a mighty battle to be fought.

It all starts with "Utopia", one of the very finest episodes of Doctor Who's third season. This is a clever, slow-burning tale, with Derek Jacobi guest-starring, and it features a final ten minutes so good it's enough to make Who fans weep. Things continue with some style in "The Sound Of Drums", where The Master really comes into his own, replete with a devastating cliffhanger to set up the season finale. And ironically, it's that finale, "The Last Of The Time Lords", that's the weakest of the three here, a slightly muddled--but still very enjoyable--wrapping up of a very strong series.

The skill of these three episodes is how cleanly they interweave with the subtle building blocks that have been put in place for them over the duration of Doctor Who's run. And with an ending the bodes well for the 2007 Christmas special too, this DVD is further proof of just what strong shape Doctor Who is in. Cracking stuff. --Jon Foster

1 out of 5 stars RTD is a curse to Doctor Who and needs removing.......2008-01-18

Russel T. Davies cannot write, full stop,
and if you think he can write a good story you obviously don't know what good tv is, try watching 'lost' or 'life on mars' and see how a good story is written,

RTD proves once again (and he's done this with every end of season finale since doctor who started) that he's the king of the anti-climax, he'll build a story up and up and up, and then when we're all waiting for a very clever and enjoyable ending he can't think of one and comes out with the most simple dumbass solution that leaves you feeling cheated, and ruining doctor who

what i liked:
John Simm - good master (and actor)
Derek Jacobi - good master (and actor)

what i didn't:
- the episode - last of the time lords
- John Barrowman, annoying in life and annoying on the screen
- the lack of the doctor being the doctor - the doctor being turned into an old man and then into Golumn from lord of the rings - what is the point of that
- that no one else can see how badly written and poorly plotted a season finale it was

5 out of 5 stars John Simm IS the Master.......2007-10-07

The third series of the new Dr Who has had ups and downs but the finale was fantastic! I loved the finale to series 2 with the Daleks and Cybermen but this totally tops that even with the ever annoying martha.
The reason for this brillance? John Simm. He is amazing, good looking, funny and plays the master just right. His first real episode the second last one "The sound of drums" is the best. David Tennant plays his part perfectly but John simm steals the show - thanks to some bril writing. The last episode lacks something especially as the Dr takes a back seat for the episode to Martha (who is awful) but its still one of the most memorable episodes to date.
If the whole series had been written and cast as well as the last three episodes it would have been by far the best series yet!

2 out of 5 stars And it started so well ...........2007-10-04

The return of the Master was brilliant, with the first two episodes really building up the tension and excitement and the cliff hanger with the Dr caught by the Master was excellent. But what happened next:

The master just overacted,
The Dr sat around
Martha walked around
Captain Jack hung around

Until the awful Dr/Christ the redeemer ending with the very last scene taken from the 1980's Flash Gordon film.

The last Dr Who series has been very patchy in its quality and its strengths and limitations have been demonstrated in this story arc

5 out of 5 stars Oh dear... Dad's gone mental again..........2007-09-21

Oh yes. OH PLEASE!

Do it again. Thats right... just... above the left shoulder.

That's it.

AAAGGGHHH!

I have to say that I enjoyed the "Sound of drums" episode so much that at the end of it I needed to locate a box of tissues and take a run around the block. I just cannot apologise enough for such ridiculous behavior, except to say that now there are several people on the list to whom I would gladly fall at the feet of, send my underwear to and pay undying hommage to - and John Simm has now entered that charmed circle. His performance as the master is so stupifyingly brilliant that I feel - reborn - just by watching it!

But why? The bloke is off his face! He's MAD! He's EVIL!

So why do I desperately want to be like him?

This is perhaps the genius of the writing. I couldn't come up with this if you packed me into a 4 by 4 closet with unlimited pizza and a typewriter and the occasional conjugal visit. It simply would not happen. I know my limitations all too well, but in fact RT Davis has got my number and is simply rubbing this in my face now.

I realized that this whole season was remarkable from the beginning. I hadn't really enjoyed the Cybermen from the last series taking over London, but cleverly, it only seemed like TV after the usual time line re-embedding, but this season was wonderful. Space Rhinos. Shakespeare! The old Rugged cross (which had me quite literally sobbing for joy), stone statues, big crab monsters, cat women, public school boys, hair dying machines, giant cockroaches, gas attacks on the British cabinet, the sky splitting asunder to Voodoo Child, and... did I mention the Rhinos?

This series has hit highs that I could not have possibly anticipated, Martha Jones hits that spot every time, and John Simm is mad in only a way that I can fantasise about.

Because I'm really quite sensible. Honestly.

Really.

I promise....

5 out of 5 stars Great three episodes!!.......2007-09-04

These episodes are brilliant, the first one "Utopia", which has the return of Captain Jack and the Master, is when the Doctor travells to the end of the universe. This is a great episode with a great cliffhanger.(9/10)
The Second episode "Sound of the Drums" is a follow on to "Utopia" but is set in London. We found out that the Master is Prime Minister of Great Britain. This is a great episodes, it's funny and a good story.(10/10)
The third and final episode of the series named "Last of the Timelords" is a great, exciting, thrilling episode. The Master has fully taken control in this episode, although it doesn't go to plan.(10/10)
I strongly recommend you buy this.(Overall:10/10)

Doctor Who - The Time Meddler [1965]

Amazon.co.uk Review

One of the most popular adventures from the William Hartnell era of Doctor Who, The Time Meddler pits the Time Lord against Carry On star Peter Butterworth in an entertaining, well-written adventure.

Set in England back in 1066, on the eve of the Battle of Hastings, The Time Meddler sees the Doctor drawn to a monastery where a single monk resides. So how come the singing of the monks can be heard from far away? And what's the reasoning behind the modern utensils he discovers? All paths lead to the aforementioned Butterworth, whose character's backstory adds a nice twist to the story.

The Time Meddler throws in the backstory of Jamie discovering the world of time travel for the first time, but it's the sparring between Hartnell and Butterworth that provides the sparks. And while it's not a perfect adventure, The Time Meddler is very entertaining, and a nice slice of classic Doctor Who.

Poignantly, the late Verity Lambert joins an intelligent, interesting commentary track in the highlight of the disc's extras. The Time Meddler was the last Doctor Who story she produced, and her contribution to the supplementary features package is both interesting and a fitting tribute to her work. It also helps make a very strong release for fans of classic Doctor Who. --Simon Brew

3 out of 5 stars Did it really happen like this?.......2008-02-19

Not the best on offer but this story has a lot going for it. And if you look hard enough, I'm sure you'll find it. Look, this is the first story that suggested the Doctor and the TARDIS were in no way unique. It must have been quite a surprise in its day when our heroes enter another TARDIS, and a fully functional one at that. This was Verity Lambert's final outing as producer. It's also the first of the sci-fi based historical shows, and an inter
