Rose tinted specs.......2007-10-01
I remember thinking this movie was fantastic when I was a child and my five year old daughter is now loving it just as much as I did. However, I do not have any memory of the ponies' voices being so high-pitched, screechy and fingernails-down-a-blackboard annoyingly hideous! Whilst I was delighted to see it again for the sake of nostalgia, I now have to leave the room when my daughter puts it on for the twentieth time...
Vintage cartoon but bad DVD.......2007-02-04
This is a classic cartoon from the eighties and I bought it for my kids having enjoyed it as a child myself. I must admit to being a little bit disappointed with the quality of the DVD itself. The movie is great just as I remembered, catchy songs, great voices and likeable characters but they have not 'cleaned' up the DVD. It's worse than on a VHS copy and really bad sound. There are absolutely no extras apart from 'Play' and 'Scene Selection' which is a shame. But at the price it's worth it. The kids have been watching it over and over.
Fun film. Terrible DVD........2005-03-12
I love how Hasbro are treating the My Little Pony line now. Not only are the new line of toys poor quality (have you ever had a Pony with nice hair out of the box? Or a Pony without a factory flaw?), but so is this DVD. It plays badly and it looks like it was just re-recorded from VHS. The cover of this DVD is also poorly done, with cheap artwork and awful grammar mistakes in the vague summary on the back.
I have a well-loved VHS copy of this film from my youth and it's in better shape than this DVD. What does that tell you?
Cheap and tacky DVD aside this is a fun film. Not the greatest script or animation wise, but it's still a nice nostalgia trip. The songs stay with you for a lifetime, and you can't help but feel the jealously rising once more as Megan plays with her Pony friends and you are trapped on the other side of the television screen.
In conclusion: Great nostalgia, awful DVD.
Nostalgic memories - my little pony.......2004-05-14
I loved this movie to bits when i was a kid and was really pleased to see it for sale again. Kids now will enjoy this animation movie just as much as I did nearly twenty years ago!
The ponies are in trouble and during the story, life lessons are taught to children in a natural way - unlike some animation today which seems to have no purpose or imagination. Also adults of my age group will appreciate rewatching this memorable movie!
more than a plastic toy.......2003-11-25
Little girls love anything to do with ponies, especially if they're long-haired, pink and glittery, so this film would have done well even if it hadn't been any good. But it is. What other reviewers haven't mentioned yet is that it's packed with excellent songs - far more than a Disney movie has - just for the fun of it. The best characters are the brilliantly funny witch, Hydia, and her two daughters, who just aren't evil enough to be a credit to the family. Wait till you see the scene where Hydia threatens the girls with the ultimate punishment - making them eat ice cream. I'm so glad this video is still available from Amazon.com. We hired it in Australia when my daughters were tiny, and have been overcome by a smooze-like wave of nostalgia on finding it again.

My little pony in modern animation........2007-02-16
I bought this for a 'my little pony' mad 2 year old, she liked watching it purely because she likes ponies, however I did not like it. The modern animation is cheap looking and the storylines are shallow and pedantic. The ponies have no real personality. The modern pony cartoons/dvd's are made cheaply with no effort.
What really, really annoyed me about this 'Runaway Rainbow' dvd is when you put it on you have to choose which language to play it in and 'Dutch' is the first language on the menu, so you have to mess about and scroll down to choose 'English' every time you want to play it.
I have now bought from amazon the old skool 'my little pony' cartoons of the 1980's on dvd, they have much better animation, storylines and morals. They are much more healthy and educational for a young child to watch and enjoy.

A pretty good sequel to the movie........2005-03-17
You shouldn't judge a DVD by it's cover, and that holds very true for this one in particular. Look past the scary-looking, round-nosed ponies, and you will actually find a really enjoyable movie. Originally televised as a ten-part My Little Pony episode, it has everything you'd expect from the first couple of series; Nancy Cartwright as Gusty(hooray!), Bushwoolies, Fizzy, Spike, an annoyingly-voiced baby pony, and even a late cameo from Megan (of course!).
The plot begins some time after the events of the movie, (so I would suggest watching that first if you don't want to be horrendously spoiled), with a bunch of Little Ponies (and Spike) on their way to visit the Flutter Ponies, a bunch of fairy-like ponies with gauzy wings who live in a lush green valley called, imaginatively enough(!), Flutter Valley. I shan't reveal too much here, but the villains from the Movie are in persuit of the ponies, seeking revenge for their defeat, and in doing so, enlist the help of some other local baddies...
The animation is lovely throughout, bar the odd few 'quirks' (things randomly changing colour in the middle of a scene, one of the adult ponies speaking Baby Cuddles' lines, mud disappearing in the blink of a frame), but I think these little things add to the film's charm, somehow. This is a really sweet film, and a nice return to the proper My Little Pony series. It's a shame there are no special features, as I'd have loved to have seen some of the storyboard sketches or original reels, but the film is priced accordingly, and the film doesn't lose anything because of it.

Pigs and Princesses.......2006-04-13
'The Glass Princess' is a really testing featurette with a hard to find moral which is either; everyone is special or consider others. Porcina is a pig with a mission, she wants everything to turn to glass to reflect her image. Her magic cloak gives her the power to do this however it is torn so she sends her goons to find some magic material to mend it with. Their choice; little pony hair. With her new cloak Porcina turns Ponyland into glass so it is up to Megan and the ponies to save the day. Nice idea but Porcina and especially her goons are very VERY annoying. Also the animation on this featurette is not as good as on some of the others.
'The Quest for the Princess Ponies' is a charming tale teaching us to be glad of what we have and that friends come in all forms. Spike the dragon stumbles upon the Princess ponies who are in the middle of a big fight to decide who will be queen. The fight doesn't last for long though as a lava demon comes and kidnaps the princesses to steal their magic wands. It is now up to the princesses to work together and over come their fears to stop the lava demon and regain their wands.
Both stories come with some very cute songs.
Just as i remember.......2006-03-25
This dvd shows my little pony at is best. its just as i rember it especaily the princess ponies episodes!
Cute but slightly irritating.......2006-01-10
This is a nice DVD for children adults will find the ponies voices extremley irritating after about 5 minutes). These two stories (both split into four parts) are about the ponies originally released in the 1980's. The glass princess sees Molly and Shady helping their friends break the spell that has turned Ponyland to glass. In The Quest of the Princess Ponies the Lava Demon steals the Magic Wands from the Princess Ponies, and the adventure begins as the ponies try to return order to ponyland. A must for My Little Pony fans.

The Coins are Magic but the Lights are not so Bright.......2006-04-13
'The Magic Coins' is a charming story with the morals, be careful what you wish for! and it is always good to have friends. The Baby Sea Ponies find a chest full of magic coins that the ponies begin to wish on with strange consequences, one causing the whole of Ponyland to dry up of water! It is now up to Megan and the ponies to reverse the powers of the coins and spread a bit of friendship along the way.
'Bright Lights' is a rather cheesey tale of forgiveness. Megan takes the baby ponies to see a singer called Knight Shade, a pony unmistakably based on Prince. The baby ponies will do anything for him and end up getting kidnapped by his evil zebra manager! Throw in some evil rats, a giant mousetrap and a briefcase that sucks up shadows and it is once again up to Megan and the ponies to save the day and the shadows of Knight Shades other fans.
Both stories come with some very cute songs.

Hurray! The 1st MLP movie since the 1980s!.......2006-01-08
Brilliant DVD - a must for all MLP fans, old and new!
The main feature, A Very Minty Christmas, is approx. 44 minutes long. It tells the story of Minty, a clumsy and slightly meddling pony, who breaks the Christmas Candy Cane (a candy cane baked by Cotton Candy that sits on top of the enormous Christmas tree, lighting the way for Santa to find Ponyville). With a few charming songs along the way, the movie trips along to a predictable happy ending.
Also included is a bonus MLP episode, Dancing in the Clouds (which does not have a Christmas theme!).
And finally, our copy of the DVD (bought from Amazon.co.uk) also came with an Exclusive Colouring Sheet and Sticker Collection.
All-in-all a great DVD for MLP fans. Both myself and our daughter love it, and we really don't care that the main movie has a Christmas theme. The best thing is that this movie (and bonus episode) has all the current ponies in it (so if you don't own them, you probably will soon!). The original 1986 movie is fab, but stars all the original ponies of the 80s, which you can only buy 2nd-hand.
We hope there are many more new MLP DVDs to come!
