Money For Old Rope.......2007-08-31
Where can I start. This DVD was bought for me by my wife for a birthday present. There are a lot of interviews with people from the music industry who have played some part in the Floyd's development, allegedly. However what you have to remember there are no interviews whatsoever with any members of Pink Floyd. The DVD traces the band from it's start through to The Wall album, hence the "The Roger Waters Years". All the early songs ie, Arnold Layne, Scarecrow, See Emily Play, and Astronomy Domine, are performed by a cover band called "Barret". There are snippets of videos from TV from the early years but the music is NOT THE PINK FLOYD. Then we are treated to archive footage of "The Floyd" performing "Let there be more light", it's only a snippet but at least it is the Floyd from some TV show. There are then more snippets of the Floyd performing: Set the controls for the heart of the sun, Cymbaline, Granchester Meadow, Careful with that axe Eugene, and Atom heart mother, all taken from the KQED TV broadcast of the 29th April 1970. Remember all you get here on this dvd is a 30 second snippet at the most, of the band performing live, there are no complete tracks. Moving on, more interviews from people you've never heard of. We are treated to Atom Heart mother performed by Cirus Minor, Echoes by Mostly Autumn, Breath by Cirus Minor, The Great Gig in the Sky by The Trial, along with Wish you were here by the same band. Shine on you crazy diamond is provided by Cirus Minor. We then move to the Animals era, with Sheep being performed by Mostly autumn, then into to Wall era, The Trial is by The Trial, as is In the Flesh, and Hey You. Mostly Autumn provide a cover for Another Brick In the Wall part 2. So unless you are a hardent fan of the Floyd and want to listen to Snowy White for a couple of minutes or a member of the "Surrogate Band" for 10 minutes,I suggest you stay well clear, this is a dreadful DVD, and it was purchased in a top supermarket, it's a load of rubbish stay well clear!!!!!!!!

Brilliant performances.......2007-01-04
Atmospheric, smokey, lush. Jacobi plays briliantly against type and Daniel Craig's performance deserved an Oscar. As of 12/06, Craig's a star because of his performance as James Bond, but the earlier film shows his range to even better effect.
Love is the Devil.......2003-09-13
The brilliance of this film lies in the fact
that we see the world through the distorted
viewpoint of the painter, Frances Bacon.
We learn how he perceived his grim surroundings.
The teeth of his violent father are linked to
the laughing Pope's. Very few films on artists
can achieve this clear perspective. Peter
Watkins' film on Edvard Munch is an exception.
The shift between the artist's fantasy and
reality is excellent. Irony and tragedy are
kept in balance.
To either love or hate as a film.......2003-07-21
The question is whether you're viewing this as a lover of Bacon's work or to enjoy what is simply a fascinating cult film in itself. A few of the intermittant shots are not the most original and the storyline might not be to all tastes, but the Jacobi-Craig clash and borderline humour of supporting characters combine for some wonderfully twisted dialogue that brings it alive! If you're aware that none of Bacon's work is on offer, and appreciate tongue-in-cheek humour of it's darkest type then you will love this film.
Brilliantly shot in the style of Bacon's paintings.......2000-11-25
With creative and bizare camera angles, this film captures the way Francis Bacon saw the world. Derek Jacobi is both lovable and loathsome as Bacon. The images from this film stay with you. I highly recommend you see this film.
