    Amazon.co.uk Review

One of the most thoughtful films about World War II, this 1958 Edward Dmytryk (The Left Hand of God) drama, based on a novel by Irwin Shaw The Young Lions, tells parallel stories of two American soldiers (Montgomery Clift and Dean Martin) and one German officer (Marlon Brando), whose war experiences we follow until they intersect outside a concentration camp. Martin plays what he calls "a likeable coward," Clift is intense as a Jewish GI and Brando experiments with the limits of his part as a Nazi re-evaluating his beliefs. Legend has it that Clift accused Brando of bleeding-heart excessiveness. Interestingly, the two Method actors share no scenes together. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Very deep and superbly preformed.......2004-05-03

A very deep war-drama that shows real people with their own individual stories on both sides in WW2. Similar to "All Quiet on the Western Front" about WW1, it is surprising to think of German soldiers as distinguishable individuals with their own thoughts, fears and motives. It is a lot more difficult to make a film this way about WW2 than it is about WW1 because it is impossible to sympathise with Germany. This film is based on a deep novel and, needless to say, the acting (esp. Brando's) is perfect. Even though I don't want to see anything good in German soldiers in WW2, they were, afterall, individual people and this movie, like no other, shows it very well and makes the best out of it.

4 out of 5 stars It takes two to tango!.......2003-04-04

An admirable attempt to balance the human motivations on both sides. This film sticks in my memory as being one of the few that offered something of a balanced view - although there is still A LOT left unsaid. At least, we don't get the one-dimensional sadist Nazis and actually are allowed to empathise with real people on both sides. What a change from the unsubtle propoganda that typifies a thousand other "great" war films where every victim of atrocities is a faultless hero.

4 out of 5 stars One of the best of it's genre..........2000-11-02

Opening as Germany gears it's population up for war, The Young Lions charts the progress of three very different characters; Clift's Jewish 'Everyman', Martin's callow Broadway star and Brando's increasingly disillusioned Nazi ski instructor. There paths inevitably cross along the way, during the conflict, but that isn't the real story. This is truly, as all the great war films are, a story about the people, not war. We see racism amongst those on the same side, bravery, love... every gambit of the human character is played out by the three leads and those around them. Ok, the *very* final scene may be a little too schmaltzy, but the overall message is so strong that it hardly matters. Well worth watching!

    4 out of 5 stars A real gem.......2007-01-01

If you have not seen Deep cover then you are missing a treat. This is one of the best underated thrillers/dramas of the 90's..stunning performances from both Lawrence fishburne and Jeff Godblum. I used to own this on video and re-bought it on dvd. Lawrence Fishburne plays a cop sent to infiltrate a drug cartel undercover..he starts at the bottom with the street pushers and works his way to the top where he meets the top boss, along the way he meets jeff goldblum who plays a bent lawyer in league with the cartel..Fishburne gets deeper into the lifestyle and doesnt know if he's a cop pretending to be a drug dealer or vice-versa.

Great soundtrack and features the deep cover single by dr dre/snoop. A real classic and very underated..go buy

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointed..........2006-11-29

The real annoyance is that I bought this mainly to get hold of the moody ambient piece that plays during the film's love scene. I find it's called 'John and Betty's Theme' and lasts only two and a half minutes... so cut down it's really just a sampler.

As for the rap side, there are far superior albums... a lot of filler tracks on here I can't remember from the (excellent) film... perhaps some guy was listening to them on a walkman as he passed the main character in a crowded street?

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant movie is all I need say............2004-05-12

I watched the film DEEP COVER and wanted to recommend this film to anyone who is into a film that has brilliant acting by main players and supporting cast alike. Some excellent direction by Bill Duke, who if you don't know him, he is in Commando and Predator. The chap who loves to shave. An excellent performance by Laurence Fishburne as undercover cop John Hall, sent in to infiltrate a drugs cartel. Jeff Goldblum also puts in a great performance as David Jason Attorney at Law. A film that has action, suspense, brilliant story and a twist. A scene in particular is quite graphic but only adds to the film's realism, and of life on the street. In one word "BRILLIANT". Well worth the spend.

There are a couple dismal possible explanations for the talented Rose Byrne's presence in this piece of filth: (1) This was the best of the offers she was getting from American producers at the time. (2) This was her own choice over better offers.

So she found herself in a supporting role in a film where a Jewish-American writer (Dynlan) cowers before a raging black writer (the robotic Snoop Dogg) for an hour and a half before the way-too-predictable ending. You won't get any background into the characters. After all, they're principally symbols. Seemingly, insight derives from the situation: two writers meet in a decaying tenament, discussing (if that's what it can be called) their thoughts (if that's what they can be called) which provokes a lot of racial friction. Then there's this white chick (I think at one point she says she's Jewish) who comes between.

If you are in anyway sane and rational, and you can live without seeing absolutely everything Rose Byrne did, then avoid this like a rat-infested tenement.

This film makes Rose's TWO HANDS seem palatable in comparison -- altho, Rose is much prettier here.

5 out of 5 stars SAD DOCUMENTARY ON AMERICA'S REFUSING TO SAVE JEWS.......2005-01-14

This very well made documentary, AMERICA AND THE HOLOCAUST was part of the made for television series, "The American Experience." Partly narrated by of one of three children of the German Jewish Klein family who in 1936 emigrated to the United States, we are taken through developments in Germany leading to the "Final Soluton." Then the youngest member of the Klein children, William, our story teller was 16. We are shown the parallel developments in anti-Semitic actions in Germany and America; both in public and behind closed government doors during the 1930s and 1940s. Archival footage of the American Nazi Bundt's rallies and several pictures of "restricted" resorts and beaches ["no Jews or dogs allowed"] provide the chilling backdrop of American anti-Semitism.

The now aged William Klein tells us through his family and official government letters of his sibs' endless struggle, beginning right after the Nazis' Krystall Nacht in 1938, to get his parents out of Germany and then France (where the Nazis deported them to a concentration camp). Yet the U.S. State Department set up insurmountable barriers for William's parents. Former government officials interviewed for this film confirm on camera that there were deliberate policies to reduce or stop the flow of Jews into the United States. It is furthmore clearly shown that although American journalists, governmenet officials and military personnel knew very well since 1940-41 of Germany's plan to round up and murder all of Eastern and Western Europe's Jews, helping these victims of Nazi genocide was not a priority. The struggle to save Europe's Jews was not only vigorously promoted by American Jewish organizations. As the documentary shows, a significant number of Christians in the government heroically struggled to save these people. Alas, even at the highest levels, President Franklin D. Roosevelt could not be persuaded to intervene in beginning to stop by 1942 the by then well known Jewish genocidal program assigned to the notorious Gestapo's Einsatzgruppen.

Official excuses for America doing nothiug to save Europe's Jews, even by purchasing their freedom in Romania for $50 each, ranged from the mission being "impossible" to reluctance to allow our World War II enemies to gain a financial advantage from such a rescue program. [While the film did not make the point, American corporations were secretly doing big industrial business, honoring their lucrative pre-war contracts with Hitler's Germany from 1942 until the war's end ... to the deadly disadvantage of our fighting men and women. Order from Amazon.Com: "Trading With The Enemy: An Exposé of the Nazi-American Money Plot, 1933-1949," by Charles Higham].

Meanwhile, just three weeks before their visa to America was finally approved (after three years of stalling), mother and father Klein are transported by the Nazis from France to Auschwitz. In early 1943, William joins the U.S. Army and fights his way across Europe. We are shown U.S.Air Force reconnaissance footage taken through the bomb sight as bombs fall over Auschwitz from a group of eight American bombers. The cluster of falling bombs are not targeted at the smoking crematory ovens clearly visible in the film, but rather at the German chemical factory in Auschwitz just five miles away. The narrator explains that officially, the U.S. War Department's position was that bombing the Auschwitz death camp was "impossible." [the narrator points out, during the Auschwitz chemical plant bombing mission, one bomb went astray landing in the death camp and killed 85 inmates and several of their Nazi guards]. Meanwhile, for purely political reasons Roosevelt establishes a special refugee agency (understaffed and underfunded) for rescuing Jews. He put this in place only days before an upcoming vote in Congress would have done the same thing. Obviously, if Roosevelt had done this two years earlier for humanitarian reasons then it is estimated that as many as 1 million Jews could have been saved.

As Germany loses the war, William is among the American soldiers who liberates surviving Jews from concentration camps in Czechoslovakia. Among them is a young woman near death ..... who will become his wife. AMERICA AND THE HOLOCAUST has a bittersweet human ending, but it gives one pause to wonder why it is that when it comes to saving innocent human lives the United States is both capable of great feats of bravery and commitment b but also deceit and indifference.

This is an excellent, historical film that is very worthwhile purchasing and studying individually and in groups.
