Excellent film........2008-02-24
l watched this film because of Colin Firth and I have to say that I truly enjoyed it. Very sensible, well written, acted and directed. I highly appreciated the honesty and realism of the story, I wish Colin Firth would do original and moving movies like this one more often. He's really good at it and I'm sure he enjoys it. It's meaningful, it's really something.
Wow what a film!.......2008-02-18
I was not sure about this film but loving Colin Firth i knew i would like it. However it has to be said that it was a very emotional film and excellently performed - a real tear jerker - bet you cry at the end!!!
A study of father-son relationship.......2008-02-15
This film is based on a memoir written by Blake Morrison and concerns his relationship between his father and himself. Arthur (Jim Broadbent) , a family doctor, develops cancer and Blake returns to the family home. The period up to and just after Arthur's death shows Blake looking back, via flashbacks involving Blake (Colin Firth) as a boy and as a young man. His memories are of an extrovert, loud man who really takes little interest in his son and his achievements. He is not portrayed as a bad or vicious but as a father who rarely recognises his son's individuality. He does not respect his son's views, his privacy or seem to care about what he feels. He is self-absorbed in a jovial way. In addition to this, Blake discovers his father has been unfaithful to his mother and this leads to other important questions for Blake. During Arthur's terminal illness, he experiences the burden of reconciling his negative feelings about his father and the emotions he thinks he should feel to his dying parent.
There are several faults that I think reduce the impact of this enjoyable film. Blake's mother (Juliet Stevenson) is a cipher. She has little to say and we hardly know her better at the end than we do at the beginning. 'Downtrodden' and 'long suffering' would be a good description of her by only in the sense that she is married to a man not sensitive to people around him. I thought the character development rather thin though they are not in the least cardboard cut-outs. The music was atrocious, in my view - too loud, drowning out dialogue on a number of occasions and somehow often inappropriate to what was going on on-screen. Gushing, romantic 1950s Hollywood was out of place in what was an intimate drama. Finally, there was a scene of outrageous schmalz near the end, with the camera rotating 360 degrees round and round the characters, music just short of heavenly choirs and sunlit uplands. It struck a false note and was, to use a word I rarely use, vulgar.
I have not Blake Morrison's book so maybe my criticisms are unfair. There are some very funny bits, like the camping expedition, and it is very well acted and well photographed. The time shifts are not at all confusing because Blake looks very different in the periods covered.
The title of the film is taken from the famous painting. I take it to mean that Blake, because of the claustrophobic nature of families, his own immaturity and simple lack of information, did not see his father for what he was - a man with failings and one who could not express the love he felt, despite his apparently extrovert nature.
Despite my reservations, I enjoyed this film and would recommend it.
SLOW SLOW SLOW.......2008-02-13
I bought this DVD because it was recommended, but I have to say I was very disappointed in it. It was slow, boring and rather uninteresting. Apart from the excellent Jim Broadbent,, there was nothing entertaining or worthwhile in this film at all. It bought tears to my eyes but then yawning always does that. I would not recommend this film at all. At least it will fit under the table leg to stop it wobbling. Save your money.
Quiet yet deeply moving film........2008-02-12
This is an autobiography of the author of the book on which this film is based on. It depicts family conflicts and coming-age agendas which we all once experienced at some point in our life. The film production focuses on 'reflection' of our life and this is evident in their camerawork in which they shoot through mirrors and glasses.

Realisitic drama of 21st century sex slavery.......2007-06-21
Winner of sixteen awards (including eight BAFTAs) and sixteen nominations this TV mini series does not disappoint.
The human drama is totally convincing amidst an almost documentary style as we follow sisters Elena (Anamaria Marinca) and Vera Visinescu (Maria Popistasu) betrayed by a supposed fiancée into a life of sex slavery in the Balkans.
All aspects of the trafficking are dramatised, the corruption of the police and the private American security forces supplied by respected American security company CEO Tom Harlsburgh (Chris Potter). Far more shocking is the ruthless and callous treatment of the girls by the men buying selling and exploiting them.
Depth is added with the investigation by Daniel Appleton (fine performance by John Simm) into the dismissal of Callum Tate (Luke Kirby) for allegedly buying girls for trafficking, and as Daniel pursues his investigation we delve deeper into big business involvement and indifference.
A wincingly realisitic portrayal of human behaviour at its very worst.
A definate must see...........2007-03-15
I remember this when it was broadcast on channel 4 over several weeks, and it was as hard hitting then, as now. This is not by any means, your average 'feel good' movie, instead shows the journey of two women, who were exploited and trafficked into the sex trade by various people.
A definate must see, this film ought to have 'based on a true story' all over it, for all the women who have taken that road from their own countries with little hope of ever going back. This is a near real account of what happend to two of them..........
This is true reality tv!.......2007-02-20
Having seen this originally on Channel 4 TV and not normally being a person to buy these "TV DVDS" I remembered roughly the story behind this film. The 2 main players, the Moldovian sisters are conned into venturing abroad to find jobs and where the grass is apparently greener-isn't it always? Inevitably they do not reach their true destination and are sold by various people, abused by all and sundry and generally lead horrific lives - far from what they were promised.John Simm who fits his part perfectly as the reporter/nosey parker is lucky not to get killed having naievly got himself in various "situations". The acting really is superb, the tale frightening, and one that is undoubtedly and very sadly true of the total corruption involved in cross border policing. A good film.
