Amazon.co.uk Review
Some critics complained that City of Angels could never compare to Wim Wenders's exquisite German film Wings of Desire, which served as the later film's primary inspiration. The better argument to make is that any such comparisons are beside the point, because Wings of Desire was a much more deeply poetic, artfully contemplative film, whereas City of Angels is an enchanting product of mainstream Hollywood. Meg Ryan stars as Dr. Maggie Rice, a heart surgeon who is grieving over a lost patient when an angel named Seth (Nicolas Cage) appears to comfort her. She can see him despite the "rule" that angels are invisible, and Seth's love for Maggie forces him to choose between angelic immortality and a normal human existence on earth with her. Featuring heavenly roles for TV veterans Andre Braugher and Dennis Franz, the film liberally borrows imagery from Wings of Desire, but it also creates its own charming identity. Cage and Ryan give fine performances as lovers convinced they are soul mates, and although the plot relies on a last-minute twist that doesn't quite work, this earnest love story struck a chord with audiences and proved to be one of the surprise hits of 1998. --Jeff Shannon

Beautiful.......2008-01-27
This film has profoundly touched and moved me in a big way. It amazes me that I always end up crying every time I watch it (I have seen it countless times - but then I'm a big softy!) It's a statement about the power of love and the lengths that one will go to for their "true love". It has to be one of the most moving love stories ever made. You would have to have a heart of stone NOT to be moved by it. The film really speaks on many levels and I persoanlly have got a lot from it. The performances are amazing - it has a pretty good soundtrack too. Whether you have any faith or belief doesn't matter - watch the film and prepare to be moved and inspired, and for just a moment you might believe in Angels....
"Flights of Angels Sing Thee to Thy Rest".......2007-10-03
An angle, Seth (Nicolas Cage) on a mission to pick up a soul, is enamored of a woman, Dr. Maggie Rice (Meg Ryan) he comes across. Even though he is supposed to be invisible, she looked straight at him as a man. From that point on he contemplates maintaining a life with her. Unfortunately they are different species.
A chance encounter with a mysteriously sensitive and understanding hospital patient, Nathaniel Messinger (Dennis Franz) opens up the Seth's opportunity by explaining that due to free will Seth can die and be reborn as human if he really wants to.
But does Seth want to give up immortality? And at what cost?
Maggie does not believe in angles; so how will she react?
This film has some excellent photography and the pictures of Tahoe make you want to live there forever.
The film was based but no exactly copied form an earlier movie "Wings of Desire" (1987).
If you are interested in fallen angels then you can not miss "The Horn Blows at Midnight" (1945)
A genuine rip-off........2007-07-09
Well not that much to say really, either than if you have seen "Wings Of Desire" by Wem Winders, a beautiful German film, you'll know that this film is a bad rip-off and that it is Hollywood at its worst; just pure and simple entertainment that is presented in a package, to make it seem profound.
The whole theme and idea about angels versus man is so poetic, beautiful and deeply expressed in Wings Of Desire, in all its profound originality, and what you get here is the very same theme and idea without any real depth at all.
We all know that Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan are wonderful actors, but that just doesn't save this film. Let me put it this way - I guess if you haven't seen its original source of inspiration (Wings Of Desire) and you like sentimental love stories, you might like this one, but it really only contains just a mere fragment of the true magic in comparison with what its originator created.
I really wonder how this can be allowed - in the music industry it wouldn't be, that's what the © copy sign is supposed to protect.
How to ruin a perfectly good film........2007-06-29
"City Of Angels" is an abysmal rip-off of a German film "Wings Of Desire"(Himmel Uber Berlin),which is a great film loosely sharing the storyline of COA(angels watching over us,one of them, against the advice of others, falls in love with a human-I won't spoil the ending of either film).
It shares with most Hollywood product the inability to conceive of an original idea, embarrasing sentimentality and the need to have a happy ending.COA goes one better with Meg Ryan(has she EVER done a good film??)
ruining an already bad script with her usual dreadful performance.Nicholas Cage must have been skint or needing to pay off an ex-wife or something when he agreed to take part in this drivel.
Do yourself a favour and get "Wings Of Desire",and remember to warn your family and friends about this film.
Love is Life.......2007-06-01
This movie will be timeless..Nic Cage and Meg Ryan are both outstanding in this film. Seth makes us believe what we all truly want to believe in that someone will be there to help us take the journey "home". Can we ever imagine what it would be like not to enjoy all of life's pleasures, joys, and the heartaches?..how we all take that for granted. Maggie is a sassy no nonsense gal and isn't a quitter, losing "Tom" makes her see how vulnerable we are, and how vulnerable she becomes when meeting Seth, she takes a hard look at her life and where it's going. We know the ending..it's heartbreaking for both Seth and Maggie..What Seth experience in a few short hrs..we experience in a lifetime. Maggie's disappointment knowing she couldn't show him everything after coming so far to be with her..Do we not experience these things in a lifetime also. The message is: Life is short..use it wisely..love all that surrounds us..the ones we love the most let us not take for granted..We only cheat ourselves if we don't experience life that was given and what we make of it when death comes to us...Could we bare eternity like Seth? Seth questioned life's treasures? Free will we all have..so use it wisely..sometimes we don't get a second chance..
