Stand By Me [1987]

Amazon.co.uk Review

A sleeper hit when released in 1986, Stand by Me is based on Stephen King's novella "The Body" (from the book Different Seasons); but it's more about the joys and pains of boyhood friendship than a morbid fascination with corpses. It's about four boys ages 12 and 13 (Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell) who take an overnight hike through the woods near their Oregon town to find the body of a boy who's been missing for days. Their journey includes a variety of scary adventures (including a ferocious junkyard dog, a swamp full of leeches and a treacherous leap from a train trestle), but it's also a time for personal revelations, quiet interludes and the raucous comradeship of best friends. Set in the 1950s, the movie indulges an overabundance of anachronistic profanity and a kind of idealistic, golden-toned nostalgia (it's told in flashback as a story written by Wheaton's character as an adult, played by Richard Dreyfuss). But it's delightfully entertaining from start to finish, thanks to the rapport among its young cast members and the timeless, universal themes of friendship, family and the building of character and self-esteem. Kiefer Sutherland makes a memorable teenage villain and look closely for John Cusack in a flashback scene as Wheaton's now-deceased and dearly missed brother. A genuine crowd-pleaser, this heartfelt movie led director Rob Reiner to even greater success with his next film, The Princess Bride. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars I love this movie.......2008-01-29

I really love this film. Its a type of film that gets hold of you. Alough this movie is sad it is also very funny. I really enjoyed this film and would watch it over and over again. I would like to thank rob riner for making the film and wil wheaton for a world class performance. River Phoenix performance was the best but sadly cannot thank him coz he sadly died of a drug overdoes when he was just 23.He was only 15 when this movie was made. I am sure he would have been one of the best actors in the world and went on to make many great films if he had lived. Stupid Drugs. RIP River.

4 out of 5 stars Coming of age.......2007-11-03

Many times in my life I've felt on the verge of an adventure. Many times I haven't followed through, but when I have the world has opened up to a new understanding. That's what I think about when I think of this movie. A coming of age tale of stretching the view of the world and the lessons that are part of a growing understanding. Any person that has tried to stretch their wings and move out into an unknown opportunity or future can identify with the feelings such a choice encompasses. The moving story combined with a beautiful song are a hard combination to top.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer Brilliance.......2007-10-07

As a 34 year old man, i cannot help but look back on my childhood when and after watching this film. It really is superb and brings a lump to my throat at the end when you get to here what the BEST mates have done in there lives and where there going. It brings it all home to you. Buy this film and you will never regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Film, a must-watch.......2007-10-04

Stand By Me is one of the most memorable films of the 80s. It is emotional, exciting, quite funny and mildly scary (for children). River Phoenix and the other child actors are great in it and Kiefer Sutherland makes one of his best performances. The Storyline (made by Stephen King) is gripping, thrilling and a typical King novel, the film makes it more emotional and adds a bit of humour to it in small bits (credit to Rob Reiner). Although it is a 15, it is good for kids to watch as it shows them what being a kid was like in 1959 (when the film is set) and they will enjoy it. I don't know anyone who has seen this film who hasn't enjoyed it and I'm sure you will too if you haven't already seen it.
