A fantastic roller coaster of emotion .........2006-01-08
This film is a wonderful insite in to how two people's paths cross and how true love can win and destroy lives. Barbra plays a wonderful singer, who has some fantastic songs to sing with The Oreo's and who hits the big time after she is seen by Kris, who plays a 'has been' rock star. Obsessed by her, he escalates her to super stardom whilst he sits back and watches, and ends up wanting badly what she ends up with - that esteemed love and adoration from the public. Their chemistry is hot and you are left wanting to see so much more.
The emotional toing and froing captures you immediately and you are drawn into their relationship right through to the end of the movie, laughing and crying with them both every step of the way. I broke the video tape - I've played it so much, and now I long for it to come out on DVD. Jan 1, 2010 seems an eternity to wait for this masterpiece to be released.
5 amazing stars for this film, an absolutely MUST SEE.

A Star is Born.......2005-06-02
I haven't actually bought it yet. Having seen it at the pictures and on the telly I have been waiting for it to come out on DVD, in vain I fear....I am going to give in now and put my order in for a video from an Amazon seller...But I want to know from anyone, WHY has this not ever been re-released on DVD? It's such an excellent, excellent film, and the soundtrack, which i have had on CD for years is amazing!!! so if anyone can enlighten me as to Bab's reluctance to release a DVD please do. Thanks, Di
A Star is Born.......2004-04-20
This film has a great sound track. It's well worth a watch. Simple by todays standard of filming, but some good scenes... at the open air concert for one. A good film that deserves a night in.

Three elegant though provoking stories, but lacking synchronicity........2007-05-28
This movie is based on three short stories from the same book, which are all experienced from the view point of an 8 year old boy, Moncho, but which are otherwise scarcely related. The story of the school teacher is touchingly portrayed, and Moncho is central to this story, but the story of the dog and the story of the wolf woman contain events which Moncho watches rather than participates in, and could perhaps have been better told from a closer viewpoint.
The three stories themselves are simple but twisted, like the best of Don Camillo. The film seems understated, at least when observed through the English subtitles, and the adult characters seem deliberately underdeveloped.
The English subtitles are poor, at times dialog is missing, and at times the translation was literally correct but could have better reflected the empathy of the character.
Overall this is a rewarding and thought provoking movie. Although this lacks the beautiful score of Malena, Butterfly's Tongue should appeal to the same audience.
Masterpiece.......2007-03-25
Being the archetypal English monoglot (OK I know a few words of other languages but I'm not too hot) I almost dropped this from my rental list when I read the review that it had no subtitles (I can only assume that reviewer couldn't find them).
How wrong that would have been as this was a mesmerising film. The characters were played by an exceptional cast who brought together every nuance of that time in rural Spain. The relationships between the characters - especially that of Monch and his teacher Don Gregorio - felt as real as if one was watching real life instead of a movie. Dialogue was excellent and I wish I could understand Spanish and read the original stories that the movie is based on.
All in all a first rate film that one would hate to have missed.
No subtitles - beware.......2006-12-01
I rented this DVD after reading the wonderful reviews and if you understand Spanish they were probably 100%. The film was to be beautifully filmed, the period style and location were relevant and the acting (particularly the children)seemed to be excellent and the film score delightful (5 star) there was no option for subtitles at all in the menu. I fast-forwarded and jumped the entire movie to get the gist. Very disappointing.
The respect of the teacher.......2006-06-21
The wonderful Fernan Fernan Gomez (maestro) addresses the small child Moncho in the formal tense in Spanish - usted.
A beautiful film, the teacher is so professional and so filled with respect for his pupil in a country where every child is addressed as 'my king' or 'my queen'.
The butterfly imagery is heartbreaking and prophetic.
This film is a masterpiece. Noone should teach children to hate.
knock out.......2005-11-01
this is a great film, funny,sad,real...an amazing evocation of time and place..the hopes and dreams of a small boy inextricably linked to those of his country...please see it..

Plodding adventure series........2008-01-15
Richard Hannay is a wealthy engineer in the early 20th Century. Having made his fortune in South Africa he has returned to Britain to seek adventure.
We are treated to a good selection of stories and locations. It is all pretty tounge in cheek with no dramatic tension. I would have preferred to see a more comic or hard edged presentation, but it is interesting enough to watch.
If you prefer Agatha Christie to Sherlock Holmes then this is probably for you. Sherlockians take a gander at Cribb.
Super UK Series.......2007-10-12
Hannay - based on the Richard Hannay novies set in the 1914-1930 period is a super box set.
Great acting - good stories - well worth buying.
Good price too!
Got 652 Minutes Free?.......2007-07-05
Wow! I love this TV series! If you enjoyed Buchan's work and like Robert Powell's lively and accomplished performance in the 'Thirty Nine Steps' then this is for you, stop reading my review and buy it! I rented this from Amazon and wished I'd bought it now.
I wanted to see it from the beginning as soon as I'd reached the end.
This is basically Richard Hannay does the a-team, edwardian style and each one is a rollicking great adventure.
Buy this if you liked the film (any of them), the books and have 652 minutes to spare.
