Good but let down a bit with commentary.......2008-02-08
I had previously watched the series on a random basis when it was shown on TV so I purchased the box sets for seasons 1 and 2. I now wish I'd looked a bit more and bought the complete series box set. Superb acting and a cast that runs through all my favourites, The Wire, Special Victims Unit, Law and Order, The Sopranos etc. Brutal, but not in a glorified way, and realistic. The only thing that annoyed me about the show was the commentary provided in the form of a wheelchair bound convict with various views on the world. Totally unnecessary. When expanding on another character it fulfilled a function, otherwise it appeared a bit arty farty in my opinion. However this aside another HBO gem.
could try harder.......2007-09-02
I was also disappointed with this series as I was hoping for a gritty prison drama set in a realistic setting. Unfortunately stereotyping is the order of the day; from the black crack smokers to the muslim radicals to the mafioso wiseguys - none of the characters seem convincing or real. Then there is the real problem of the pretentious cut scenes of a disabled inmate spouting profound wisdom about life which really do break the action up and annoy you with its cod philosophy. Up to ep. 8 and will probably stick with it but i would rent rather than buy.
Good but has a major problem.......2007-08-22
I bought this boxset as i am a HBO fan and i like many other people enjoy getting into a good series. The story line and characters are good but the major problem has to be the fact that the story is constantly interrupted by abstract scenes of some guy in a wheelchair in a large reloving glass hamster ball quoting gangster poetry which i promise will annoy the hell out of you as he appears every 5 or 10 mins throughout each episode of which i have watched x4 so far and it is not needed unless you are taking a huge amount of drugs in which case it will probably fit in well.
We're off to see the Warden..............2007-08-06
HBO; do they ever do anything wrong? You should really know what to expect from Oz, quality drama, evocative characters, yadda yadda yadda. I don't understand why Oz was so overlooked here in Britain (well ok, it may be just a bit violent, decadent and downright EVIL for us faint hearted Brits), it's telly gold I tell you! I'll admit the first few episodes I was thinking "Hmm, this is a wee bit too rediculous for me", for a prison drama especially it is a little bit on the fantastic side. However once you get used to its nuances it'll infect you and gnaw away until it consumes your lust for telly altogether. By the end of the series I was actually shouting at the screen! another plus point for Oz is that is holds within its ranks of cast a few very underated actors, Lee Tergeson as Beecher is particulary memorable. The sheer amount of plot they squeeze into the programme is baffling as well. Rest assured you'll never be short of entertainment in Oz. Maybe one day some studio exec will look at the dvd sales of programmes like Oz and ponder "My, it seems people like good telly. Hmm, maybe we should make more". You can make it happen.
Welcome to Osawald..........2007-08-04
Oz introduces us to the microcosm of Emerald City- an experimental unit in the fictional Oswald State Penitentiary- and its inmates. A mixed bunch of hardened criminals, racists, addicts, out and out psychopaths, and at least one man who made one terrible mistake. Possibly no other television series has had a leading cast who should be so unsympathetic, and the miraculous thing is that Oz succeeds in getting you to care about them and only very rarely whitewashes the fact that most of these men are utter scum.
Narrated by a wheelchair bound former gang member (more familiar to most UK TV viewers as Michael from Lost), a ploy designed to tie each episode into a narrative theme such as sex, drugs, and capital punishment, each episode has its own story tied into a larger arc. The first season in particular focuses on escalating violence and racial tensions as different factions vie for control of the drugs that move through the unit and react to the initiatives of an increasingly draconian state governor. Mixed in with all of this is the arrival of Tobias Beecher, a soft lawyer convicted of killing a girl while driving drunk, whose highs and lows (some utterly appalling) run through the next several seasons. The whole story is not for the even remotely faint hearted with graphic violence, frontal male nudity, anal rape, and the sort of language you would expect from a group of male prisoners.
With all that said Oz is brilliantly written and acted and cannot be faulted. HBO probably produce the best TV on the planet and Oz was one of their early triumphs. This is a set of eight remarkably put together episodes of a remarkable series that takes us from the opening of Oz to a vicious conclusion without ever losing a step. For anyone who likes their television to be high quality and is not put off by a bit of (not unnecessary) gore Oz must be for you.

Best television series ever, ends here........2007-02-08
This television series was ground breaking for it's time. When it aired on Channel Four in the UK many years ago it was a very popular show by all the activity on Channel Four Forums. In this final sixth season everything is turned on it's head as many of the characters collide in a monumental climactic ending to the best television series ever. If you are a fan and have enjoyed the previous series collections, add this one to your dvd shelf. If you have never seen this show before, don't spoil it by buying this series first, get all the others before hand and watch them first.
Oh and by the way a region two coded set of HBO's OZ is on it's way so you can always wait for that if you don't have multi-region capabilities.

Oz enters Dorothy territory.......2007-09-29
I have watched seasons 1-3 of the OZ. They were great but season 4 is the best so far. You have to suspend your belief a lot for this season, but I think it's well worth it, as the drama is awesome. Every episode is brilliant, but there's two episodes in particular which are jaw droppingly amazing. I won't give away anything, but it involves Adebisi vs Karim and Karim vs Schillin"G"er. Can't wait for season 5 to be released.
Oz back to form.......2007-09-01
Season 1 was very good. Season 2 and 3 were ok. Season 4 puts Oz back to its best.
Loads of action, charting the collision course of the two biggest personalities in Oz: Simon Adebissi and Karim Sayed.
"Oz" starts to go too far over the rainbow in Season Four.......2005-03-09
There is a point in the final episode of "Oz: The Complete Fourth Season" where EM City Administrator Tim McManus (Terry Kinney) informs an inmate who is in fear for his life that there is no room in either protective custody or solitary confinement to put him. That certainly makes sense given the high body count during this season. Was it the highest body count ever for "Oz"? I have not been keeping a tally to this point, but it sure seemed like it was. After all, this was a season where most of the inmates on death row who died were not actually executed by the state. It is a good thing for Warden Leo Glenn (Ernie Hudson) that Governor James Devlin (Zeljko Ivanek) is running for re-election, because it helps to have a boss who thinks inmates killing inmates is, to put it delicately, not a bad thing.
The main dynamic for the fourth season ends up being between Simon Adebisi (Adewale Akinnouye-Agbaje) and Kareem Said (Eamonn Walker). From the beginning of "Oz" it was Said who has been the voice of reason, and it was Abedisi who personified the impulse towards anarchy at the Oswald Correctional Facility. After Khan's death, and because of Said's visits from Tricia Ross, Zahir Arif (Granville Adams) moves to take over the leadership of the Muslims. While Said is cast adrift in the hierarchy of Emerald City, Adebisi achieves his objective and actually masterminds the removal of McManus as the administrator of Oz. Of course, Abedisi's success contains the seeds of his own destruction because that is the way things go in the merry old land of Oz. Meanwhile, Said finds out that Oz makes men do things they never thought they would do and changes them in ways they would not want to be changed.
For me, and I suspect many, Tobias Beecher (Lee Tergesen) is the inmate we most identify with on "Oz." Beecher is the "regular" guy who ends up in prison and is fresh meat for the inmates, and the fact that he has survived this far does not in any way, shape or form convince me that I would be able to do half as well. But Beecher has survived, and in this season his ongoing conflict with Vern Schillinger (J.K. Simmons) turns even deadlier than it has been to date. If there is an element of Greek tragedy in "Oz" it is this sick little dance between Beecher and Schillinger, with Chris Keller (Chris Meloni) as the wild card. But running a close second is the twisted relationship that has developed between Ryan O'Reilly (Dean Winters) and Dr. Gloria Nathan (Lauren Velez), which takes the "you always hurt the one you love" to some extremes.
Even our narrator, the one-man Greek chorus Augustus Hill (Harold Perrineau), starts to become involved in the madness. After ruining one inmate's chances of parole, Hill finds himself in the middle of the power struggle to control the Homeboys. This problems have me worried because for me it is not "Oz" if Augustus is not explaining to us the different types of shivs you can make in prison (and the fact Perrineau is now on "Lost" and without the dreadlocks worries me even more). But then if there is anything we have learned from "Oz," in addition to never wanting to end up in prison, it is that incarceration does not change people for the better. Just look at Bob Rebadow (George Morfogen), who tells us that not only does every dog have his day, but once he does he will want another one.
The problem with the fourth season of "Oz" is that the effort to keep things boiling over has some of the developments going over the top. The experimental again drug is certainly one example, but the O'Reilly/Nathan relationship also goes beyond belief as far as I am concerned. By the time the show is drawing inspiration from Edgar Allan Poe's "The Cask of Amontillado" I am thinking it is time to be cleaning house. I have trouble remembering exactly how Emerald City was to be an innovative solution to the problem of the modern American prison in the face of the orgy of violence and keep thinking Glenn and McManus need to just lock down the whole prison. Of course, that would kill the drama of the show if all we had were men looked into cells, and HBO has no vested interest in doing that. But "Oz" is not about the escelating number of dead inmates, or even of naked inmates, but rather the life and death struggles of the place. Along with "The West Wing," "Oz" represents "politics" at its "best."

excellent.......2008-02-22
Firstly how was Oz not as big or bigger than Prison break ??? Oz is so much more enjoyable to watch... if your a prison break fan you will deffinately NOT be dissapointed in this outstanding tv drama....
Difference between Oz and prison break is.. in PB they just want to escape... in Oz they just want to survive even if it means putting some1 elses life on the line to save there own...
Every episode is so gripping and you fear for what is gonna happen next bcoz the prisoners in Oz are unpredictable and can kick off at any time leaving there victims with fatal wounds and and savage betings beatings and if there even more unlikely a bit of botty action...
Oz has lots of different ethnic groups and the story follows there every movment and plans... i dont know wot to say really.. but buy it... it really is an unforgetable tv experience....
Buy it
Oz: The BEST prison series ever - bar none!!.......2007-03-25
Oz is a very gritty US prison series in the fictional 'Oswold State Penitentiary' - it doesn't get tougher - or better - than this!!
It's been a long time since 'Oz' graced our screens here in the UK but, if you DID see it, you would have loved it. Treat yourself, BUY IT *NOW*!!
The series was shown late night / early morning and, not regularly either, it was still un-missable. I thoroughly recommend you get it even if you HAVEN'T seen it, you can buy each one individually or get ALL 6 together - it took long enough for it to appear on DVD but it's well worth every penny. You WON'T be disappointed.
Sorry that I haven't said too much about the series itself but as I said, it hasn't been seen here for a long time - I look forward to seeing every glorious episode again - it'll be well worth the wait.
Get this set NOW, you won't be disappointed!!

Kermit is back!.......2006-04-10
One more to chime in - no booklet!! What the hey - there is a slot for it, but nothing there. Just the four disk, no menu or program, nothing.
The Muppet show was so much fun. Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, the Swedish Chef, with a line up of guest starts that include Charles Aznavour, Candice Bergen, Ruth Buzzi, Joel Grey,
Lena Horne, Vincent Price, Twiggy, Peter Ustinov, Paul Williams and more.
Great set, but I really think we should have the missing booklet.
