Reign Over Me [2007]

Amazon.co.uk Review

One of the first films to examine the aftermath of post- 9/11 New York City, Reign Over Me shows how much even indirect contact with those who lost loved ones in the tragedy can greatly affect. Like rings of debris spiraling out from an explosion, Charlie Fineman's (Adam Sandler) loss also devastates his in-laws, who he refuses to speak to, and ex-college roommate, Alan Johnson. Reign Over Me stars Johnson, a successful dentist with a gorgeous wife, Janeane (Jada Pinkett Smith) and two kids, who finds Charlie reverted back into a teenage wasteland, unable to face his unbearable sadness. Sandler as Charlie looks like Bob Dylan and acts like Dustin Hoffman in his great dramatic performance. Listening to The Who and The Boss through headphones, playing video games, and continually remodeling his kitchen, Fineman's escapism disturbs Johnson, who, in turn, feels squelched by his stiflingly normal lifestyle. As the two reacquaint, Johnson is the only person who can help save Fineman from self-obliteration. The story analyzes Post Traumatic Stress with some accuracy, though excess sentimentality undermines emotional scenes. Survivor's guilt, assessing mental illness, and absolute incapacitation due to grief are all topics covered within the bounds of the enduring friendship forged between these two men. Ultimately, Reign Over Me's message is one of compassion, as a reminder to treat victims of loss with patience and care. But interestingly, it also pays heed to smaller human tribulations, which are obstacles to healing when left untreated. --Trinie Dalton

4 out of 5 stars Everyone needs a friend.......2008-02-08

Here we see two men under very different circumstances need the same thing, someone to talk too. Adam Sandler plays a man who is emotionally crippled by the loss of his wife and three daughters on one of the hijacked planes on 9/11. He has spiraled deep into isolation by his chosen path of mourning. While Don Cheadle's character has a very successful dental practice and great family, yet he is not able to communicate with either his partners or his wife.

These old college roommates meet by again by chance and renew their relationship. We share their emotional ride of ups and downs as they learn to communicate with each other as good friends do. And through this process they both gain their life back. I do not think that Adam Sandler may not have been the best casting choice for this movie, but he does well. Everyone else in this film did a great acting job. Especially Don Cheadle, Liv Tyler, Jada Pinkett Smith, Saffron Barrow and Donald Sutherland. This movie is worth watching and has a good soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars What can I say? Sandler can really act!.......2008-01-14

I really just want to echo everything that the other positive reviewers have said about this film. Having bought this simply because I like Adam Sandler, I was really shaken to discover that the man can act; putting in one of the best performances I've seen on screen in a long time.

This is one of those films where the direction, and the entire supporting cast seem almost superfluous to the interaction between the two main characters - Sandler (as Charlie Fineman) and Don Cheadle (playing his old college room-mate Alan Johnson). I think too that I can gauge the exact moment when (as one other reviewer said) Sandler pulls off one of the best acting performances I have ever seen, anywhere. I think he may even have surpassed little Dustin Hoffman in 'Rainman' and that's saying something!

Watch this, let the one or two small Hollywoodisms (Donald Sutherland as the Judge with a heart.. yeah right!) slide over you, and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A drama with comic moments.......2008-01-10

I would describe this as a drama with subtle comic moments rather than a comedy. Which might explain some of the disappointed, and one might say, shallow, reviews. I am not easily moved but I was by this film. I thought it was quite original. An excellent film I could easily watch again.

5 out of 5 stars sublime and profound.......2007-11-18

well, the flick can really provide you with very emotional images. i did like the choice of a subject and i truly think that it commemorates all who suffered a great deal of pain. the film with a very deep and profound storyline that examines life when it's broken and cannot be fixed where nothing is the same anymore and where it's practically impossible to resign yourself to situation after the tragedy.
think about yourself when you watch it and ask afterwards what would you do if everything what is the closest to your heart was abruptly taken away from you.

5 out of 5 stars Reign Over Me - Well worth a watch!.......2007-11-14

This is well worth a watch. I found it in the local supermarket video rental section and thought I would give it a go. I recognised one of the actors on the cover but did not read the names or the blurb on the back. I had no particular expectations but it turned out to be the best film I have seen in ages. It hit an emotional spot inside and it moved me.

Reign over me is a well crafted story yet it unfolds dynamically and in unexpected ways. Character development is well paced and the film is well directed and very believable.

I would be surprised if you were not moved by the story and the performances. A good film to cuddle up to your loved one and watch - although I watched it alone whilst my wife was away and it really made me value the time we spend together. This is not, however, one of those dreadful American emotional tales without real soul. This is good stuff.

It was only at the end of the film I realised it was Adam Sandler in one of the main roles - he did great. Don Cheadle (he's the actor I recognised on the cover) is one of my favorite American actors and it was great to see him in such prominence in this film, so if you're a fan of his he is great in this film.

It is a shame some of the other reviewers have chosen to tell the story as I enjoyed not knowing a thing about the film as it unfolded - that won't detract from the performances or the story though.

Great story. Well acted. Well worth watching.

      5 out of 5 stars a film without pretension.......2007-04-26

Even though this film is based on the aftermath of 9/11, it doesn't try to be political. It simply shows a man's grief and how he deals with losing his family. Although he is better known for comedy, having adam sandler playing a serious role should not put anybody off because he plays the role beautifully. Don Cheadle in the other title role carries on from where he left off in Crash with another thoughtful performance and the chemistry between the two of them is great to see. The film quite cleverly shows the two men dealing with their own issues, some more obvious than others, to a point that you don't know who is getting more benefit from who. The seriousness of the film is occasionally pervaded by snippets of humour which help you to relate wth the characters and provides refreshment from the large apple in your throat!! Even though 2007 has a number of blockbusters with massive budgets, this should be one of the more memorable films and should be part of anybody's collection.
