Take away the Fairy Godmother, and what have you got left from the Cinderella fable? The story of a girl for whom a bad stroke of luck is no match for her internal strength and purity of heart. Drew Barrymore plays Cinderella's alleged inspiration, Danielle, in this romantic drama that purports to tell the "facts" behind the Grimm brothers' story. One of three daughters of a man (Jeroen Krabbé) who dies and leaves her fate in the hands of a conniving stepmother (Anjelica Huston), Danielle is cast into the lowly role of a servant. Meanwhile, her sisters are evaluated as possible mates for a French prince (Dougray Scott), but he's far more intrigued with Danielle's intelligence and beauty--not to mention her way with a sword and fist. Directed by Andy Tennant (who directed Barrymore in TV's The Amy Fisher Story), Ever After has that rare ability to win the heart and mind of a viewer simply by being committed to its own innocence, particularly where Barrymore's luminous performance is concerned. A contemporary take on an old, virtually forgotten Hollywood convention--the costume adventure with middling artistic ambition but real audience appeal--Ever After is a surprisingly delightful film. --Tom Keogh

NO CINDERELLA, THIS YOUNG LADY.......2007-11-22
What a WONDERFULL Movie.
I bought the DVD of this movie in a Boxed Set of 3 Drew Barrymore movies, and am pleased to say that I have found it the BEST of the collection.
Drew Barrymore is PERFECTLY CAST as Dannielle, the "Cinderella" Character in this story, and portrays the role to perfection. ...This is Drew Barrymore at ger 16th Centuary BEST.
Broken hearted over the loss of her father, Dannielle finds herself condemmed to be a servant to her kaniving Step-Mother for many years, until she befriends the Crown-Prince. It is then that her life begins to chamge.
This is, as can be seen from the storyline, the Cinderella Story without the Magic and the Fairy-Godmother. This is that same story told, through the life of Dannielle, straight, with nothing special added. In fact, the major difference is that Dannielle actually meets the Crown-Prince some time before the Masked Ball; at which, her Step-Mother lets on the the Prince exactly who Danielle is, getting her rejected by him: something he later regrets.
As I have said: This movie is Drew Barrymore at her VERY BEST, aided and abbetted by good acting from the remainder of the cast. I can happily recommend this movie to ANYONE who has not yet seen it.
I have rated this movie with 5 stars ( 10/10 ), and only wish I could have given it MORE.
If you don't already have this movie in you collection, GET IT: YOU'LL LOVE IT!
One for children of all ages.......2007-07-20
This is one of the best films i have seen in a long time, if your looking for a feel good movie to while away a rainy miserable day this is the one, it provides humour and romance based on bringing the fairy tale of cinderella to true history. Dougray Scott is the young/ sexy prince charming and Drew Barrymore cinderella. It is the best 'cinderella' movie out, a real good chick flick. Highly recommend.
A wonderful story.......2006-12-18
How it looks if actually the type of film you would expect. People dressing up with clothes from the olden days, plot and discipline of olden times, to be exact etc. I do not usually enjoy these type of films, I find them rather boring. However, this is a good film with good actors. And al the more i love this because my favorite actress stars in it.
And still, it is a lovely story! See it!
Sumptuous and hopelessly romantic.......2006-09-23
Not expecting more than an overblown sassy-teen-meets-stepmother, every scene of Ever After was a surprising delight. I'm an absolute sucker when it comes for fairy tales, and it's a pleasure to see one that revels in all the details, from historic costume to jokes about Da Vinci. The settings are achingly beautiful, and sorry, but I've got to mention the costumes again - gorgeous 16th Century (?) creations that Anjelica Huston obviously adores wearing. Yes, Drew Barrymore does play a gutsy heroine, and yet she also has a sweetness and innocence that suits the saccharine story. As for the handsome Prince, well, he WAS - plus a nice blend of dim and passionate, with very kissable-looking lips. Our heroine obviously agrees.
I recommend this film for anyone who wants to wallow unashamedly in romance and historical fantasy. Anjelica Huston's eyebrows alone make it worth the watch.
Wow.......2006-04-07
This film is brillent, its a sort of cinderalla story.
Danille (Drew Barrymore) loves her father, and her father certainly loves her.
One day he brings home with him A countness.
and two little girls.
When Danille father dies, when she was eight years old.
Her horrible Stepmother makes her a slave in their farm.
Instead of being one of the mistress's of the farm she is instead cleaning out pigs everymorning and doing all the dirty work.
Prince Henry (Dougary Scott) doesnt want to be King. And quiet often climbs out of his window and escapes from the castle.
One night his father is very angry at finding him missing so he sends out his guards to find him.
And when they bring him back he tells his son that he must find a Wife by a certain time otherwise he must marry Princess of Spain.
Danille and Henry meet (he doesnt know she is a servant)
And fall in love.
Will they be able to be together? since her stepmother has quiet different ideas.
a really enjoyable romantic film ******
