Amazon.co.uk Review
Italian star and filmmaker Massimo Troisi was dying of heart failure even before this film, his dream project, began production, and he prevailed upon British director Michael Radford (White Mischief) to see him and the film through to the end. (The 40-year-old Troisi, a beloved comic actor in Italy, died the day production wrapped.) Based on true events, Troisi plays a shy postman who strikes up an unlikely friendship with exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda (Philippe Noiret). Through Neruda's example and tutelage, the hero learns to think of his Italian fishing village in lyrical terms, as well as how to talk to women and even find the strength to take his political stands. Sweet as it is, the film finally pushes beyond its charming borders to become an even more complex and poignant story about the pain of growing into one's destiny. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

La Dolce Vita.......2008-01-22
"Il Postino" is a likeable film that is set on a small Italian island. It is about a poor fisherman turned postman who strikes up an unlikely friendship with exiled Chilean communist poet Pablo Neruda. They discuss poetry and invent metaphors together amidst picturesque coastal scenery and the poet assists the postman with his pursuit of the beautiful Beatrice ,whom he eventually succeeds in marrying. This film is about friendship and the power that words have to define and convey emotion to other human beings."Il Postino" is well acted and it is based on a true story ,but sadly it doesn't have a happy ending.
How poetry can change your life.......2006-11-29
A beautifully shot film about frienship and poetry. Highly reccomended.
Heart-warming.......2006-08-17
Massimo Troisi is irresistible as the postman who delivers letters to the exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda in a small but beautiful island in Italy. He is so natural and charming in his role that you forget he is acting. His hesitation, his stuttering, his quiet and simple demeanour, all merge to create a character who is totally believable and utterly lovable.
The entire cast do a great job, but it is Troisi who steals the show. What makes the film even more poignant is that Troisi died only two days after filming ended due to heart failure. The memory of his greatness as an actor will live on in this heart-warming masterpiece of friendship and poetic reverence.
Endeering, a wonderful journey in a poetic fisherman.......2005-11-24
At first this movie seemed to be this kind of beautiful love story with in the background some politics events and Pablo neruda exil to Italy. At first Massimo Troisi managed to give to his character a wonderful depth and it's very easy to stick to the story and starve for more about this story. Noiret is very efficient in his role of Pablo neruda giving some brightness to the character. the relation between Neruda and the fisherman relates more to brotherhood than a simple friendship. My favourite part was when the poetic fisherman started to write his own poetry based on the sounds of this small harbour. In few words this story is everything but dull, Troisi is for me a revelation in his role and will remain for the years to come his own masterpiece. To be seen, again and again!!!!!
A great film!.......2005-09-30
The main reason for watching this film was to try too improve my italian. But, eventough the main language is italian, it is not at all intruding and soon you find yourself reading the english sub-titles without any problem. The film is magnificient and as many italian films, moves slowly and brings you along with it. A most relaxing journey that leaves you smiling and makes you feel good about life and friendship.
