Enjoyable .......2007-10-15
Based on the true story of Vince Papale who made it into the NFL team the Philadelphia Eagles from open try outs.
The movie portrays his troubles and doubts as he struggles with what life throws at him, and the plight of the working man in a difficult time in America's industrial relations.
Probably one for the dedicated sports or American football fan, although my family watched this and quite enjoyed it, and they are not keen sports fans!
Likeable true story.......2007-09-28
Mark Wahlberg is on fine form in this likeable true story / sports movie about a bartender who got the opportunity to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. It's not overly cheesy like many sports movies and tries to play out more like Rocky than say Varsity Blues. So don't expect loads of pranks etc from the players, look more for a tale of one man struggling to fulfil his dreams and you won't be disappointed.
The closing credits even contains some actual footage of the real Vince Papale and the key game moments featured within the film.
Amazon.co.uk Review
Past and present collide in this epic adventure that reveals the origin of Iron Man. While raising the ruins of a long buried Chinese Kingdom, billionaire inventor Tony Stark digs up for more than he bargained for. He unleashes an age-old prophecy that fortells the resurrection of the Mandarin, the emperor of China`s darkest and most violent dynasty. In order to confront the destructive force, Tony creates an armoured suit infused with high-tech weaponry. To stop the evil that he himself has raised from the earth, Tony must become his greatest invention ever - Iron Man!
The newly born champion must travel to the four corners of the earth to battle the Mandarin`s henchmen, the Elementals - four magical warriors who harness the power of the elements - earth, water, wind and fire - with deadly chemistry. But it is the Iron Knight, as he is known in the prophecy, strong enough to defy fate and turn back the malevolent forces hell-bent on earth`s destruction?

Invincible? Not really...........2007-12-27
I'm going to keep this review short - this story is just really poor. The animation, while not brilliant, is watchable but the story is unmemorable - even while you're part way through watching it! Not really a good sign....
Given the vast source material, perhaps Stane (Iron Monger) would've made a more interesting tale. Any origin points (and I'm not sure that this is necessary anyway) could be via (fast) flashbacks. I just found it incredibly dull and had I not been a comics fan would've had turned this off about 30 mins into it. I'd agree with another reviewer on here that an technology armoured man vs. elemental ghosts does not work well. Come to think of it, it was a similar problem for the live action Elektra which really should've stuck to being a martial arts / action film. But I digress...
When I saw the Ultimate Avengers I was optimistic about these direct to DVD efforts from both Marvel and DC. Then Ultimate Avengers 2 came out which was no where near as good, then Superman: Doomsday (see my review on Amazon for my thoughts on that one) and now this. Optimism has all but faded!
Hey Marvel and DC - wanna know a secret? There's a REASON these comic stories are popular - so stop messing with them!!! How hard can it be? Now go talk to Frank Miller about overseeing an animated `Dark Knight returns'!!!
a poor quality cash-in.......2007-10-18
I bought this dvd with high hopes for a nice preview of some iron man action, but was sorely disappointed. The animation is shockingly poorly detailed and flickers like a slideshow. The story even appears to not be consistent with the original iron man storyline. It is obvious that this dvd is a cheap marvel cash-in on the impending live action film, and i urge you not to waste your money on it.
A throwaway film (summary is last 2 paragrahs if you want to skip to it).......2007-10-11
Unfortunately I found this disappointing and just weird. Obviously a film with a man who wears a robotic suit is not going to be grounded in the real world but this was just...weird. Iron Man fighting mystical ghosts that have risen after a 3000 year sleep? It just doesn't work, the film overall films rushed - obviously it's been made to build anticipation towards the blockbuster live action version but they spent too little time getting the story right to cash in on the hype.
Those of you who have seen the live action trailer, will notice that the suit he uses to escape imprisonment, (big, ugly and bulky) is very similar to the one that features in the trailer for the animation version. Very clever marketing on their part! Because along with the matching "Iron Man" title font and design - I thought this was going to be the thing to keep me occupied until the live-action version! I'm upset with myself for getting caught up in the hype!
The action scenes are beautifully animated and the sound is faultless but for the 1st 1/2hr nothing interesting really happens - just the odd threat of a full scale battle...I was most impressed with the fight in the volcano, although I knew our hero would come out alive - I still held my breath at points where his life was in danger.
To sum up it's worth a watch - just the once in my opinion, as it's not as good as many other titles out there. It's a slow starter and by the time it starts the film makers have to dispose of 2 of the bad guys in quick succession. The final battle ends in a cliché while the music and side story remind me of Batman Begins: The haunting music which crops up every now and again and the business/boardroom politics that threaten every playboy millionaire that lends their surname to the company. Make money fast through weapons trade and development or boost earnings through moral , honest avenues?
Please bare in mind - I'm 24yrs old and I'm a keen follower of the DC/Marvel comics world. So if you're buying it for your kids - they probably won't be as judgemental!

Rocky in the NFL.......2007-10-05
In 1975 the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team was on a 14-year losing streak. They had no heart and they had disappointed a city that needed them. Then a down-on-his-luck 30 year old out of work substitute teacher in Philadelphia, played by Mark Wahlberg, is abandoned by his wife, and biding time as a part-time bartender when he answered an open call for tryouts on the Philadelphia Eagles NFL football team in 1976.
This open call was an act of desperation by a new coach and is what this film is about. This inspirational true story is that of Vince Papale who gave his heart and soul to the team and brought them back to life. He will never be forgotten in Philly, he may not be in the record books, but every Eagles football fan knows him. Vince Papale was making all this happen at the same time the fictional movie "Rocky" was released...so the fans of the Eagles saw that dreams do come true. A lesson we should all remember. I recommend this film for the whole family.
INVINCIBLE.......2007-07-14
The story of this guy is damn right amazing. One of the most inspiring stories I've seen in my life time. Stacked against every odd there is, Vince Papale stepped up and faced them all and beat every single one of them.
A real life Rocky and he is wearing shirt Num 83 for the Philladelphia Eagles. This guy had balls, guts and determination. To go from watching your local professional team each week in the stands to becoming the team captain and playing in the NFL takes some miracle and he was that miracle. A must for any sports fan!!!
Also watch the extra footage on the dvd to hear from the director and Vince himself. Very inspiring!!!
Invincible Vince.......2007-01-28
It's 1974, and the men in Vince Papale (Mark Wahlberg)'s neighborhood are having a tough time. They're either laid off like him or on strike. They do still have each other, though. They love their backlot football games, meeting at the tavern, and cheering for the Philadelphia Eagles, who have also had a lot of bad luck. A new coach (Greg Kinnear) comes to the Eagles and holds an open try-out. Anyone can come down and try for a place on the team. His pals urge 30-year old Vince to go, and the rest, as they say, is history.
I'm not much of a football fan, but I did like this movie. It's a Disney movie so there's nothing off-color, and it's all about trying your best, sticking together, and having a good heart. The cast is excellent and the script really held my interest. There is a lot of hard-hitting (American) football action that should please fans. I liked that we got to know and care about Vince and his friends and their gritty neighbourhood seemed real. A very muddy football game filmed in slow-motion is especially good. Not only is this a good story, it's a true story, with a winning combination of action and emotion.
s'ok.......2007-01-20
A typical feel-good Hollywood movie that's been done before so many times. Amazingly, that doesn't take much away from this production as it achieves its task of providing entertainment. It's a good stay at home movie for a relaxing night at home.
Mark Wahlberg plays Vince Papale who has recently lost his wife because 'he'll never go anywhere in life' as well as his job. During a time when life is hard among his friends and family the one thing that brings them all joy is watching their beloved Phili Eagles football team play. When the new coach starts open tryouts Vince is talked into going only to be picked for further training.
Thus begins the journey of a lifetime for Vince Papale. Incase you're rolling your eyes thinking 'same old story' take heart in the fact that this one is actually TRUE!!
