4 out of 5 stars Alpha Dog - Beta Suspense.......2008-03-05

I wanted to see this film because of the reviews I had read elsewhere. Not being fully aware of the details I came in with a fresh perspective. The story opens in a documentary style with a straight to camera piece from Bruce Willis. The real story then begins. Tracking the escalating violence and dislike between two rival slacker drug dealers. This is fairly standard fare for the genre. What follows an abduction though is fairly unstandard. Trying to avoid plot spoilers limits what I can say about what follows, but it is well concived, acted and portrayed, with a realism usually missing from its contemporaries. Only the swimming pool scene fails to convince. Based on the true story of Jesse James Hollywood what the movie shows is how a petty dispute over a trivial amount of money can descend into a truely shocking story of peer pressure, immorality and eventually tragedy.
Nick Cassavettes directs with an eye to the details of the lifestyle and morals of his characters and an acceptance that his audience know the story. This is the one letdown in the movie. He is never absolutely convinced as to whether he is directing a drama or a documentary. Superb all round performences from a mostly young cast, including an eye catching, and surprisingly good, Justin Timberlake. Acting kudos also to Emile Hirsch, Ben Foster and Anton Yelch as the unwitting but somehow compliant young innocent.
All in all a good watch only marred by some indecisive directing.

4 out of 5 stars Very good movie.......2008-02-26

A really good film....unlike most ppl i did not know the ending of the movie so i didnt know what to expect but i must say its deliverence was very powerful. The movie is well edited and i think i helps capture the essense of such a deep storyline. Some acting points could have been better but Ben Foster, Sharon Stone and Bruce Willis were amazing... its worth watching...

3 out of 5 stars No goodfellas.......2008-01-10

I know it's not meant to be....Definitely no classic.
Worth a watch but I couldn't take Justin Timberlake serious...they did not need to cast him to play this part, surely get someone not so well known...maybe would have been a bit more believable.

Ok though, not really worthy of the hype.

1 out of 5 stars Absolute rubbish.......2007-12-09

Judging by other reviews the end may be good, but it couldn't come soon enough for us. After 40 minutes of gratuitous bad language and lack of any point, we gave up on this tripe.

1 out of 5 stars Seriously one of the worst films I've ever seen.......2007-12-06

I can't believe the previous reviews of this film......maybe I saw another version.

This film is terrible, over-the-top acting all round, completely unbelievable storyline although I understand it's 'based' on a true story.

The dialogue is as bad as I've ever heard, if you took the word b*tch & dog out of the script the film would be about 40 minutes long.

The one saving grace is the closing scene with Sharon Stone in a fat suit looking like the woman in Total Recall (Arnie in disguise) and the wig that Bruce Willis wears throughout.....had me crying with laughter.

Why Bruce Willis & Sharon Stone would have signed up to this dross is beyond me, they can't need the money that badly surely???!!!!

I would give this no stars if I could.

4 out of 5 stars Alpha Dog.......2007-12-05

I thought the film was a little slow to start and just couldn't see where it was going - until about half way through. That's when the movie really began to liven up. It was not only entertaining but really interesting, and I found myself pleading with the characters to do the right thing. I guess that's just how a film can get you involved. To make it worse, I realised it was a true story! Some good acting, Justin Timberlake doesn't just use his fame and stature (as some pop stars try their hand at being 'actors' but can't act to save their life), he was actually pretty convincing and did a good job. If you don't like a fairly grimey movie this isn't for you, but I would certainly recommend it and say it's worth watching.

3 out of 5 stars A Constantly Enjoyable If Disjointed Movie.......2007-04-13

2007's "Alpha Dog" has received mixed reviews since it debuted in the US and that's not surprising considering what's on offer. Sure, "Alpha Dog" isn't an awful film by any stretch but it sure isn't as good as it probably could have been. That being said, of the movies that I've seen lately it's one of the better bunch. Directed well by Nick Cassavetes (who's also the credited writer) and starring Emile Hirsch, Anton Yelchin and Justin Timberlake "Alpha Dog" is probably a movie worth seeing, if not for any great spectacle.

"Alpha Dog" is based on the true story of drug dealer Jesse James Hollywood, who became one of the youngest people to have appeared on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List. The movie itself tells the story of a drug dealer named Johnny Truelove (Emile Hirsch) who, owed money by someone, orchestrates the kidnapping of teenager Zack Mazursky (Anton Yelchin). Subsequently the movie focuses on the ordeal Zack faces, the decisions regarding Zack's life that Johnny makes and also follows a man named Frankie Ballenbacher (Justin Timberlake), the man making sure the captive doesn't escape.

As Johnny Truelove, Emile Hirsch could have done with a bit more utilization as the supposed main character. Hirsch, brilliant in 2004's "Girl Next Door", drifts in and out of the story and while he does give the standout performance of the film isn't in it enough to make his story as interesting or relevant as it should be. Justin Timberlake isn't excellent as the troubled Frankie, a man struggling to decide what choices to make regarding the teenage captive he's guarding, and suffers from being on-screen too much. When he's constantly at the front of everything, it's not difficult to miss the mistakes he makes with regards to the acting. In the more serious scenes he's a little comical. As the kidnapped fifteen-year-old Anton Yelchin surpasses Timberlake's performance with ease. Finally away from his posessive mother, Zack's in no rush to escape and embraces the situation he finds himself in. Yelchin is easily one of the best actors in the film. Shawn Hatosy and Chris Marquette also do good jobs with their respective roles.

"Alpha Dog" isn't a film without its problems though. For all the good acting performances there are one or two mediocre, indifferent displays. The storytelling is also a little awkward, with the film shifting its focus too little meaning that some elements of the collective story become uninteresting or unfulfilled (like that of Johnny Truelove). Had the storytelling been handled better by director Nick Cassavetes, who otherwise does a good job, then "Alpha Dog" could have ended up being a better film.

Overall, not that much actually happens in the one-hundred plus running-time. Everything barring the Johnny Truelove parts are done too slow, and the aforementioned Truelove parts over with too rapidly. Sure, watching Zack's journey through the film is one of the highlights but we could have done without the amount of attention payed to Timberlake's character, the viewer gets beaten about the head long after we've already gotten the character's point and dilemmas. And the way in which the ending is handled is another questionable point. It focuses again insufficiently on Truelove and closes too rapidly once more. Had the film's closure been a little longer, or had it been cutoff altogether, the film would have benefited either way.

"Alpha Dog" is a reasonable enough viewing experience but isn't particularly brilliant in anything it does. It's good, but that's about it. You could probably watch it comfortably.
