Civil War Soap!.......2006-11-13
Like Dynasty in crinolines, this wonderful drama develops at the perfect pace to involve the viewers in the lives of the characters long before the horrors of the civil war in the US begin. Two friends from military academy are on opposite sides once war breaks out - but in the beginning there is a believable friendship which results in family members meeting and marrying to form strong bonds. Foes from the academy reappear in war time and scheming southern belle Ashton can give Scarlett O'Hara a run for her money. Too many famous faces to mention but Kirsty Alley shines as abolishinist Virgillia - obsessed to the point of blindness by her belief in "the cause".
This is a fantastic drama of the type that used to grace our TV screens years ago. Well acted, good scripts and tremendous detail to battle re-enactment - which sensibly does not rely on gore for effect but rather maintains the dilemma of former friends and neighbours now at war with each other - this DVD deserves a place in every home collection.
Epic drama.......2006-02-07
Everything about this mini series screems quality, from the memorable music score, the amazing costumes, the great cast, and the fabulously captivating story of war, frienship, principles, love, history and politics. Everything you could ever want in a drama! And Patrick Swayzee at his best! The characters will engross you, the plot lines are detailed and provoking. I have never seen a better piece of television, or film for that matter!
A wonderful, atmospheric production.......2005-10-06
Set against a backdrop of the American Civil War, this epic is spellbinding from the very outset. From the gorgeous theme tune to the lavish southern states landscapes (I love the long drive leading up to Orry Main's plantation mansion, up which he rides several times), this is still a superb production. It is packed full of emotional ups and downs and exciting battle scenes, plus great intrigue, although conveniently both main characters seem to have been involved in every important event of the American Civil War !
Known as the series which launched Patrick Swayze, it also has great performances from Kirstie Alley as George Hazzard's firebrand sister Virgilia; Terri Garber as the superb, deliciously evil sister of Swayze, Ashton; Genie Francis as the beautiful "other sister" and Philip Casnoff as the bullying, manipulative, vengeful Elkanah Bent (complete with magnificent southern accent!).
Nobody will be disappointed with this. It is a great winter's afternoon watch !
Fond memories.......2005-02-03
When North and South first aired I was still at school and was the only one that fancied Patrick Swayze (of course no-one knew who he was or how you pronounced his surname). No, all my friends fancied James Read. Like me you probably only watched North and South because your Nan or mum wanted to. After watching it on TV and taping it every time its come round again since, this is an absolute pleasure. A crackle and fuzz free version of the lavish production about the American Civil War, told through the friendship of 2 wealthy young men. One from the industrial north, the other from an aristocratic southern family, their friendship epitomises the sadness and tragedy to come. The production differs in a number of ways from John Jakes epic novel but is far more entertaining and well paced. This has just the right mix of drama, action, history and romance to keep both sexes interested throughout and begging for the next instalment (order book 2 now!!)
civil war epic........2005-01-22
An epic production set in mid 1800's America. The story is about two families, the Mains and the Hazards. Orry Main and George Hazard become lifelong friends after meeting at Westpoint military academy. The only problem is, Orry is from a wealthy southern family that own a plantation and numerous slaves whilst George is from a rich northern family to whom slavery is an abhorrence. Over the years friendships and relationships build between the families but war is brewing between the North and South. Where will this leave the friends when they have to fight on opposite sides of a bloody and protracted war.
This 'made for TV' production is as entertaining now as it was when it first aired in the 80's. Although there are no extra's on the DVD (apart from subtitles), the story itself makes it a worthwhile purchace. Highly recommended.
