Martin Scorcese handles directing duties in this 1986 sequel to the classic 1961 film The Hustler, which marks the return of Paul Newman to the role of pool shark Fast Eddie Felson. Anxious to break into the big time again, Eddie finds a talented protégé (Tom Cruise) to groom; but with the addition of the latter's manipulative girlfriend (Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) and the wild streak in Cruise's character, the trio make for a fascinating portrait in group psychology. The cast is brilliant, the script by Richard Price (Clockers) is a paragon of tightly controlled character study and drama (at least in the film's first half), and Scorcese and cinematographer Michael Ballhaus make an ornate show of the collision and flight of pool balls through space--something of a metaphor for the dynamics among the three principals. The film is generally regarded as weaker in its second half, and rightly so, as everything that was interesting in the first place disappears. Still, Newman won a deserved Oscar for his performance. --Tom Keogh

Minor Scorsese masterpiece.......2008-02-03
Yet another minor masterpiece from wunderkind Scorsese, however this movie is somewhat dated. The music is without a doubt 1980s. Who could forget Tom Cruise running the table while "doing the Wearwolves of London." Not an image that leaves my head with any immediacy. The director (have I mentioned its Martin Scorsese yet?) seems to be quite inventive with many different types of camera shots on the pool table... but its almost too much. It seems he pulls all of his tricks and it turns into a dog and pony show.
The Hustler was a little more down to earth. It was more of a drama about alcoholism and self-destruction; where as The Color of Money is more of a fun pool-action and redemption of character film (more akin to Rounders than The Hustler). It still has the layers of drama; they just strike a different chord. Regardless this is still a fine little piece of film making and establishes Tom Cruise as a young talent as well as reestablishing Paul Newman as one of the all time greats.
Sequel to the Hustler 25 Years on.......2007-09-30
The more of his movies I see, the more I think that Paul Newman may be the best actor of modern times. Here he is Fast Eddie Felson, a well-off liquor salesman, a former pool hustler, was one of the best. As he explained to young Vincent (Tom Cruise, 23), "Money won is twice as sweet as money earned", and that is what this movie is about. Although by his own admission he "has quit", Eddie misses the action and sees an opportunity to get back in by teaching the hustling game to brash, fiery, and talented Vincent, when he witnesses Vincent demoralizing one of the hustlers by beating him so easily. But Vince is a tough case, he is so competitive that he can't lose for the sake of suckering in a mark. By Eddie's accounting, if you lose a few hundred then you might win a few thousand when other hustlers think you are an easy mark. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is Carmen, Vincent's girlfriend. Helen Shaver is Janelle, Eddie's girlfriend. Good movie, especially for Newman and Cruise.
A Pool Players Classic.......2007-03-30
Following on from "The Hustler" 1961, Paul Newman re-creates his role as "Fast" Eddie Felson, who now appears to be a successful Liquor salesmen after being forced to give up active playing in the first movie. He know is found hanging around Pool Halls staking talented players rather than playing, by all accounts comfortable in terms of earnings and career.
Tom Cruise, playing shark Vincent Lauria, is scouted by Newman and they hit the road as he re-discovers his lost love of both Pool and hustling, gambling their way around the state towards the big tournament at Atlantic City. Felson sees himself in Cruises character, and teaches him the ropes on being a pool pro. One of the criticisms of this movie is that when asked about his pool playing days (I.e. The Hustler) Eddie replies "Actually I was retired. Sometimes you get involved with the wrong people. Way back West, it's dead and buried, I don't even think about it anymore", and that's just about the only link to it! One of the characters in the first movie makes an appearance however.
Creating Lauria into the best player, gives Eddie the platform to test himself against his best game, that is the message of the movie in my opinion. Felson creates his biggest adversary, and the movie explores that perhaps in life the biggest obstacles are ones that we create ourselves.
On a simple level it is good to see Tom Cruise, & Paul Newman in earlier roles.
Interesting sports drama.......2006-08-06
Infamous director Martin Scoursese uses his brilliant talents to great effect once again in this appealing sports drama.
Though not as influential as some of his pictures such as Goodfellas and Raging Bull this Oscar winning drama creates as much passion and tension with an engaging plot and great acting.
The story focuses upon Felson as he sees the arrogant Vince showing off his snooker talents. Having been away from the game for such a long time, Felson is eager to take Vince round to show him the true meaning of the sport.
It is a very basic plot and may discourage the viewing audience. The basic elements of the `tricks of the trade' will be captivating for snooker fans as they learn about hustling, the pay offs and the demands of the tactical sport. Tension runs riot when the overeager Vince has to deal with the huge changes in his life. The film worked well because there were many passionate scenes and the audience could feel what the characters were experiencing.
Being so basic it isn't the most exciting of storylines. A lot of scenes may seem slow when too much dialogue is flowing around.
However we are able to see the passion of the sport and appreciate the ideologies of the snookering world.
The camera movements and shots are fantastic and shows Scorsese's talents to full effect. The slow movements in front of the snooker balls are great and represent the technicality of the sport.
Paul Newman was outstanding and thoroughly deserved his Oscar for best actor in a leading role. His dialogue and movements are worth consideration as he delved deep within the spirit of the demanding and self-conscious Felson.
Cruise to was accepatable as the arrogant snooker player. However he was completely outshined by his teacher and at times appeared uncomfortable.
Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio was very influential as his girlfriend who had to deal with many personal issues.
Great performance from Newman and Scoursese and is worth seeing
