Only in English!.......2007-12-27
I bought this film hoping to get a choice of whether to watch it in the original language (French) with subtitles, or in English. In the description of the product it states - Language: French German
This was not the case. The only version on the DVD was the English dubbed version. Disappointed! Hopefully Amazon will update the information so other customers won't be misled.
Great film destroyed by dubbing.......2007-05-29
I saw this first in French with English subtitles which I'd give at least four stars to. While you lose the wit of the English book translations this way, at least you can appreciate the film and the performances. Shame the only version available seems to be the grotesquely dubbed version.
Great and very funny.......2006-09-03
I really enjoyed this film.
It's very different from the rest of the ones I have seen, and I was suprised to see that this film had real actors instead of being animated like they usually are. Filled with classic 'Asterix and Obelix' fight scenes, as in: punches Roman and he flies into the air and lands several metres away. And there's the magic potion that makes all this possible.
But what really gets me are the names of all the characters. EG, the village bard is called Cacophonix, the chief is called Vitalstatistix, and the village elder is called Geriatrix, and there is a Roman centurian called Christmasbonus.
The flaws are pretty obvious though. The special effects don't look very convincing, and poor dubbing makes this film look weirder that it is already meant to be. Also, the only special feature on the disk is the trailer.
Still, a very good film, I recommend it.
It's a kid's movie but pretty good!.......2002-09-09
Just sit back and enjoy. Of course this movie isn't a real meat and potatoes kind of film but it has a lot of fun action. I don't know why a 4-year old wouldn't have liked it because it's a good treatment of a comic book character. Asterix helped me learn French and the movie is true to his character in every way! Bravo!
Don't even think about it.......2001-11-07
This isn't a movie. It's a convention of French has-beens. It's choppy, the dialogue -- even in French -- is grotesque, and the story is indecisive. My French 4-year-old told me to turn it off because "I don't like this movie." If my son hates it, yours will too.
