I have not read the book on which this film is based so can not comment on how accurately the story has been told to the original, so please take this review on face value.

The story is set in the early opium trading days between England and china, set around the central character Dirk Struan the owner of a wealthy trading and shipping company played by Brian Brown, being at the top can only lead to rivals wanting to see his demise. The story is filled with action, conspiracy, murder, and some sex too!

The film is a visual feast and shot well, most of the acting is good, all in all well worth a view.

        This is an appallingly awful B movie -laughable caricature accents of the most clunky dialogue, wooden acting, one dimensional cartoon characters, gaudy sets offering absolutely no sense of place, poorly explained, disjointed storylines - a real stinker for 2hours 7 minutes. The whole production reeks of "bad joss" (bad luck/karma in the local parlance). It must have been obvious to everyone involved, by final edit (if not well before), that this was a complete turkey. It is certainly "bad joss" for the audience!

        Set in the turbulent days of the founding of Hong Kong in the 1840s, Tai Pan is the story of Dirk Struan (played by Brian Brown), the ruler of one of the most powerful trading company in the Far East. He is also a pirate, an opium smuggler, a master manipulator of men, a ruthless intriguer and a mighty lover. This excellent film based on the novel by James Cavell is packed with action, blood, sin, treachery, conspiracy, sex and murder. If you have any interest in the Far East this is a good film to watch. It is close to the book, and Cavell was extremely interested in Asia, its people and culture.
